Install Leaf Guards + Gutter Protection
Goal
Install leaf-guard / gutter-protection systems that reduce or eliminate gutter cleaning needs. Multiple technologies exist; matching the right product to the customer's situation is the difference between satisfied + frustrated.
When leaf guards make sense
Recommend for:
- Heavily wooded properties (oak, maple, pine)
- Homes with hard-to-access gutters (2nd story, steep slopes)
- Customers physically unable to clean
- High-value customers requesting peace of mind
Be honest with:
- Customers with minimal tree exposure (cost may not justify)
- Customers with extremely pine-needle-heavy environments (no perfect solution; ongoing maintenance still needed)
- Customers expecting "never clean again" (not realistic for most products)
Leaf-guard categories
Category 1: Mesh screen (cheapest)
- Fine wire or plastic mesh fits over gutter top

- Lifespan: 5-10 years (plastic brittle; wire OK)
- Best for: light leaf load, budget-conscious customers
- Maintenance: still annual cleaning of debris on top
Category 2: Foam inserts
- Foam fills the gutter interior; water flows through, debris stays on top

- Lifespan: 3-5 years (foam degrades from UV + dirt)
- Best for: budget, easy install
- Drawback: foam saturates + can hold water; mosquito issues; tough to clean
Category 3: Reverse-curve / surface tension
- Curved hood directs water in while leaves slide off

- Lifespan: 15-25 years
- Best for: most homes, balanced approach
- Drawbacks: heavy rain can overshoot; debris can lodge in curve

Category 4: Micro-mesh
- Very fine stainless mesh (smaller than pine needles)
- Most premium option; foot
- Lifespan: 25+ years (stainless)
- Best for: customers wanting maximum protection, heavy tree exposure
- Even pine needles + roof grit blocked

Category 5: Brush inserts
- Cylindrical brushes filling gutter

- Drawback: snow + ice can lodge in slot; heavy rain can overshoot
Installation procedure
Step 1: Inspect existing gutter system
- Are gutters cleaned + in good condition?
- Hangers secure?
- Slope correct?
- Downspouts flowing?
Do NOT install leaf guards over a system that's already failing.
Step 2: Measure for product
- Linear feet of gutter
- Product-specific: width compatibility, fastener system, end cap requirements
- Inside + outside corners (often special pieces)
- Around downspouts (cutouts)
Step 3: Install per product type
Mesh screen:
- Slide under shingle edge OR clip onto gutter front rail
- Fasten every 18-24"
- Cut to length at downspouts
Foam:
- Cut to length
- Insert into gutter
Reverse-curve:
- Slide rear edge under shingles (lifting carefully)
- Front rests on gutter front
- Fastened to gutter or roof per manufacturer
- Caulk overlaps + edges
Micro-mesh:
- Aluminum frame slides under shingle (some attach without)
- Mesh stretched + clipped tight
- Fasten frame to gutter per spec
- Replace any damaged shingles after install
Step 4: Cut around downspouts
- Most products have prefabricated drop-outs
- Cut to size
- Seal edges per manufacturer
Step 5: Test
- Spray water from hose onto roof
- Verify water enters gutter (not overshooting)
- Verify leaves do NOT enter (drop leaves on roof; watch what happens)
Step 6: Customer briefing
- Walk customer around exterior
- Explain expected debris (some still accumulates on top)
- Schedule annual top-of-guard cleaning (light dust + small debris)
- Provide manufacturer warranty info
Common pitfalls
- Installing over leaking/damaged gutters: covers don't fix underlying problems
- Lifting shingles improperly: can damage roof, void shingle warranty
- Wrong product for pine needles: only micro-mesh handles fine pine needles
- Customer expectation: "never clean again": even premium products need periodic cleaning of top
- Cheap product on heavy leaf load: needs replacement in 2-3 years; total cost = premium product
- Solid covers in snowy climate: snow/ice issues
- Generic install instructions: manufacturer specs matter; each system slightly different
Warranty notes
Many manufacturer warranties:
- Lifetime guarantee on the product (transferable in some)
- 20-25 year material warranty
- Installation warranty 5-10 years
- Voided if not professionally installed
Some include "we'll clean your gutters" guarantee if leaves accumulate.
When NOT to recommend
- Customer cleans gutters themselves easily + doesn't mind
- 1-2 small trees, minimal leaf load
- Budget doesn't support premium product (better to clean 2x/year)
- Roof needs replacement soon (do the roof first, then guards)
- Major snow/ice climate where solid covers cause problems
Customer service after install
- Annual check-up call: "How are your guards working?"
- Quick visit at 6-12 months: visual check + light cleaning of top
- Photograph + document any issues for warranty
- Notify customer of any visible roof issues during inspection
The single biggest leaf-guard product-match mistake: SELLING REVERSE-CURVE TO PINE-NEEDLE-HEAVY HOMES. Pine needles slide right through the gap; customer is angrier than before because they expected "no more cleaning" + still need to clean. For pine needles or seed pods, micro-mesh is the only product that actually works. Be honest about which product fits.
