Seamless Gutter Machine Profile Selection (5K, 5V, 6K)

Why this matters

The gutter machine on your trailer dictates which jobs you can quote, what coil stock you stage, and what your warranty exposure looks like for the next decade. A 5-inch K-style residential rig handles 80 percent of suburban tract work and zero percent of commercial flat-roof scuppers. A 6-inch box-gutter machine bids work the 5-inch shop will not touch. Picking the wrong machine commits a shop to the wrong job mix.

The three working classes of machine

Residential rolling-formers fall into three sizes that align with the IRC R903 secondary-drainage capacity tables and SMACNA Architectural Sheet Metal Manual Figure 1-2 sizing curves:

  • 5-inch K-style (5K): standard residential, square-front ogee profile. Handles roof areas roughly up to 850 square feet per downspout at 1/16 inch per foot pitch in a 1-hour, 100-year storm region. The default for tract housing.
  • 5-inch half-round (5V or 5HR depending on builder): same capacity bracket as 5K but with the smooth half-round trough preferred on traditional, craftsman, and historic homes. Often paired with copper.
  • 6-inch K-style (6K): larger trough handles up to roughly 1,400 square feet per downspout. Required on steep-pitch roofs, long runs without intermediate downspouts, and most light-commercial low-slope work.

A few shops also run 7-inch commercial machines for industrial roofs; that is a separate purchase and a separate sales motion. Most residential shops should not chase it.

Match the machine to the roof, not the house style

Pitch and tributary area drive trough size, period. A 12/12 cathedral roof dumps water onto a small linear foot of gutter at high velocity; even a 1,200 square foot roof on a steep pitch needs 6-inch trough. A 4/12 ranch can run 5-inch over a 1,400 square foot footprint without overflow.

SMACNA Table 1-2 gives the design rainfall-rate intensities by city; multiply by tributary area in square feet and divide by 96.23 to get gallons per minute at the outlet. Compare against trough capacity at the design pitch (5K at 1/16 inch per foot moves roughly 5,500 gallons per hour; 6K moves roughly 7,960 gallons per hour). If GPM exceeds capacity, go up one trough size or add a downspout.

Coil stock compatibility

Each machine accepts a specific coil width. A 5K rig takes 11.75-inch coil; 6K takes 15-inch; 5V half-round takes 14-inch. Mixing widths is not possible without changing forming rollers, which is a multi-hour shop operation, not a job-site swap.

Stock at least three colors of each width you run; a single coil holds roughly 250 lineal feet of formed gutter. Aluminum coil is sold in 0.027-inch (residential standard), 0.032-inch (premium residential and light commercial), and 0.040-inch (commercial). Match coil thickness to wind exposure and ladder-impact resistance; 0.032 is the right baseline for a quality residential shop in any storm-prone region.

Trailer vs shop-based

Direct-on-site forming is the entire reason seamless exists. The machine lives on the trailer, the truck pulls the trailer to the job, and the gutter is formed to length on the customer's driveway. Shop-formed gutters require a transport rack longer than the longest run, which limits practical length to roughly 30 feet without bowing in transit.

A trailer-mounted machine on a tandem-axle 14-foot trailer with coil rack, brake, and outlet-punch storage is the standard configuration. Single-axle 10-foot trailers are acceptable for small shops running only 5K and short driveways but become a problem at 40-foot run requirements.

Add-ons that change the bid mix

  • Hydraulic coil cradle: required for handling 14-inch and 15-inch coils safely. Manual cradles work for 11.75-inch but become a two-person lift at the wider coils.
  • Power outlet punch: cuts the 2x3 or 3x4 outlet drops in 8 seconds; a hand punch takes 90 seconds and the operator's wrist gives out by job three.
  • Strip-miter brake: lets you form box miters from the same coil rather than ordering pre-formed miters. Cuts material cost and lets you match any color without inventory exposure.
  • Crimping tool for outlet-to-downspout sweat fit: keeps the joint mechanically tight before sealant.

Buy-vs-don't-buy framing

A new K-M Industries or New Tech Machinery 5K trailer-mounted machine MSRPs in the mid-five-figure range and lasts 20 years with seasonal maintenance. A used machine in working condition is a credible entry path; check the drive chain, forming rollers (replace if grooved), and outlet punch dies before committing. Avoid auction-house machines without a forming-roller inspection; replacement roller sets are themselves a five-figure spend.

A shop that bids only suburban tract homes needs one 5K machine. A shop that wants the high-end remodel and historic market needs a 5V half-round machine in addition. A shop chasing light commercial needs a 6K. There is no single machine that does all three well; budget for the mix your sales pipeline actually supports.

Maintenance schedule

  • Daily: clean forming rollers of paint and coil residue with mineral spirits; verify outlet-punch die alignment.
  • Weekly: lubricate drive chain per manufacturer manual; check coil-cradle bearings.
  • Monthly: torque-check all forming-roller mounting bolts; inspect the cut-off shear blade for chipping.
  • Seasonally: pull forming rollers, inspect for wear, swap if score marks exceed 0.005 inch depth.

A machine taken out of service in mid-October because the forming rollers failed during peak gutter season is a five-figure revenue loss for the shop. Preventive maintenance is cheap.
