Remediation
For a closer fault, set the latch-speed screw so the final inch closes with authority, increase closer tension to overcome weatherstrip resistance, and replace any closer that weeps oil or has lost its charge; add or adjust the wind chain so gusts cannot fling the door. For an alignment fault, relocate or shim the strike plate so its pocket meets the latch squarely, adjust latch projection, and elongate strike screw holes only as a last resort, then re-tighten. For a frame fault, re-square the door frame, shim and re-anchor it plumb, correct a heaved threshold, and re-hang a sagged door by tightening or shimming the hinges before re-aligning the strike.
