Downspout + Drainage Systems Reference

Overview

Gutters collect water; downspouts + drainage move it where it belongs (away from the foundation). Most gutter complaints - basement leaks, eroded landscape, foundation cracks - trace to inadequate downspout drainage. This reference covers the system.

Discharge principles

Water must be moved AWAY from the foundation. Specifically:

  • Minimum 6 ft from foundation wall
  • 10 ft is better
  • Discharge to a drainage point that absorbs OR carries water away
  • NOT into a window well, planter, or low spot near foundation

Ground slope:

  • Foundation should slope away at 6 inches per 10 ft (positive grade)
  • Reverse grade (sloping toward house) = water at foundation regardless of downspouts
  • Sometimes regrading is more important than downspout extensions

Discharge options

Option 1: Splash block / pad

  • Concrete or plastic block at downspout outlet
  • Disperses water in spread pattern

  • Effective: only if customer doesn't move them with mowing

Option 2: Downspout extension

  • Plastic or aluminum tube extends downspout 4-10 ft

  • Effective: discharge directed away from foundation

Option 3: Roll-out / flexible extension

  • Vinyl or fabric tube that "rolls out" when water flows; retracts when dry

  • Best for: areas with foot traffic (won't be mowed over)
  • Effective: hands-free, automatic
  • Drawback: clog-prone in heavy debris areas

Option 4: Underground drain tile

  • Buried PVC pipe (3-4 inch) carrying water to a discharge point

  • Effective: most reliable solution
  • Critical: positive slope (1/4" per foot) to discharge point

Option 5: French drain (gravel + perforated pipe)

  • Trench filled with gravel + perforated pipe
  • Collects + disperses water along the run

  • Best for: areas with poor drainage soil, broad water management
  • Effective: works for surface + subsurface water

Option 6: Dry well / soakaway

  • Underground pit filled with gravel; water seeps into surrounding soil

  • Best for: well-draining soil, properties without slope away
  • Critical: sized correctly for roof area + soil percolation rate

Option 7: Rain barrel / cistern

  • Captures water for landscape irrigation
  • depending on size + features
  • Best for: drought-prone areas, environmentally-conscious customers
  • Capacity typically 55-300 gallons (overflow goes to standard discharge)

Option 8: Connect to municipal storm sewer

  • Underground pipe to storm drain or curb
  • Permit required in many jurisdictions -+ installed
  • Critical: NEVER connect to sanitary sewer (illegal, expensive fines)

Underground drain tile installation

Materials:

  • 3-4 inch PVC pipe (solid for transport, perforated for discharge)
  • 90° elbows + 45° elbows
  • Couplings
  • Catch basin (optional, at downspout connection)
  • Pop-up emitter at discharge end

Procedure:

  1. Plan path from downspout to discharge point - straight line OR gentle curve preferred
  2. Trench: 18-24" deep minimum (below frost line in cold climates)
  3. Slope: 1/4" per foot minimum toward discharge
  4. Lay pipe: solid PVC, glued joints
  5. Tee into existing downspout with adapter
  6. Discharge end: pop-up emitter OR daylight (above grade) OR dry well
  7. Backfill: gravel around pipe, then soil
  8. Test: water flow + verify discharge away from foundation

Discharge point options

Daylight discharge:

  • Pipe ends at grade in low spot
  • Water flows out + away
  • Best for: lots with natural slope

Pop-up emitter:

  • Spring-loaded emitter rises during flow, retracts when dry
  • Discreet (only visible during use)
  • Best for: lawns

Dry well:

  • Underground chamber filled with gravel
  • Water percolates into soil
  • Best for: flat lots, well-draining soil

Catch basin at downspout:

  • Inlet at downspout outlet
  • Sediment settles here (cleanable)
  • Pipe carries clear water away
  • Best for: high-debris areas

Discharge volume calculations

Roof area × 0.6 gph per sq ft (typical rain) = gallons during a 1-hour storm

Example: 1,000 sq ft roof × 0.6 = 600 gph

For heavy rain (1+ inch/hour): 1,000 sq ft × 1 in/hr × 0.62 gal/cu ft = 620 gph

Drainage system must handle peak flow without backup.

Soil percolation matters

Dry wells + French drains depend on soil:

Hardpan / rock Very slow Not recommended

For clay soil: drain TO daylight or storm sewer, NOT a dry well.

Maintenance

Drainage systems need:

  • Annual flush: water through to verify open
  • Catch basin cleanout: sediment removal annually
  • Surface inspection: pipe damage, settlement, root intrusion
  • Discharge inspection: blockage, settlement at discharge point

Drainage failure: water backs up to gutter, overflows = same problem as no drainage.

Common drainage mistakes

  • No slope: water doesn't flow; stagnant
  • Reverse slope: water flows back toward house
  • Discharge into window well or planter: water at foundation
  • Connecting to sanitary sewer: ILLEGAL - heavy fines
  • Tree roots clog pipe: not flushable; root removal required
  • Pipe too small: backs up during heavy rain
  • Forgetting freeze depth: pipe freezes + cracks in cold climates

Code + permit considerations

  • Storm sewer connection: typically requires permit + plumber
  • Daylight discharge: usually permit-free
  • Easements: discharge can't cross neighbor's property without permission
  • Wetland protection: discharge regulations near streams, ponds

Always check local code before underground installation.

When customer says "the gutters overflow":

Diagnostic order:

  1. Are gutters clean?
  2. Are gutters sized properly?
  3. Are gutters sloped correctly?
  4. Are downspouts open?
  5. Is discharge effective (away from foundation)?

#5 is often the answer. Customer thinks gutter is "overflowing" because water shows up at foundation; actually the gutter is working fine but discharge is bad.

The single biggest drainage upgrade for an existing home: REPLACE SPLASH BLOCKS WITH UNDERGROUND PIPE TO POP-UP EMITTER (10 ft from house). Cost: for the typical home. Impact: dries up basement leaks, prevents foundation issues, mosquito breeding eliminated. Most customers thank you a year later as their basement stays dry through the worst storms.
