Water Under Sink the Day After Garbage Disposal Install: Commissioning Fault Decision Tree
Why this matters
Water under the sink the day after a new disposal installation is a commissioning fault. Assume it is tech-caused until the evidence says otherwise. The four causes each have a specific physical origin point, a specific visual tell, and a specific one-visit fix. Diagnosing correctly on the callback visit and repairing cleanly -- without defensiveness -- is what preserves the customer relationship. Arriving with a list of excuses does not.
Before troubleshooting: dry and isolate.
Remove everything from under the cabinet. Dry the cabinet floor and the outside of every pipe, fitting, and the disposal body with a dry rag or paper towel. Run water into the sink for 30 seconds, then run the disposal for 15 seconds with the water still running. Watch every connection with a flashlight. The first location where water appears is the source. Do not chase secondary drips before confirming the primary origin.
The four commissioning faults
Fault 1: Dishwasher knockout plug not removed.
Every disposal ships with a molded plastic knockout plug inside the dishwasher inlet nipple on the side of the disposal body. If the disposal is connected to a dishwasher drain hose, this plug must be punched out before the hose is connected. If the plug is left in and the dishwasher runs, the dishwasher drain has no path into the disposal and the drain hose pressurizes. Water backs up and can push past the hose clamp or pool at the connection point.
Identify this fault: the water appears at the dishwasher drain hose connection on the disposal, or the dishwasher is not draining properly in addition to the under-sink water. Confirm by disconnecting the dishwasher drain hose from the disposal nipple -- if the knockout plug is still present it is immediately visible inside the nipple.
Fix: with the disposal power off, disconnect the hose, use a flat-blade screwdriver and hammer to punch out the plug into the disposal chamber, retrieve the plug from the chamber (it must come out -- a loose plug in the grind chamber will jam the unit), reconnect the hose, and tighten the clamp.
Note: if no dishwasher is connected, cap the nipple with the provided cap. An uncapped open nipple is a direct leak path.
Fault 2: Drain connection to the P-trap not fully tightened.
The discharge outlet on the side of the disposal body connects to the P-trap via a slip-nut drain tailpiece. The slip nut is hand-tightened plus a quarter turn with pliers. A nut that is only hand-tight will hold briefly during a hose test but the vibration of the first full-load disposal cycle can loosen it enough to drip.
Identify this fault: water appears at the slip-nut connection between the disposal outlet and the drain pipe. The nut may feel loose when you grip it by hand after the cabinet has been wet.
Fix: tighten the slip nut firmly -- snug with pliers until resistance is felt, then a quarter turn more. Do not over-tighten PVC slip nuts; they crush and crack. If the nut was already tightened and still leaks, check that the neoprene washer is seated flat inside the nut and not folded or displaced.
Fault 3: Plumber's putty not seated at the sink flange.
The drain flange -- the visible ring at the top of the disposal where it meets the sink drain hole -- requires a bead of plumber's putty under its rim before it is pressed into the drain opening. If the putty bead was omitted, too thin, or not spread to the full rim, water draining through the sink can seep around the flange where it meets the sink surface and run down the outside of the disposal body.
Identify this fault: water appears on the top of the disposal body or the outside of the strainer neck, not at any of the drain connections below. Dry the disposal exterior completely, fill the sink with two inches of water, and release it. Watch the very top of the disposal body and the underside of the sink drain hole for the first drip.
Fix: loosen the three mounting ears from the mounting ring (the disposal snaps off the ring by rotating it), remove the snap ring and mounting assembly, lift out the flange from above, clean old putty residue from the flange rim and the sink surface, apply a fresh uniform rope of plumber's putty under the entire flange rim, reseat the flange, and reassemble the mounting.
Fault 4: Mounting ring not fully seated.
The disposal attaches to the sink flange via a three-lug bayonet mount. Rotating the disposal clockwise engages the three tabs of the mounting ring onto the three lugs of the flange assembly. If one or more lugs did not fully engage -- the unit was rotated almost but not quite to the locked position -- the disposal body hangs slightly low. As the weight of the drain connection and P-trap pulls the outlet downward, the partially seated mount allows micro-movement, and the P-trap slip connection leaks because the outlet alignment shifts.
Identify this fault: the disposal body has a slight downward tilt toward the outlet side. The slip nut at the drain outlet appears to be under side-load stress rather than aligned straight with the drain pipe.
Fix: disconnect the drain connection, rotate the disposal counterclockwise to release it from the mount, and re-engage all three lugs fully. Rotate clockwise until firm resistance is felt and the body is level. Reconnect the drain.
Leak check before closing up -- non-negotiable.
Before closing the cabinet on any disposal install, run water into the sink for 30 seconds, then run the disposal for 30 seconds with water still flowing. Inspect every connection with a dry paper towel: the sink flange underside, the mounting ring junction, the dishwasher nipple and hose clamp (if connected), the discharge outlet slip nut, and the P-trap connections downstream. Any moisture on the paper towel requires a fix before the cabinet is closed. This step takes 90 seconds and eliminates the callback entirely when done.
Do not energize the disposal to test it before confirming the drain and mounting connections are complete and dry. A partially seated mount or an uncapped open nipple left during install and not inspected before power-on can result in water contacting energized wiring. Confirm all connections are complete and dry before the first powered test.
