Bondo vs Water Putty vs Spackle Selection

Why this matters

A handyman with one tub of "wood filler" in the truck has solved 40% of fill jobs and is one bad pick away from a callback on the other 60%. The three families - 3M Bondo Wood Filler / Bondo Body Filler (two-part polyester), Durham's Water Putty (powder + water), and standard latex spackle (DAP DryDex, 3M Patch Plus) - have wildly different mechanical properties, cure mechanisms, sanding behavior, paint acceptance, and outdoor durability. Picking the wrong one means a fill that cracks, sinks, will not hold a screw, will not accept stain, or weeps through the topcoat. This article walks the chemistry, the actual product specs, and the substrate-and-condition decision: small drywall holes, deep wood gouges, rotten exterior trim, gaps in stair treads, anchor-hole repair in framing, and the cases where none of the three is the right answer.

The three families at a glance

3M Bondo: two-part polyester resin and hardener mixed at use. Original Bondo is the automotive body filler (red hardener, gray paste). Bondo Wood Filler (also 3M) is the wood-specific reformulation - tan paste, slightly different resin, same chemistry. Sets in 15 minutes, hard-sandable in 30, holds screws, accepts paint and stain (with limitations). Will not absorb water during cure - bonds to wet or rotten substrates.

Durham's Water Putty (Donald Durham Company, in production since 1933): cement-like powder, water-mixed. Tan when wet, lighter when dry. Sets by water absorption and chemical reaction. Hard, dense, dust-sandable. Holds screws. Accepts paint well; accepts stain poorly. Cheap - a 4 lb container fills hundreds of small holes.

Latex spackle (DAP DryDex, 3M Patch Plus, Red Devil OneTime): water-based, pre-mixed. Soft when wet, soft when dry. Sands easily. Used for drywall and small interior wood patches under paint. Will NOT hold a screw, will NOT accept stain, will NOT survive outdoor moisture.

Bondo: when polyester wins

Rotten exterior trim, sash, or fascia (Category 4 in the wood-rot decision): Bondo Wood Filler or Original Bondo bonded directly to the prepared rotten wood. The polyester does not require dry substrate. After the rot is dug out with a chisel and the cavity is treated with Minwax Wood Hardener (acrylic resin penetrant) and let dry per the can (typically 2-4 hours), Bondo is troweled into the cavity, slightly proud of the surrounding wood. Sands flush in 30 minutes. Primes and paints with full adhesion. The trim repair lasts 15+ years if the underlying water source is fixed.

Deep gouges in interior wood that need to be screw-able: handrail cap, stair tread, cabinet edge that has been damaged. Bondo bonds to wood, holds wood screws after cure, and does not shrink. A 1/2-inch deep gouge filled with Bondo is sandable, paintable, screwable. Spackle fails this test; water putty fails the screw test.

Body work on metal (rare for handyman but it happens - exterior steel door dents, mailbox post repairs): Original Bondo (not the wood SKU). Mixes with a small dollop of red hardener at a 50:1 ratio. 15-minute work time.

What Bondo cannot do: stain. The cured polyester is gray-tan and does not accept stain like wood. Painted finishes only. For stain-grade fills use Famowood Original Wood Filler (water-based, accepts stain) or Minwax Wood Filler.

What Bondo will not do well: thin fills on drywall paper. The chemistry is too hot for paper-faced gypsum, and the cured fill is too hard to sand neatly without taking surrounding paper with it. Use spackle for drywall.

Durham's Water Putty: when the cement-like fill wins

Anchor holes in framing or in a hardwood floor that will be over-screwed at the same location later: water putty mixes thick, sets dense, accepts a screw without spinning. A drywall anchor hole in a stud that needs to take a new screw cleanly: fill with water putty, drill new pilot, drive screw.

Hairline gaps in stained wood trim that will be painted: water putty mixes to a wood-tone slurry, dries close to the surrounding wood color, accepts paint. Better than Bondo for thin gaps because it does not heat the substrate.

Stripped wood screw holes in hinge mortises, drawer slides, cabinet bumpers: water putty packed into the stripped hole and let dry overnight gives a screw-able substrate. The shop-classic alternative is gluing in a wooden dowel or a golf tee; water putty is the lazy version and works for most cases under 1/4-inch hole diameter.

Mix ratio: 3 parts powder to 1 part water by volume. Mix to a stiff peanut-butter consistency. Working time is 15-20 minutes; full cure 24 hours. Mixing thinner extends working time but reduces hardness.

What water putty cannot do: outdoor exposure without paint. The cured material wicks water and washes out if uncoated. Always seal water putty with primer and paint for exterior use. Even then it loses to Bondo on long-term durability outside.

What water putty will not do well: stain. The cured material is a uniform tan and stain runs across it without absorbing like wood. Paint-grade only.

Latex spackle: when soft and easy wins

Drywall nail and screw holes, drywall hairline cracks under 1/16 inch, small impact dings in interior wall paint: DAP DryDex spackle (pink wet, white dry - the color change tells you when to sand). Apply with a putty knife, slightly proud, wait for color change (30-90 minutes depending on humidity), sand flush. Single coat for holes under 1/2 inch wide and 1/16 inch deep; multi-coat for anything deeper.

3M Patch Plus and Red Devil OneTime are the major alternatives. All three perform similarly for the homeowner-grade interior patch.

Small interior wood patches under paint, brad nail holes in interior trim before paint: spackle works because the wood is being painted, not stained, and the patch is shallow. Faster than water putty, cheaper than Bondo.

What spackle cannot do: hold a screw, survive outdoor moisture, fill deep gouges without sinking, accept stain. Anything outside, anything deep, anything that will be loaded mechanically - skip spackle.

What spackle will not do well: deep fills. Spackle shrinks 5-15% on drying depending on depth. A 1/4-inch deep fill with one coat of spackle becomes a 3/16-inch deep fill the next day. Either build up in three coats over three days, or switch to a setting compound (Sheetrock Plus 3 90-minute hot mud) for the first coat.

The decision tree

Drywall paper-faced patch under 1/4 inch deep: latex spackle.

Drywall patch deeper than 1/4 inch: Sheetrock Plus 3 setting compound for the deep coats, spackle or all-purpose joint compound for the finish coat. Not Bondo, not water putty.

Interior wood trim brad-nail holes before paint: latex spackle.
