Supply Air Temp Fluctuates 5 F During Call: Decision Tree

Why this matters

Supply temperature that swings 5 F or more during a steady cooling call indicates a control loop oscillation - the system is hunting and capacity is lost on every swing. The customer feels the swing as drafts of warm air on otherwise normal cycles. Four control loops can produce this exact symptom: TXV hunting on flooded or starved feed, blower CFM modulation around a setpoint, variable-capacity compressor staging on a noisy sensor, and short cycling driven by zone-call instability. Each calls for a different fix. Use this tree to identify which loop is oscillating before adjusting any other parameter.

Symptom presentation

During a continuous cooling call, supply temperature at the plenum oscillates between 53 F and 59 F (or similar 5 F-plus band) on a roughly 30 to 120 second cycle. Return temperature is stable. Indoor humidity drifts up because each warm swing puts moisture back on the supply. No error code on the board. Indoor temperature satisfies but slowly. Capacity feels weaker than a steady-supply unit.

Variants:

  • Swing tracks audible TXV "hiss" cycle: TXV hunting.
  • Swing tracks blower RPM change: ECM hunting on static-pressure setpoint.
  • Swing tracks compressor capacity stage change on a communicating system: stage-change cycle, not hunting per se.
  • Swing only happens when two zones call together with mismatched satisfy times: zone control logic.
  • Swing extends to a 10 F band and supply briefly approaches return temperature: short cycling, not oscillation.

Quick checks before opening anything

Capture supply temperature trend with a clip-on probe or data logger at 5-second intervals. Look at the band (delta), period (seconds between peaks), and waveform (sinusoidal, sawtooth, square). Each shape points to a different loop.

Measure suction superheat at the evap exit during the swing. Hunting TXVs show superheat oscillating between 2 F and 18 F at the same period as supply temperature.

Read blower RPM or ECM commanded torque during the swing. ECM hunting on constant-airflow control shows RPM bouncing 80 to 200 RPM on the same period. PSC blowers do not hunt and a swing with a PSC blower is not a blower-control issue.

On a communicating variable-capacity system, log compressor demand stage and pull recent staging events from the diagnostic menu.

Isolation tree

Branch 1: TXV hunting.

  • Superheat oscillates 5 F-plus in phase with supply temperature - TXV is hunting. Causes: bulb loose or insulated from suction line, charge low (flash gas at TXV inlet), inlet pressure dropped by filter-drier restriction, internal stem wear.
  • Check bulb tightness with mechanical strap, ensure full contact on a horizontal suction line clock position between 4 and 8 (not on the top of the line).
  • Confirm liquid line subcool 8 to 12 F at TXV inlet. Low subcool with flashing TXV - low charge or restriction.
  • Replace TXV if external causes are eliminated and superheat oscillation persists.

Branch 2: blower control hunting.

  • ECM commanded RPM oscillates and supply T tracks - blower is hunting on static-pressure or airflow setpoint. Check duct static, look for collapsing flex sections that change cross-section under load, and confirm CFM target is achievable. Reduce target if static exceeds blower curve.
  • ECM control board firmware issue (specific model bulletins exist - check OEM) - flash or replace.
  • PSC blower with a tach signal that drops or noise - not hunting, motor-mount or capacitor fault. Replace.

Branch 3: variable-capacity compressor staging.

  • Compressor stages between 40 and 60 percent on a 1 to 3 minute cycle during a steady call - staging logic is reacting to a noisy zone-temperature input. Check thermostat or sensor location, verify return-air temperature is stable, and confirm staging dead-band is set per OEM (typically 0.5 F).
  • Inverter compressor with discharge-pressure feedback that swings - condenser airflow issue or charge issue (run the discharge-pressure-creep tree).

Branch 4: zone control.

  • Two zones calling, one satisfies, damper closes, static rises, blower compensates, supply T swings - zone bypass undersized or absent. Add or tune bypass.
  • Zone panel with staged demand outputs hunting between stages - panel firmware or configuration. Reconfigure per OEM.

Branch 5: airflow restriction transient.

  • Damper actuator that drives partway closed under thermal load and reopens when blower current drops - intermittent damper. Replace actuator.
  • Filter rack with intermittent bypass when filter shifts under static load - reseat or tape filter rack.

Confirming the diagnosis

After remediation, log supply temperature at 5-second intervals across 15 minutes of steady runtime. Variation should fall under plus or minus 1.5 F. Superheat should hold within 2 F of target. ECM RPM should hold within 50 RPM of commanded. Compressor demand should hold steady or change in clean steps with the dead-band respected. If supply T holds within plus or minus 1.5 F across the test window, the loop is no longer hunting.

A 24-hour humidity log will confirm the latent recovery - RH at the thermostat should fall 3 to 5 percent once supply temperature is steady.
