Just Fixed the Door, Now It Binds Elsewhere: Second-Fault Masking Decision Tree

Why this matters

A door that latched poorly, got planed or rehung, and now drags at a new point is a classic second-fault masking case. The original fault was loud enough to hide a quieter one; correcting it unmasked the second condition. The customer experiences this as "you broke something," but the second fault was present before the visit. The decision tree below isolates which class of second fault is in play so the return visit ends the cycle rather than extending it.

Step 1: Confirm what was actually adjusted on the original visit

Pull the prior ticket. Was material removed from the latch edge, the hinge edge, the top, or the bottom? Were hinges shimmed, replaced, or repositioned? Was the strike plate moved? Each adjustment shifts the geometry differently. Planing the latch edge moves the door toward the hinge side; shimming the lower hinge raises the latch-side top corner; resetting the strike does not change the slab at all and points the next investigation at the jamb or frame.

If hinges were swapped or shimmed, the slab is now rotating around a different axis than it was. A previously hidden warp, twist, or jamb-out-of-plumb condition becomes the new binding point.

Step 2: Identify the new bind location precisely

Mark with a strip of carbon paper or a wax pencil. Close the door slowly. The exact contact point determines the next branch:

  • Binds at top of latch edge against jamb: top of jamb is out of plumb toward the stop, or door is warped (cup or bow).
  • Binds at bottom of latch edge against jamb: bottom of jamb is out of plumb toward the stop, or floor has risen (new flooring under the slab swing arc).
  • Binds at hinge-side top: top hinge mortise too deep, or upper jamb pushed inward by trim.
  • Binds along entire latch edge: slab too wide for the new opening geometry; previous fit was masking it.
  • Binds at the head jamb (top edge of slab): head jamb has dropped, or shimming a hinge raised the slab.
  • Binds at floor on swing: new flooring installed between visits, or shimming lifted the slab path into a previously clear arc.

Step 3: Distinguish jamb problem from slab problem

Plumb the jamb with a 6 ft level on both faces and the stop. If any leg is out more than about 1/8 inch over the door height, the jamb is the problem and adjusting the slab will keep chasing tail. Common causes: settlement, framing shrinkage in a new build, water damage at the base of the jamb, or a previous trim job that pushed the casing.

Check the slab for cup and bow. Lay a straightedge across the face top to bottom and corner to corner. A slab cupped more than about 1/4 inch will bind no matter how the jamb is set. Solid-core slabs in damp basements and bathrooms are common offenders.

Step 4: Check the floor under the swing

A new carpet, an underlayment change, or a tile job between visits can lift the swing arc by 1/4 to 3/8 inch. The original door cleared because it was sagging into the old floor; the rehung door now sits true and meets the new floor head-on. Confirm by sweeping a credit card under the slab through the swing arc with the door closed and then 45 degrees open. A clearance loss at the open position points at the floor.

The fix is undercutting the slab, not re-shimming hinges. Mark the contact line, remove the slab, cut on a saw with a fine blade, and reinstall.

Step 5: Check whether trim or stop was disturbed

If the original visit removed and reset the door stop or any casing, the stop may now sit proud of the jamb plane. The latch closes but the stop catches the face of the slab. Run a finger along the stop with the door closed; any place the slab presses the stop hard before the latch seats is the contact point. Re-set the stop with a slight back-bevel.

Step 6: Confirm hardware is not the symptom

A misaligned strike that the customer is now noticing because the door swings free can present as "binds when I close it." If the latch tongue is catching the lip of the strike instead of seating in the mortise, the door appears to bind at the last 1/16 inch of travel. The mark on the strike face shows the tongue contact point; file or move the strike to receive it.

A hinge with a bent knuckle or a worn pin will also produce a roving bind that changes with humidity. Replace the hinge rather than chasing the bind.

Step 7: When the second fault is structural

If the jamb is out of plumb because the wall above the opening has settled, or the rough opening is racked, the fix is not at the door. Document the structural condition and price the work accordingly: reset the jamb, plumb and shim, or in a load-bearing wall, refer the customer to a contractor. Continuing to shave the slab to compensate for a racked rough opening produces a door that will not weatherstrip and will bind again on the next humidity cycle.
