Bed Bug Mattress Encase vs Dispose Decision Tree
Why this matters
A customer in an active bed bug infestation reaches the moment in the conversation when the technician must decide: encase the mattress in a bed-bug-proof encasement and keep it, or dispose of it. The wrong answer in either direction costs the customer money or wastes the treatment. Premature disposal of an encasable mattress costs the customer the mattress price plus the new mattress plus the same disposal fee anyway. Premature encasement of a mattress that is structurally compromised (chewed, stained-through, infested in a damaged inner core) traps bed bugs inside for the 18-24 month encasement lifespan and the customer keeps reporting bites because the bugs inside the encasement can still bite through any tear or unsealed zipper. This tree separates encase-now from dispose-and-replace and routes each decision to a defensible scope.
Background - what encasement does
A bed-bug-rated mattress encasement (Allerzip, SafeRest, Protect-A-Bed BugLock) is a zippered cover that fully encloses the mattress, with a sealed zipper using a flap or locking mechanism rated to prevent bed bug passage. Approved products are tested against bed bug penetration per ASTM E2848 or similar.
Function: bed bugs inside the encasement starve (typically 12-18 months at room temperature), bed bugs outside cannot get into the mattress to harbor. The mattress remains in service. Customer education: even with encasement, the bed bug program continues - encasement is one tool, not the cure.
Lifespan: 18-36 months depending on product and use. Encasement must remain intact - any tear, sliced opening, or zipper failure restores access.
Decision drivers
Mattress condition. Cosmetically sound, structurally intact, recently purchased, customer values keeping it: candidate for encasement. Heavily stained, structurally damaged, chewed at edges, or already old (10+ years): candidate for disposal because a new mattress purchase is happening anyway in the next 1-3 years.
Severity of infestation. Light infestation found early, harborages in headboard and box spring more than in mattress: encasement is straightforward. Heavy infestation with adults visibly across the mattress surface, eggs in the seams, blood spotting throughout the cover: encasement is still possible (the bugs starve inside) but customer perception of sleeping on a known-infested encased mattress is difficult.
Customer psychology. Customer who feels "contaminated" by the mattress and cannot mentally accept sleeping on it again: disposal is the right answer regardless of encasement viability. Bed bug treatment is partly psychological - the customer's tolerance matters as much as the bug biology.
Box spring. Box springs are particularly hard to inspect and harbor heavily because of internal voids. Many programs recommend encasing the box spring even when the customer wants to keep the mattress and abandon the box spring (the encased box spring is often cheaper than replacing both). Some programs default to box spring disposal because of inspection difficulty.
Budget. Customer cannot afford new mattress + new box spring: encasement is the path that keeps the bed in service while the treatment program runs. Customer can afford and is motivated to replace: disposal of mattress + box spring plus same-day delivery of new bedding + encasement of new mattress prophylactically is the highest-confidence reset.
Path 1: encase the mattress
Best fit: cosmetically clean mattress, customer wants to keep it, infestation is light to moderate, customer accepts that bugs are sealed inside.
Process: with the customer, inspect the mattress on a known-cleaned floor. Document what is found in the seams, piping, and tag area with photos. Apply approved bed-bug-rated encasement (Allerzip or equivalent) per the manufacturer's instructions: pull encasement over mattress, zip fully, secure zipper closure flap.
Customer education: encasement must stay on for the full 18-month minimum. No removing it to wash sheets. No sliding it under the box spring (which can rip). Any tear must be reported immediately for product replacement.
Combined with: pre-encasement treatment of the bed frame with chlorfenapyr (Phantom) or non-pyrethroid product, dust application in joints and screw holes (deltamethrin Delta Dust or Tempo dust). Continued visits per the bed bug treatment protocol (2-3 follow-up visits typical). Customer-side: launder all bedding on hot, dryer on high for 30 minutes minimum.
Document the encasement install on the service ticket. The customer signs that they understand the protocol.
Path 2: dispose of the mattress
Best fit: heavily stained, damaged, or old mattress; customer cannot psychologically accept the encased mattress; customer can afford replacement; mattress has structural damage that compromises encasement integrity.
Process: do not just put the mattress on the curb. A bed bug mattress at the curb is a public health issue, gets picked up by someone, and spreads the infestation. Wrap the mattress in plastic sheeting (3 mil minimum), tape all seams, label "BED BUG INFESTED" with marker, arrange transport directly to disposal or scheduled bulk pickup.
Many jurisdictions have specific bed bug mattress disposal protocols - check the local solid waste authority. Some require sealed wrap, scheduled pickup, and even a fee for the special handling.
Replacement: customer purchases new mattress and box spring. Critical step: install bed bug encasement on the NEW mattress and box spring BEFORE first use, while the treatment program continues. This is prophylactic because the room itself still has bugs during the treatment window and the new mattress is at risk.
The "dispose and immediately replace plus encase" approach is the cleanest reset for customers who can afford it.
Path 3: encase the box spring, dispose of nothing, treat the mattress topically
Light infestation, all harborage in the box spring frame and headboard, mattress is relatively clean: encase the box spring (often where the heaviest harborage is), keep the mattress, treat the mattress seams with steam (target 130F+ at the seam surface, kills bed bugs and eggs on contact per IICRC S571 thermal disinfection standard reference points), and continue the program.
This is the smallest-spend answer when the inspection supports it.
Path 4: do not encase yet
