Florida Velocity Zone Gutter Strap and Anchor Specifications

Why this matters

Coastal Florida gutters fail catastrophically in tropical systems when the hanger and anchor schedule is sized for a quiet Midwest install. A 6-inch K-style filled with rain and accelerating in a 130-mph wind generates an uplift load on each hanger that a standard 24-inch-spaced hidden hanger with a 1-1/2-inch deck screw will not hold. Florida Building Code 2023 references ASCE 7-22 for wind-load mapping, and the AHJ inspector on a re-roof permit will pull the gutter detail when the gutter run is part of the scope. Coastal counties (Lee, Collier, Pinellas, Sarasota) increasingly call out gutter attachment specifically in the in-progress inspection. This article gives the hanger schedule and anchor selection that holds up to HVHZ-grade wind loading.

Wind-load math by ASCE 7-22

ASCE 7-22 Section 30.3 computes uplift pressure on building-attached components and cladding at the eave edge as a function of Vult (basic wind speed), exposure category, and effective wind area. For a 1-foot wide K-style gutter at the eave of a Risk Category II residence:

  • Inland panhandle (Vult 130 mph, Exposure B): suction pressure approximately 28 psf
  • Coastal non-HVHZ (Vult 160 mph, Exposure C): approximately 60 psf
  • HVHZ (Vult 180 mph, Exposure C): approximately 80 psf

A 5-foot run of 6-inch K-style at 80 psf experiences approximately 400 pounds of uplift, plus the water weight (a saturated 5-foot section of 6-inch K-style holds roughly 1 gallon per foot, or 5 gallons, or 42 pounds). Total design uplift on a 5-foot section: approximately 440 pounds.

Distribute that across hangers. At 24-inch spacing (2.5 hangers per 5 feet), each hanger sees roughly 176 pounds of uplift. At 16-inch spacing (3.75 hangers per 5 feet), each hanger sees 117 pounds.

Hanger spacing schedule

For Florida HVHZ and coastal non-HVHZ residential:

  • 5-inch K-style: 16-inch on-center hangers
  • 6-inch K-style: 12-inch on-center hangers
  • 7-inch K-style and half-round: 12-inch on-center hangers

For inland Florida (Vult 130 to 140 mph):

  • 5-inch K-style: 24-inch on-center
  • 6-inch K-style: 16-inch on-center
  • 7-inch K-style: 12-inch on-center

These tighten by one step at corners and adjacent to downspouts (drop one hanger spacing to the next-tighter increment within 4 feet of an outlet or corner).

Hanger and anchor selection

The single largest field error is using a 1-1/2-inch zinc-plated deck screw into 1x6 SPF fascia. The 1-1/2-inch screw bottoms out in the fascia with no penetration into the rafter tail behind it, and the SPF fascia pulls through under load. The correct anchor schedule for HVHZ:

  • Hanger: hidden K-style hanger with a screw-thru, NOT a clip-and-screw. Spectra Metals SP-2500, Raytec HH, or equivalent.
  • Screw: stainless steel #10 by 2-1/2-inch minimum, with bonded EPDM washer head. Length must penetrate the rafter tail behind the fascia by 1-1/2 inches minimum.
  • For installations without a rafter tail (subfascia only): the anchor must include a structural backer (added 2x4 sub-fascia ladder framed off the truss tail).

When the existing fascia is rotted, replace it with PVC (Azek) or 5/4 cedar before hanging the gutter. Hanging on rotted fascia voids any hanger warranty and the post-storm failure analysis will pin the cause on the substrate.

Strap hanger option for half-round

Half-round gutters do not accept hidden hangers; they use straps. For Florida coastal:

  • 16-gauge copper or stainless steel strap
  • 12-inch on-center spacing
  • Two #10 by 2-1/2-inch stainless screws per strap, anchored through the deck into a rafter or blocking
  • Strap routed over the gutter back lip and rolled at the bead

The strap-to-deck connection must catch a rafter, not just the deck plywood. A 1/2-inch CDX deck does not hold an anchor against 80 psf uplift on a 12-inch-spaced strap; the screw tear-out is approximately 100 pounds per screw in 1/2-inch CDX, and the load is 117 pounds per strap minimum.

Downspout strap and elbow anchoring

Downspouts in HVHZ get strap spacing tightened to 6 feet maximum, with the top strap within 12 inches of the gutter outlet. Each strap uses two #10 by 2-1/2-inch stainless screws into wall studs or block. Elbow joints get a single 1/4-inch stainless pop rivet on each side in addition to the friction fit.

For tile and stucco walls, the strap anchor uses a 1/4-inch stainless concrete screw (Tapcon HD or equivalent) into structural CMU or concrete, not just stucco. A stucco-only anchor pulls out at low load.

Inspection documentation

For permitted gutter installations in HVHZ:

  • Hanger schedule on the proposal: spacing, screw length and grade, substrate
  • Photographs of every fifth hanger showing the screw embedded in rafter tail
  • Photograph of the downspout strap pattern with measurements
  • Stainless-steel screw box label retained for the AHJ

Some Florida AHJs do not require a separate gutter permit but will look at the gutter detail during the roof in-progress inspection. Field inspectors will reject a 2-inch deck screw in a HVHZ context on visual confirmation alone.

Aluminum K-style hangers using a clip-and-screw design (the legacy "shark fin" type) are not appropriate for Florida coastal installs. The clip releases the gutter under uplift before the screw fails. Use only hidden hangers with a through-screw to the substrate.
