Door Rubs Only After New Weatherstrip Decision Tree

Why this matters

A door that swung and latched fine for years and started rubbing the day after a weatherstrip job is almost never a swelling-door or settling-frame problem - the variable you changed is the variable that broke it. The trap is to plane the door or chase the hinges, which masks an over-thick or misplaced seal and leaves the customer with a door that no longer seals or one you've permanently shaved. Diagnosing this means proving whether the new seal added interference, whether you closed up clearance the old seal hid, or whether compressing the door against fresh weatherstrip exposed a pre-existing hinge or jamb condition. Get the order right and most of these are a five-minute seal adjustment, not a refit.

Symptom presentation

  • Door drags or scrapes on the latch stile, the head, or the threshold sweep, only since the new seal went on.
  • Latch no longer engages without a shoulder-push, or the deadbolt binds.
  • A shiny rub mark or compressed paint line appears where the new kerf-in or adhesive seal sits.
  • Door springs back open slightly because the compressed bulb is pushing it.

Quick checks

  1. Look at the rub location and match it to the seal you installed. Head-jamb seal too thick = top rubs. Latch-side kerf seal proud = latch stile drags. New door sweep too low = threshold scrape.
  2. Run a folded dollar bill or a 0.015 in feeler around the perimeter with the door closed. Where it pulls hard, the gap closed up.
  3. Back the seal off temporarily. Peel a section of adhesive seal or pull a length of kerf-in bulb and re-close. If the rub disappears, the seal is the cause - now decide how to fit it, not whether to plane.
  4. Confirm the hinges are still tight. A weatherstrip job sometimes just reveals a loose hinge screw that was borderline before.

Isolation tree

Step 1 - Is the rub at the threshold/sweep, or at a jamb edge? Threshold scrape points to door-bottom sweep height or a new door-shoe. Jamb-edge rub points to a perimeter seal or a swing/hinge issue. Work the matching branch.

Step 2 (threshold branch) - Lift the door on its hinges by the knob with the door open. If the bottom sweep clears when lifted, the sweep/shoe is set too low; raise the sweep or trim the fin. If the door drops visibly when you let go, you have hinge sag (see Step 4), not a sweep problem.

Step 3 (perimeter branch) - Measure the installed seal thickness vs. the reveal it sits in. Kerf-in Q-lon and bulb seals are sized to a reveal range; a 7/16 in bulb crammed into a 1/4 in reveal will hold the door off the stop and push the latch stile into the opposite jamb. Confirm by removing the seal in the rub zone:

  • Rub gone with seal out: seal is over-thick or mislocated. Re-fit with the correct profile or relocate to the stop face.
  • Rub still present with seal out: the seal exposed a pre-existing condition - go to Step 4.

Step 4 - Hinge and swing check. With the seal section removed and the door still rubbing, sight the gap along the hinge stile vs. the latch stile. Uneven gap means the door has racked or a hinge screw is stripped. Tighten hinge screws (replace short screws with one 3 in screw into the framing at the top hinge to pull a sagging door up and back). Re-close and re-measure the reveal.

Step 5 - Compression set vs. interference. A correctly sized seal still rubs briefly until it takes a compression set over a few days. If the only contact is a light bulb-seal kiss that the door overcomes with normal closing force and the latch still throws, that is expected seal contact, not a defect. Reserve fitting work for seals the door cannot close against or that hold the latch from engaging.

Confirming diagnosis

You have it isolated when removing or thinning the seal in one zone makes the door swing and latch freely, and reinstating the correct seal profile restores the seal without reintroducing the rub. Cross-check the latch: the door should pull to the stop and the latch throw fully without lifting or shouldering. If the rub only returns with the door fully compressed against the seal and the latch still catches, you are within normal seal pre-load.

Remediation

  • Over-thick perimeter seal: swap to the correct kerf-in or bulb profile for the measured reveal, or move an adhesive seal from the door edge to the jamb stop face where it compresses straight on.
  • Sweep too low: raise the sweep on its slots, or trim the fin/brush so it kisses the threshold without drag while still sealing.
  • Hinge sag uncovered by compression: tighten hinges, drive a long screw into the framing at the top hinge to draw the door up.
  • Head-jamb interference: thin the head seal or shim the head stop rather than planing the door top.
  • Only plane the door as a last resort, after proving the seal and hinges are correct, and then re-prime and paint the bare edge so it doesn't take on moisture.
