Vanity Faucet Low Flow On Hot Side Only After Install Decision Tree

Why this matters

You set a new vanity faucet, opened both supplies, and the cold runs strong but the hot dribbles. A one-sided flow problem right after install is almost always something you introduced during the swap: a kinked or under-opened hot supply, debris flushed into the new cartridge or aerator, or the water heater dip-tube and sediment that the disturbance loosened. Chasing it as a faucet defect leads to a needless return and a second trip. The diagnosis is fast if you isolate side by side and work from the fixture back to the source.

Symptom presentation

Cold side delivers full flow; hot side is weak, sputters, or trickles. Common variants:

  • Hot weak at this faucet only, fine at the tub and kitchen: localized to this run or fixture.
  • Hot weak everywhere in the house, worse after the install disturbed the system: water heater or main hot issue surfaced by the work.
  • Hot starts okay then fades: debris migrating into the aerator or cartridge screen.
  • Hot pressure fine but volume low: a restriction, not a pressure loss.

Because both sides share the same aerator, a one-sided problem points upstream of the aerator on the hot path: hot supply valve, hot supply line, hot inlet screen, or the hot side of the cartridge.

Quick checks

  • Fully open the hot angle-stop. A stop left at half-turn is the number-one cause. Many quarter-turn stops feel open at 45 degrees but are not.
  • Inspect the hot flexible supply line for a kink or a tight loop behind the trap. A braided line crimped during the set chokes flow on that side only.
  • Remove the aerator and run both sides. If hot now flows strong, debris is lodged in the aerator screen; clean it. If hot is still weak with the aerator off, the restriction is upstream of the spout.
  • Pull the hot supply line off at the faucet inlet and direct it into a bucket; open the stop. Strong flow into the bucket means the supply is fine and the restriction is inside the faucet (cartridge or inlet screen). Weak flow into the bucket means the restriction is upstream (stop, line, or source).

Isolation tree

  1. Is the hot angle-stop fully open and the supply line free of kinks?

    • No: open the stop fully, straighten or replace the kinked line. Re-test. Often resolved.
    • Yes: go to step 2.
  2. With the aerator removed, does the hot side flow strong?

    • Yes: clogged aerator screen. Clean or replace the aerator. Resolved.
    • No: go to step 3.
  3. Disconnect the hot supply at the faucet inlet and flow into a bucket with the stop open. Strong flow?

    • Strong into the bucket: restriction is inside the faucet. Go to step 4.
    • Weak into the bucket: restriction is upstream (stop, line, or hot source). Go to step 5.
  4. Inside-faucet restriction: pull the cartridge and check the hot inlet screen and seat.

    • Debris on the inlet screen or under the cartridge: flush the body, clean or replace the cartridge. New faucets often trap solder bits and pipe-dope shards flushed in during install. Resolved after flush.
    • Cartridge clean, hot still weak through the body: defective cartridge or body. Replace cartridge.
  5. Upstream restriction: is hot weak only at this fixture or house-wide?

    • This fixture only: the hot stop is partially clogged or failing, or the hot line has trapped debris. Flush the line, rebuild or replace the stop. Go to Remediation, path C.
    • House-wide hot weakness: the install disturbed sediment or the water heater dip tube. Go to Remediation, path D.

Confirming diagnosis

The bucket test is the decisive split. Strong bucket flow with weak faucet flow confirms an in-faucet restriction; the cure is flushing the body and clearing the hot inlet screen on the cartridge. Weak bucket flow confirms an upstream restriction and sends you to the stop, line, or heater.

For debris (the most common post-install cause), the proof is recovered material: grit, pipe-dope curls, or solder pellets on the aerator screen or the cartridge inlet. Always flush the lines into a bucket before reconnecting a new faucet; that prevents this callback entirely.

For a water heater issue, confirm by checking hot flow at a tub spout (which usually has no aerator). If even the unrestricted tub spout runs weak on hot and cold is full, the problem is at the heater (sediment, failed dip tube) or the hot main, not the faucet.

Remediation

Path A (stop / line): Open the hot stop fully. Replace a kinked or undersized supply line with a properly routed braided line, leaving a gentle loop, no crimp.

Path B (aerator): Soak and brush the aerator screen, or replace it. Reinstall and confirm balanced flow.

Path C (in-faucet debris): Shut both supplies, pull the cartridge, and flush the faucet body by briefly opening each stop with the cartridge out and a rag over the openings. Clean or replace the cartridge and its inlet screens. Reassemble and re-test. Going forward, flush new supply lines into a bucket before connecting the faucet.

Path D (water heater / house-wide): Flush the water heater to clear sediment, and inspect for a degraded dip tube if hot volume is chronically low across the house. This is a plumbing scope beyond the faucet; advise the homeowner if a heater service is warranted.

Final: run both sides 60 seconds, confirm balanced flow and temperature, and check all new connections for leaks under the vanity.
