Bathtub Caulk Cracks Only on the South-Facing Wall Side: Single-Observable Diagnosis
Why this matters
A caulk failure that is limited to one wall of a bathtub surround while the other walls hold is not random - it is the single observable pointing to the cause. Replacing the cracked bead without understanding why that specific side failed first will result in the same failure again within one to two seasons. Three causes share this asymmetric pattern, and each requires a different fix. Misidentifying the cause means a callback.
Why the exterior-adjacent wall fails first
The wall that faces toward the building exterior (or toward a south or west sun exposure) moves more than interior walls. Wood framing expands and contracts with temperature and humidity more aggressively when it is adjacent to an unconditioned space. The bathtub flange on that side widens and narrows with the seasons. A caulk bead that was installed too narrow or with the wrong product stretches beyond its elongation limit and cracks.
The other walls are insulated from outdoor temperature swings and move far less over the same period - so their caulk, applied from the same tube on the same day, holds.
Branch 1: Thermal cycling differential (most common)
The wall moves more than the caulk product can accommodate. This is confirmed if:
- The cracked side faces an exterior wall, a garage, or a crawlspace
- The crack runs the full length of the joint, not just at one corner
- The caulk is a siliconized acrylic (paintable) or plain acrylic latex product - neither accommodates high movement
Correct product for a thermally active joint is 100% silicone, which has elongation capacity of 25-50% of the joint width. Siliconized acrylic tolerates roughly 12-15%. For a 1/4-inch joint, 100% silicone can handle 1/16-inch seasonal movement; acrylic cannot.
Repair: remove all existing caulk to bare substrate, allow to fully dry, apply 100% silicone in a bead sized to the joint. A joint that is narrower than 1/4 inch on a thermally active wall should be widened with a grout saw before recaulking so the bead has sufficient cross-section.
Branch 2: Bathtub flex at the wall corner
Some alcove and freestanding tubs deflect when occupied - the tub floor drops slightly under load, pulling the flange away from the tile on whichever wall is perpendicular to the flex axis. The exterior corner is often the point of maximum flex because framing is less continuous there.
This is confirmed if:
- The crack is localized at the tub-to-wall joint rather than running the full length
- The crack is most pronounced at or near the end of the tub near the corner
- Pressing on the tub floor by hand reveals visible flex in the gap between tub and tile
Repair: the same 100% silicone product is required, but also confirm the tub is properly supported at its underside (mortar bed or foam leveling compound). A tub that flexes significantly on occupancy under a correctly applied silicone bead will eventually re-crack at a reduced rate - this is disclosed to the customer before recaulking.
Branch 3: Old caulk beneath the new bead
If the existing bead was applied over a previous bead rather than removing the old layer, the adhesion to the substrate is the old caulk's adhesion, not the new bead's. The exterior-side joint fails first because it moves the most, peeling at the old-caulk interface. The interior joints hold longer because they move less, but they will fail next.
This is confirmed by peeling back a section of the cracked bead - a second layer of caulk will be visible beneath.
Repair: full removal of all caulk layers to bare substrate on all four sides of the surround, not just the cracked side. Apply fresh 100% silicone as a single bead in direct contact with the tub flange and tile edge.
Correct removal and application
Use a caulk removal tool or oscillating tool with a scraper blade to remove the full bead. Clean the joint with isopropyl alcohol and allow to dry completely - any moisture behind the bead will prevent adhesion. Apply masking tape on both sides of the joint for a clean line. Gun the bead in one continuous pass. Tool within 2-3 minutes with a wetted finger or caulk tool. Remove tape immediately after tooling before the silicone skins.
Do not apply new caulk over existing cracked caulk. The bonding surface is the old material, not the substrate. The repair will re-crack at the same location within one season regardless of product quality.
