Door Wont Latch But Worked Yesterday: Humidity Vs Settle Translation Decision Tree
Why this matters
"It latched fine yesterday, now it won't" is a high-information complaint that most techs throw away. A door that changes behavior within a day or two did not settle. Foundation movement and framing settlement happen over weeks and seasons, not overnight. A sudden change almost always points to wood movement from a humidity swing, a hardware part that shifted or loosened, or something the homeowner did (slammed it, hung weight on it, bumped a hinge). Reading the timeline correctly tells you whether to plane a door (rarely the right move) or just move a strike plate (usually the right move).
The cost of guessing wrong is real. Plane a swollen door in a wet July and you create a permanent gap that whistles all winter. Translate the customer's "settled" into the actual mechanism and you fix it once.
Symptom presentation
Nail down two things before you touch a tool:
- Timeline. Overnight or over a few days = humidity or hardware. Over months or seasons, recurring at the same time each year = humidity cycle. Gradual over years = framing or foundation. Sudden after an event (slam, new weatherstrip, fresh paint) = hardware or buildup.
- Where it fails. Does the latch bolt miss the strike hole entirely (vertical or horizontal misalignment), or does the door bind on the jamb before it ever closes far enough to latch? Missing the strike and binding on the jamb are two different problems.
Have the customer demonstrate. Watch whether the door rubs at the top, the latch side, or the bottom, and whether the latch bolt lands high, low, or short of the strike pocket.
Quick checks
- Close it slowly and watch the latch bolt against the strike. Mark where the bolt tip contacts the strike plate with a pencil or lipstick. High, low, or proud of the hole tells you the direction the door moved.
- Check the hinge screws. Push the door at the knob. Movement or a clunk means loose hinge screws, the single most common overnight failure. A stripped top-hinge screw lets the door sag toward the latch side and drop the bolt below the strike.
- Feel for swelling. Run a hand along the latch edge and the top rail. A damp, swollen feel and a season that just turned humid confirms moisture. Paint that feels tacky or recently applied points to paint buildup.
- Look at the reveal (gap) all around. Even reveal = alignment shifted as a unit. Pinched at top-latch and open at bottom-hinge = the door dropped (hinge or sag). Tight only at one corner = localized swelling.
- Test the season. A magnetic or pin hygrometer reading and the weather story matter. Indoor humidity above the mid-50s percent with a recent jump is a swelling signal.

Did the change happen within a day or two AND the latch bolt now misses the strike by dropping low?
- YES: Suspect a loose or stripped top hinge. Tighten; if the screws spin, drive longer screws into the framing or plug and redrill. This re-lifts the latch side and usually re-aligns the bolt. No planing.
- NO: continue.
Did it change over a day or two with a clear humidity jump, and the latch edge feels swollen / the door binds on the jamb before latching?
- YES: Seasonal swelling. Do NOT plane during the humid season. Address weatherstrip drag, ease only a hair if binding is severe, and revisit in the dry season before any material removal. The customer's "it settled" is mistranslated humidity.
- NO: continue.
Did it follow an event (new paint, new weatherstrip, slam)?
- YES: Mechanical buildup or a shifted part. Check for paint ridges on the jamb stop, an over-thick weatherstrip, a bent strike, or a latch that no longer extends fully. Fix the buildup or the part.
- NO: continue.
Has the reveal stayed even but the strike alignment drifted slightly, recurring every year at the same season?
- YES: Annual humidity cycle with a marginal strike. The permanent fix is to enlarge or file the strike pocket and/or fit an adjustable strike so the bolt catches across the seasonal swing, rather than chasing the door.
- NO: continue.
Has it worsened slowly over years, with cracks in nearby drywall or an out-of-square opening?
- YES: This is genuine framing or foundation movement. A misaligned strike is a symptom, not the cause. Reset hinges and strike to the current geometry, but flag the structural movement; a door is not the place to fix a settling house.
Confirming diagnosis
- Hinge sag confirmed: After tightening or re-screwing the top hinge, the bolt re-centers on the strike. If tightening lifts the latch side and it latches, that was it.
- Humidity confirmed: The bind is on the latch edge or top, the wood feels and measures damp, and the problem maps to a humidity rise. The real test is whether it self-resolves when humidity drops; if it does, do not remove material.
- Hardware confirmed: With the latch mechanism worked by hand, the bolt does not fully extend or retract, or a bent strike physically blocks it. Replacing the part fixes it independent of the door.
Remediation
- Loose/stripped hinge: longer screws into framing, toothpick-and-glue or dowel plug for stripped holes, then redrill.
- Marginal strike alignment: file or relocate the strike, deepen the latch pocket, or fit an adjustable strike. Move the strike before you move the door.
- Seasonal swelling: weatherstrip adjustment now; if material removal is truly needed, do it in the dry season and seal all six edges (including top and bottom) so the door stops absorbing moisture.
- Paint/buildup: scrape ridges on the stop and edges, recoat thin.
- Structural: reset hardware to current geometry and document the movement for the homeowner; recommend evaluation if drywall cracking or out-of-square is progressing.
