Why this matters

The seamless gutter machine is the highest-capital single tool a gutter contractor buys, and the machine choice determines coil sourcing, run speed, profile flexibility, and resale value 10 years out. The three machines that dominate North American residential seamless work are the Englert Series 2000, the New Tech Machinery MACH II SS, and the Amerimax K8. They differ on dimensions cut, coil compatibility, drive system, and parts availability. A senior installer who learned on an Englert and switches crews to a MACH II without studying the loading sequence will scratch coil on the first run. This article maps the real differences so a shop owner can pick or run two machines with the right operator on each.

Englert Series 2000 - the longest-running residential platform, produces 5-inch and 6-inch K-style with quick-change inserts. Drive system uses 11 roller stations with crowned center rollers. Powered by a 1/2 HP electric motor with a foot-pedal forward/reverse switch. Manual cut blade hand-operated at the discharge end. Approximately 700 pounds of road weight on a trailer.

New Tech Machinery MACH II SS - newer-generation machine, produces 5-inch and 6-inch K-style and 6-inch half-round with quick-change drive heads, all-stainless drive rollers, and a hydraulic chop. Slightly higher coil tolerance allows running both .027 and .032 aluminum, plus copper and steel. Powered by 1 HP electric motor. Approximately 750 pounds.

Amerimax K8 - dimensions to 6-inch K-style, marketed primarily to the rental and lower-volume contractor segment. Drive system uses 8 roller stations (fewer than the other two). Manual blade. Approximately 600 pounds. Lower price point; fewer profile options.

Drive-roller differences and coil compatibility

The Englert 11-station drive system is forgiving: the coil passes through 11 progressive shape stations, so minor coil thickness variation works through cleanly. The Englert reliably runs Englert-branded coil; cheaper third-party coil can chatter or skip at the drive head.

The MACH II uses a fewer-station drive but with all-stainless rollers and a wider tolerance gap. This makes MACH II the only one of the three that comfortably runs copper (which is softer and more prone to dragging in chrome rollers) and 24-gauge steel.

The Amerimax K8 has the narrowest tolerance: feed the wrong coil and the machine jams. Pair with Amerimax coil for reliable runs.

Cut systems - manual vs hydraulic

Manual cut (Englert, Amerimax): operator hand-pulls a lever to drop the cutoff blade at the measured length. Fast, simple, but requires the operator to read the tape and trigger; an operator distracted by site noise will cut long or short.

Hydraulic cut (MACH II): the cut fires from a pedal trigger at the machine's measurement-stop arm. The operator sets the stop, presses the pedal, and the cut fires. Lower fatigue on a 200-piece day. The hydraulic system adds parts complexity and a pump that needs annual service.

For a 5-truck operation running 10 to 15 jobs a week, hydraulic justifies its premium on throughput alone. For a 1-truck owner-operator, manual is fine.

Coil sourcing implications

Englert coil: available through Englert distributors. Tightly QC'd; minimum gauge variation across the spool. Higher price per linear foot than commodity coil. Color deck is the Englert standard plus a custom-match program.

Spectra Metals coil: runs cleanly through Englert and MACH II machines. Wide color deck. Most commonly available at building-products supply houses.

Amerimax coil: runs in all three machines but is the only coil officially supported in the K8. Color deck overlaps Spectra by approximately 80 percent.

Quality Edge coil and Berger coil: both run in Englert and MACH II; Berger is the dominant copper-and-zinc supplier in the US.

Loading sequence differences

Englert: machine sits on its trailer with the spool mounted on a side-mount uncoiler. Operator threads the leading edge through the first roller, drops the side rail clamps, and crawls into the cab. From spool to first foot of finished gutter takes about 90 seconds with practice.

MACH II: similar side-mount uncoiler. Threading is into a wider intake; the operator can load while reaching from the driver's side without crawling into the trailer. Slightly faster setup.

Amerimax K8: rear-mount or top-mount uncoiler depending on configuration. Operator threads the coil over the top of the trailer. Slightly slower setup; lower trailer cost.

Maintenance schedule

All three machines require:

  • Daily: visual inspection of every drive roller for nicks, coil residue, paint transfer. Wipe rollers with a soft cloth and isopropyl alcohol.
  • Weekly: lubricate the cut-blade pivot point and the drive-chain (Englert only). 30W chain oil; do not use grease.
  • Monthly: torque all drive-roller bearing bolts to spec (varies, see operator's manual; typical 25 to 35 ft-lb).
  • Annually: replace the cut blade, inspect drive-chain wear, hydraulic fluid change on MACH II.
  • Per spool: clean the intake for paint residue; bad paint can score the rollers.

Parts availability: Englert holds the longest parts pipeline (machines from the 1990s still get parts). MACH II is the next best supported. Amerimax K8 parts are slower to source on older units.

Resale value at 10 years

A well-maintained Englert Series 2000 from 2015 typically sells today for 55 to 70 percent of new price. MACH II of the same vintage holds 60 to 75 percent. Amerimax K8 of the same age holds 35 to 50 percent. The price-of-entry savings on the Amerimax is partially offset by lower resale.
