Bait Taken in Test Station but Not in Field: Bypass vs Normal Decision Tree
Why this matters
A test station inside the truck or shop showing strong bait take while field stations on the property show little to no take is a confusing diagnostic. The bait is palatable, the formulation is current, the active ingredient is within shelf life. Something about the property's stations is failing to deliver bait to the target population. The technician's read of why drives whether to relocate stations, change bait type, look for competing food sources, reassess the rodent species, or escalate to a structural inspection for bypass routes.
This pattern is most common in rodent programs but applies to any baiting program where the bait itself is verified palatable but the field placements are not producing the expected consumption. Getting the diagnosis right matters because the wrong move (switching bait when placement was the problem, or moving stations when bait type was the problem) burns weeks of program time.
What the test station tells you
A test station in a controlled environment with known rodent or insect activity (a bench colony, a holding facility, or a documented test site) confirms two things and only two things:
- The bait is palatable to the target species in a no-competition environment.
- The bait formulation is current and the active ingredient is delivering its expected effect.
It does not confirm the bait will be taken in any field property. Field conditions introduce variables the test station cannot replicate: competing food sources, neophobia, station design, station placement, station maintenance, and species identification accuracy.
The decision tree
Run this sequence at the property when field stations are not seeing take.
Is the target species confirmed present? Re-inspect for fresh evidence (fresh feces, fresh tracks in dust tracking patches, fresh sebum trails, fresh damage). No fresh evidence means the population may have moved, been controlled, or never have been at the density originally inspected. Action: confirm presence before adjusting the program.
Are stations placed on travel routes? Rodents follow walls and edges. Stations placed in open floor areas, mid-room, or away from harborage-to-food travel routes will not be encountered. Action: relocate stations to known travel routes. Tracking patches around suspected routes confirm the path before station relocation.
Are stations placed within the species' home range? House mice operate in a 10-30 foot home range. Norway rats in a 100-150 foot range. Roof rats in a 50-100 foot range with strong vertical travel. Stations beyond home range from the harborage will not be visited. Action: verify station spacing against species home range.
Are there competing food sources? Pet food left out, bird seed accessible, dumpster spillage, grain spillage in commercial settings, food waste in residential trash unsecured. A target population with abundant familiar food has no reason to investigate a novel bait. Action: identify and remove or restrict competing food sources before expecting bait take.
Is neophobia in play? Rats specifically (less so mice) show strong neophobia: avoidance of new objects in their environment for 3-14 days. Newly placed stations on a Norway rat property may sit untouched for 1-2 weeks before any visits. Action: leave stations in place for the full neophobia window before declaring failure. Pre-baiting with non-toxic material can shorten the window for trap programs but is not generally applicable to bait-only programs.
Are stations clean and bait fresh? Bait blocks left in stations for 60-plus days lose palatability through moisture absorption, oxidation, or mold. Pellets and meal baits degrade faster. Stations contaminated with insecticide overspray, cleaning chemicals, or human scent are avoided. Action: replace bait at the labeled interval or sooner, clean stations periodically with unscented water.
Is the species identification correct? A program built for Norway rat placement and bait will under-perform on a roof rat property because the travel routes are different (vertical for roof rat, ground for Norway). A program built for house mouse will miss deer mice with different bait preferences and home range. Action: identify droppings, footprints, and damage patterns to species, not just to "rodent."
Is there a bypass route? On structures where the harborage is in voids, attics, or basements with travel routes that do not require crossing the floor zones where stations are placed, rodents bypass the stations entirely. Action: inspect for void access points, attic-to-wall travel routes, and underfloor crawlspace travel. Station placement may need to move into voids or to floor-wall junctions on void access points.
The bypass case
Bypass is the case where everything in the program is correct on paper but the population is physically moving through a route that does not touch any station. Common bypass scenarios:
- Roof rat infestation with stations placed on the floor in living areas. Roof rats travel along the ceiling joists, attic floor, and wall tops. Floor stations see nothing.
- Norway rat infestation with stations placed indoors when rats are denning under a shed, foraging at an exterior dumpster, and never entering the structure. Indoor stations are not on the travel route.
- Mouse infestation in a wall void with exterior entry. Mice travel from outside entry through the void to interior food sources without crossing exposed floor where stations are placed.
- Commercial setting with stations along perimeter walls when rats are traveling overhead on conduit and pipe runs.
Confirm bypass by adding tracking patches (talc, fluorescent powder, or commercial tracking dust) across suspected non-station routes. Disturbance of the tracking patch with no station visit confirms the bypass.
Fix: relocate or add stations to the actual travel route. For void routes, that may mean opening void access for station placement; for overhead travel, elevated stations or replacing stations with traps in the overhead route.
The competing food case
When the property has abundant competing food, no bait formulation will outcompete a familiar food source the rodents are already conditioned to. Common in:
- Pet owners with free-feeding bowls.
- Properties with bird feeders, especially seed feeders with ground spillage.
- Commercial food service with poor housekeeping.
- Agricultural buildings with grain or feed access.
- Residential garages with stored pet food in non-rodent-proof containers.
