Laminate Gaps At Seams Only In Winter After Install Decision Tree
Why this matters
Laminate that locks up tight in summer and opens visible gaps at the end joints every winter is behaving like a floating floor under low humidity - which means it's usually a moisture-control or installation issue, not a defective click joint. Winter heating drops indoor relative humidity, the planks lose moisture and shrink, and any condition that pins or stresses the field shows up as gaps at the weakest seams. The wrong move is to glue or face-nail the gaps shut; that destroys the floating action and creates a permanent peak or buckle when summer humidity returns. This tree separates "normal seasonal movement you manage with humidity" from "the floor was pinned/under-expansion-gapped/contaminated at install."
Symptom presentation
- End-joint (butt) gaps open across the field in winter and close again in summer.
- Gaps cluster in one area, near exterior walls, over a vent, or down a long run.
- Some planks have separated at the short-end click joint; long-side joints mostly hold.
- A faint click or movement underfoot near the gaps.
Quick checks
- Measure indoor RH and temperature. Most laminate is specced for roughly 30-50% RH and a set temperature range. Winter heating below ~30% RH drives shrinkage; that's the trigger, and a humidifier may be the whole fix.
- Check the expansion gap at the walls. Pull a base/quarter-round in a few spots. No gap or a gap stuffed with debris/fasteners pins the field so movement concentrates at seams.
- Look for pinch points. Heavy cabinets, a too-tight transition strip screwed through the plank, or a fastener catching the floor stops it from sliding back together.
- Confirm it floats. Tap a transition or pull a vent cover - is the floor actually free to move, or was a section glued/nailed?
Isolation tree
Step 1 - Seasonal correlation. Confirm the gaps track winter/low-RH and close in summer. If they only open and never close, or grow regardless of season, this is not normal seasonal movement - suspect a pinned floor or a failed locking joint (Step 4). If they cycle with the seasons, continue.
Step 2 - Humidity. Log indoor RH over a winter cycle. If RH is running well below the manufacturer's range, the planks are simply shrinking on schedule. Remedy: bring RH into spec (whole-house or room humidifier, manage venting/heating). Many "gapping" floors are within normal tolerance once RH is corrected, and the gaps largely close.
Step 3 - Expansion gap and pin points. With RH addressed but gaps still excessive, verify the perimeter expansion gap exists and is clear all the way around (under base, at pipes, doorways), and that nothing fastens through the floating field (transition strips must fasten to the subfloor in the gap, not pin the plank; base/shoe nails to the wall, not the floor). Free any pin point so the field can recover toward each other; a pinned floor forces all movement into a few seams.
Step 4 - Joint integrity / install defect. If seams open and don't recover even with good RH and a free perimeter, inspect the failed end joints. Look for:
- Tapped-up or damaged locking lips from install (over-driven tapping block) - the joint can't re-engage.
- Out-of-flat subfloor: a hump or dip lets planks pivot and unlock at the ends.
- Skipped/short-end stagger or no acclimation before install, leaving built-in stress. Remedy: lift and re-lock the affected runs, flatten the subfloor under the area to the manufacturer's flatness spec, and re-seat undamaged planks; replace planks with chewed-up click profiles.
Step 5 - Acclimation/install history. If the floor was installed without acclimating the planks to the room (or installed in summer high-RH conditions tight, then dried in winter), the baseline was wrong. This shows as wide first-winter gaps. Manage with RH; severe cases need select lift-and-reset after acclimation.
Confirming diagnosis
Isolated when the gaps correlate with measured low RH and respond to humidity correction (normal seasonal movement), versus gaps that persist with correct RH and a free perimeter and trace to a pinned field, damaged click joint, or out-of-flat subfloor (install defect). Confirm "floating and free" by pulling base and a transition: the floor should have a clear, clean expansion gap and no through-fasteners. If correcting RH and freeing the perimeter closes the seasonal gaps to within the maker's tolerance, the floor is performing normally and the remedy is humidity management, not repair.
Remediation
- Low RH: bring indoor humidity into the manufacturer's range; humidify in winter.
- Pinned perimeter/transition: restore and clear the expansion gap; fasten base to wall and transitions to subfloor, never through the floating field.
- Damaged/unlocked end joints: lift and re-lock, replace planks with damaged locking profiles.
- Out-of-flat subfloor: flatten to spec under the gapping area before re-seating.
- Set customer expectations: a floating laminate floor moves seasonally; humidity management is part of ownership, not a defect.
