Toilet Rocks Again Weeks After Shim Decision Tree
Why this matters
You shimmed a rocking toilet, it sat tight, and weeks later it rocks again. Re-shimming the same way will fail the same way, because a toilet that re-loosens after a shim is telling you the base wasn't actually stabilized - the shims compressed or slipped, the closet bolts pulled or backed out, the flange is loose/below the floor, or the subfloor under the toilet is soft. Worse, a re-rocking toilet that's still leaking at the wax can rot the subfloor and make the rock permanent. This tree separates a shim/bolt redo from a flange repair from a subfloor repair, and flags the leak that turns a nuisance into a tear-out.
Symptom presentation
- Toilet was solid after shimming, now wobbles front-to-back or corner-to-corner again.
- Slight movement plus a faint sewer smell or a stain ring at the base = wax-seal leak.
- Closet bolts spin freely or the caps won't stay on.
- Floor feels spongy or the tile grout at the base is cracking around the bowl.
Quick checks
- Rock the bowl and watch where it pivots. Front-to-back over a high spot vs. diagonal corner movement tells you whether it's a level/shim issue or a flange/bolt issue.
- Pull the bolt caps and check the closet bolts. Spinning or loose nuts mean the bolts aren't anchored - shims won't hold a bowl the bolts can't clamp.
- Look for water/odor. Press a paper towel at the base seam after a flush; any moisture or smell points to a failed wax seal, often the real reason it loosened (rotted seal + movement feed each other).
- Probe the subfloor. Press firmly around the base and at the flange. A flange that moves with the floor or a soft, deflecting subfloor is the root cause many shims hide.
Isolation tree
Step 1 - Pull the toilet. You cannot diagnose a re-rocking toilet from the top. Shut the supply, drain, disconnect, and lift the bowl. Inspect the wax (smeared/blown out = it was leaking and moving), the flange, the bolts, and the subfloor.
Step 2 - Flange condition.
- Flange sits below the finished floor (common after new tile/flooring raised the surface): the bowl bridges the gap and rocks; the wax can't seal. Remedy: a flange extender (stacked, sealed) or a spacer ring to bring the flange to floor level, then a wax or a waxless ring rated for the height.
- Flange loose to the floor (screws pulled, plastic flange cracked): re-anchor to solid subfloor with new screws, or install a repair/spanner ring across the broken slots. A flange the closet bolts can pull up will always re-rock.
- Flange solid and at floor level: go to Step 3.
Step 3 - Bolts. New closet bolts seated in the flange slots, oriented so they can't slide, nuts to firm (not cracking) torque. If the prior bolts were short, slipping in the slot, or one-sided, that alone lets the bowl pivot. Use bolts that lock in the flange channel.
Step 4 - Subfloor. Probe the deck around the flange. Soft, delaminated, or water-rotted subfloor (often from the leaking wax) won't hold screws and lets the whole assembly flex. Remedy: cut back and replace the rotted decking, re-anchor the flange to sound framing/blocking. Shimming over rotted subfloor is the classic reason it "comes back."
Step 5 - Level and shims, last. With a sound flange, anchored bolts, and solid subfloor, set the bowl on a fresh seal and check level. Use rigid, non-compressible shims (plastic toilet shims, not folded cardboard or wood that crushes), placed where the bowl bridges, then snug the nuts evenly. Trim shims flush and seal the base perimeter (leaving a small gap at the back as a leak telltale per local practice).
Confirming diagnosis
Isolated when the root condition is visible with the toilet up - a low/loose flange, slipping bolts, or soft subfloor - and the matched fix lets the reset bowl sit dead solid with even nut tension and no shim doing structural work it can't hold. Confirm the seal: flush several times and check the base and the ceiling below (if accessible) for moisture. A toilet that's level, bolted to a sound flange on a sound deck, with rigid shims only filling minor gaps, does not re-rock.
Remediation
- Low flange: stack/seal a flange extender or set a height-rated waxless seal so the flange meets the finished floor.
- Loose/cracked flange: re-anchor or add a repair ring to solid subfloor.
- Bad bolts: new flange-locking closet bolts, even snug torque.
- Rotted subfloor: cut out and replace the decking, re-secure the flange to framing/blocking.
- Reset on a fresh wax or waxless seal, rigid shims only, perimeter sealed.
- Never over-torque the closet nuts - cracking the porcelain base creates a worse rock.
