Garbage Disposal Hums But Will Not Grind After Reset Decision Tree
Why this matters
A disposal that hums but does not spin is the classic "motor is energized, flywheel is not turning" signature. Hitting the reset button does nothing because the reset (thermal overload) already tripped from the stalled motor and re-armed. If you walk away after one reset, the customer calls back with a burned smell and a dead unit because a humming, locked-rotor motor draws locked-rotor current and cooks its windings in under a minute. The diagnostic order matters: clear the jam first, then chase the capacitor or bearing, and never leave the unit energized while it hums.
Symptom presentation
Switch on, the unit hums steadily, no grinding, no rotation. The reset button (red, on the bottom of the unit) may have popped before you arrived. Two distinct failure families produce the same hum:
- Mechanical jam: a bone, a peach pit, a piece of glass, or a foreign object wedged between an impeller and the grind ring. The motor is fine, the flywheel cannot move.
- Electrical fault: a failed start capacitor (on capacitor-start units) or a seized lower bearing. The motor tries to start, hums, and the overload trips.
A motor that runs free but with no jam present and still will not turn under load points at the capacitor or bearing, not the kitchen.
Quick checks
Kill power at the switch and the breaker before reaching into the chamber.
- Look down the throat with a flashlight. A visible foreign object is the answer; remove it.
- Insert the manufacturer's hex wrench (1/4 in Allen) into the bottom-center socket and rock it back and forth. Free rotation that breaks the jam loose is a confirmed mechanical jam. A socket that will not budge in either direction is a hard jam or a seized bearing.
- With power off, check that the reset button is seated (pushed in). A popped reset confirms the overload tripped.
- Verify the unit actually gets voltage: at the switched outlet or junction, confirm 120 V present only when the switch is on. No voltage means the problem is upstream (switch, outlet, breaker), not the disposal.
Isolation tree
Foreign object visible or felt in the throat?
- Yes: power off, remove with tongs or pliers (never your hand). Re-seat reset, restore power, test. Resolved if it grinds.
- No: go to step 2.
Does the bottom hex wrench turn freely after rocking it loose?
- Yes, it frees up and spins: was a jam. Re-seat reset, restore power, run water and test. Resolved.
- No, it will not turn at all: go to step 3.
With the unit unjammed (wrench turns by hand) but the motor still only hums under power?
- Motor hums, will not start, but the flywheel is free: this is an electrical/mechanical motor fault, not a kitchen jam. Go to step 4.
Capacitor-start unit, and the hum is the locked-rotor "trying to start" sound?
- Suspect a failed start capacitor. Go to Confirming diagnosis.
- Wrench turns but with heavy drag and grinding feel, not free spin: suspect a seized or failing lower bearing. The unit is at end of life. Go to Remediation, replace.
No hum at all, totally dead?
- That is a different tree: check switch, GFCI, breaker, and reset continuity. Not covered here.
Confirming diagnosis
For a jam, the confirming test is simple: after clearing, the hex wrench spins freely several full turns and the unit grinds normally with water running.
For a capacitor failure, the unit must be unplugged or de-energized at the breaker first. A bench multimeter with a capacitance range across the discharged start capacitor reads far below its printed microfarad rating (or open) when failed. A capacitor that reads near nameplate but the motor still will not start points back to windings or bearing. Many disposals do not have a field-replaceable capacitor; on those, a confirmed motor-side fault means replacement.
For a bearing, the tell is the wrench turning with grinding resistance rather than free spin, and often a brown rust streak or water intrusion past the lower seal. Bearings are not a field repair on residential units.
Remediation
Jam: Remove the object, re-seat the reset, run cold water, and grind a tray of ice cubes to confirm clean rotation and to scour the grind ring. Educate the homeowner: no bones, pits, fibrous peels, or grease.
Capacitor (where serviceable): With the unit fully de-energized and the capacitor discharged, replace with an exact microfarad and voltage match. Many sealed residential units are not designed for capacitor service; if the motor fault is confirmed and no service path exists, replace the unit.
Bearing / seized motor: Replace the disposal. A leaking lower bearing also means the unit may have shorted to the sink, which is a shock hazard. Match horsepower and mounting collar to the existing.
Replacement wiring: A hardwired unit must land its ground, and the circuit must match the unit's nameplate. A cord-and-plug unit must use the manufacturer-approved cord kit with strain relief.
Never put your hand into the disposal chamber, even with the switch off. Lock out the breaker before reaching in, and clear jams only with tools. A humming disposal is energized; leaving it humming for more than a few seconds risks burning the motor and can start a fire. Verify the unit is grounded after any service, and confirm the dedicated branch circuit and any required GFCI protection per NEC and local amendments before re-energizing.
