Faucet Drips Only After Cartridge Replace Decision Tree
Why this matters
You replaced a worn cartridge to stop a drip and the faucet drips again - sometimes worse, sometimes from a new place. The reflex is to blame a defective new cartridge, but the failure pattern after a cartridge swap is usually one of a short list: debris flushed onto the new seals, a wrong or wrong-orientation cartridge, missed seats-and-springs, an over- or under-tightened retainer, or a supply-line drip you're mistaking for a faucet drip. Throwing a second cartridge at it without isolating which one wastes the part and leaves the customer with the same complaint. This tree separates "the cartridge is bad" from "the install or the system is the problem."
Symptom presentation
- Spout still drips after the new cartridge, steady or intermittent.
- Drip is new since the repair: a base leak, a handle weep, or a drip that only appears when the handle is in one position.
- Hot or cold only - one side weeps, the other is dry.
- Faucet drips immediately after shutoff, then stops (cartridge sealing) vs. a continuous drip (seat/seal or debris).
Quick checks
- Confirm the part. Compare the new cartridge stamp/part number to the faucet model. Moen 1200/1225, Delta RP, Kohler GP, and Price Pfister cartridges look similar across families; a near-miss cartridge seats but never fully seals.
- Cartridge orientation. Many cartridges have a hot/cold key or a flat that must index to the body. Installed 180 degrees out, the faucet runs backward and can weep.
- Pull the aerator and run the faucet. A spout drip that clears when you cycle the handle hard a few times is debris under the new seals.
- Check the seats and springs (Delta/two-handle compression and some single-handle). New cartridge, old or missing rubber seats and springs = drip. They are consumable and must be replaced with the cartridge.
- Dry everything and watch where the water actually originates - supply nut, mounting, handle base, or spout.

Spout drip branch: Step 2 - Shut the angle stops, pull the cartridge, and inspect the body bore. Grit, pipe scale, or a chip of old O-ring on the new cartridge's sealing land means debris got flushed in when you turned the water back on. Flush the lines: open both stops into a bucket through the open faucet body before reseating. Clean the bore, reinstall, retest. Step 3 - If clean and still dripping, check seats and springs (where applicable). Worn or omitted seats let the new ball/cartridge weep. Replace seats and springs as a set, springs small-end down into the seat. Step 4 - If seats are correct or the faucet doesn't use them, verify cartridge model and orientation against the manufacturer instruction sheet. Wrong family or reversed key: refit the correct cartridge in the correct index. Step 5 - Retainer/clip torque. Under-seated cartridges (clip not fully driven, retaining nut hand-tight) lift off the seal and drip; over-torqued plastic retainers distort the cartridge and drip. Seat the brass clip fully or torque the retainer nut to the maker's spec - snug, not gorilla.
Base/handle leak branch: Step 6 - A leak at the spout base or under the handle that started after the repair is almost always the body O-rings, not the cartridge sealing element. New cartridge, old hardened body O-rings = base weep. Replace the O-rings and lubricate with a non-petroleum (silicone) plumber's grease - petroleum grease swells nitrile/EPDM seals. Step 7 - If the leak is at the supply nut or shank, it's not the faucet repair at all; re-seat or replace the supply line and re-torque the coupling nut.
Confirming diagnosis
Isolated when a single corrective action stops the drip and a full handle cycle (full hot, full cold, mid, off) stays dry for several minutes under line pressure. Confirm there is no residual aerator drain (trapped water can mimic a drip for a minute after shutoff - wipe and wait). For a hot/cold-only weep, prove the side by shutting one stop at a time: the side that stays dry isolates the failing seat/seal to the live side.
Remediation
- Debris: flush lines through the open body, clean the bore, reinstall - the most common after-replace drip and a no-parts fix.
- Wrong/reversed cartridge: install the model-correct cartridge in the keyed orientation per the instruction sheet.
- Missing seats and springs: replace as a matched set every time the cartridge/ball comes out.
- Hardened O-rings: replace body and spout O-rings, silicone-grease only.
- Retainer torque: seat the clip fully or torque the nut to spec; don't crush plastic retainers.
- Supply-side weep: re-seat or renew the supply line and coupling nut.
- Always restore the aerator and check flow and temperature mix after the repair.
