Gutter Overflow + Drainage Diagnostic

Overview

Diagnostic tree for gutter overflow + drainage problems. "Gutters overflow during rain" has 5-6 different root causes; chase the actual one before quoting work.

Symptom branching

Symptom 1: Water spilling over gutter front during rain

Sub-symptom 1a: Spills over the entire run

Likely cause: gutters undersized OR downspout undersized

Diagnostic:

• Calculate roof area drained to that gutter
• Compare to gutter size + downspout size
• 5" gutter handles up to ~1,500 sq ft of roof area; beyond that needs upgrade

Fix: install larger gutter OR add downspouts

Sub-symptom 1b: Spills over far end only

Likely cause: gutter slope wrong (water pools at far end before reaching downspout)

Diagnostic:

• String line from downspout to far end
• Should be 1/4" per 10 ft lower at downspout
• Check actual measurement

Fix: re-hang with correct slope, OR add downspout at far end

Sub-symptom 1c: Spills near downspout but not far end

Likely cause: downspout obstruction OR undersized

Diagnostic:

• Test water flow into downspout
• Pour water; should flow freely
• If slow: snake the downspout

Fix: clear blockage; if downspout undersized for roof area, upgrade

Sub-symptom 1d: Spills only at specific spot in run

Likely cause: localized obstruction OR hanger sag at that point

Diagnostic:

• Inspect gutter at the location
• Look for debris dam, sagging from old hanger, joint separation

Fix: clear debris, replace hanger, repair joint

Symptom 2: Gutters clean + sloped but still overflow

Most surprising case for customers.

Likely cause: peak rain intensity exceeds capacity

• Heavy thunderstorms can exceed system capacity even with proper sizing
• Some homes need 6" gutters or extra downspouts for severe rain regions

Diagnostic:

• Check region's peak rain intensity (NOAA)
• Florida + Gulf: 5-9 inches per hour can occur
• Heavy storm overload is normal for undersized systems

Fix: upgrade to larger gutter OR add downspouts (sometimes adding 1-2 more downspouts cheaper than upsizing)

Symptom 3: Water at foundation despite working gutters

Sub-symptom 3a: Downspout discharges at foundation

Likely cause: no extension, splash block washed away

Diagnostic:

• Inspect downspout discharge
• Where does water go?

Fix: extend downspout 6-10 ft from foundation; underground drain tile to discharge point

Sub-symptom 3b: Discharge looks OK but water still at foundation

Likely cause: ground slope toward foundation

Diagnostic:

• Check ground slope from foundation outward
• Should be 6 inches per 10 ft sloping AWAY
• Often grade has settled or been built up by mulch/landscaping

Fix: regrade soil around foundation (separate scope)

Sub-symptom 3c: Basement leak directly below downspout

Likely cause: underground drain tile broken or clogged

Diagnostic:

• If drain tile exists: test flow with water OR scope with camera
• If no drain tile: install one

Fix: repair/clean drain tile, OR install new

Symptom 4: Ice damming + winter overflow

Symptoms in winter: icicles at eaves, water back-flowing under shingles, gutter pulling away from house from ice weight.

Root cause: attic ventilation + insulation issue, not gutter issue

• Warm roof + cold eaves = melt + refreeze cycle
• Water dams behind ice, backs up under shingles
• Gutters fill with ice + can pull from house

Diagnostic + Fix:

• Improve attic insulation (R-49 typical)
• Improve attic ventilation (ridge + soffit)
• Heat cable along eaves as temporary remedy

Don't sell gutter work for ice dams; it's not the gutter.

Symptom 5: Gutter pulling away from house

Causes:

• Fascia rot behind gutter
• Insufficient or failed hangers
• Ice / snow weight pulling
• Tree branch damage
• Old, oversized + heavy galvanized gutter

Fix:

• Inspect fascia from soffit; repair rot
• Replace hangers; add more if needed
• For ice/snow regions: closer hanger spacing (18-24")
• Trim trees if branches contacting

Symptom 6: Gutter overflow in light rain

Surprising: light rain + overflow suggests blockage.

Causes:

• Gutter clogged with debris (most common)
• Downspout clogged
• Splash from roof valley overshooting gutter

Fix:

• Clean
• For valley overshoot: install valley diverter (deflects to gutter)

Symptom 7: Gutter sags between hangers

Cause: hangers too far apart OR hangers failing

Fix: add intermediate hangers; replace any rusted/loose

Symptom 8: Visible water spots / staining on siding under gutter

Causes:

• Gutter overflowing at that spot (per above)
• Gutter pulling from house (water runs behind gutter)
• Drip edge missing (water wicks behind gutter)
• Tree sap dripping from above

Fix: match to root cause

Diagnostic procedure summary

1. Inspect during/after rain if possible - see exact behavior
2. Test with garden hose: pour water in gutter, watch flow
3. Measure: gutter slope, downspout sizes, discharge distance
4. Photograph everything: customer needs to see what you found
5. Quote based on findings, not assumptions

When the answer is "your gutter system is fine"

Some customer concerns aren't actually gutter problems:

• Heavy storm exceeds any reasonable system
• Local heavy clay soil + flat lot = water management challenge regardless
• Foundation/grade issues that aren't gutter-related

Be honest. Customer's gratitude for honest diagnosis builds trust + repeat business.
