Bell Labs Contrac Blox Vs Final Bait Acceptance Fault Tree
Why this matters
You set Bell Labs Contrac Blox (bromadiolone, a second-generation anticoagulant) in exterior tamper-resistant stations and the take is flat. You swap to Final Blox (brodifacoum, also a second-generation anticoagulant) and still get no feeding, or partial feeding with continued rodent sign. Before you blame the bait, run a fault tree, because most "bait acceptance" failures are placement, competing-food, or station-condition problems, not active-ingredient problems. Both blocks are SGAR anticoagulants with similar palatability formulations; switching brand rarely fixes a non-acceptance issue and can mask a station or sanitation fault that will recur. This tree separates real bait-rejection from the far more common causes that look identical at the station.
Contrac Blox and Final Blox are EPA-registered rodenticides; the label is enforceable law under FIFRA. Brodifacoum and bromadiolone are highly toxic and pose primary and secondary poisoning risk to non-target wildlife, pets, and children. Use only EPA-compliant tamper-resistant bait stations, place per label, and follow all state restricted-use and bait-station requirements. Secondary-poisoning risk to raptors and predators is higher with brodifacoum (Final). Keep a stewardship log and never broadcast block bait.
Symptom presentation
Three patterns show up. Pattern A: zero blocks gnawed across multiple stations over a full service interval despite fresh droppings, rub marks, or sightings nearby. Pattern B: light gnaw marks or partial consumption but no population decline and continued sign. Pattern C: strong feeding at some stations and none at others on the same account. Each pattern points down a different branch. Note gnaw evidence on the block (teeth-mark pairs, corner removal), droppings size and freshness near stations, and whether the station shows entry sign (grease trails, tail drag, droppings inside).
Quick checks
Before any branch, confirm the basics: Is the block fresh and not rancid, moldy, or dusted with insecticide overspray from another service? Is the station intact, anchored, and oriented with runs against a wall or harborage? Are there competing food sources (pet food, spilled grain, garbage, fruit drop, dumpster overflow) within the rodents' foraging range? Is the species correct for the bait placement (roof rats forage vertically and may ignore ground stations; house mice forage in tight 10 to 30 foot loops and need stations every 8 to 12 feet, not every 30)? A "bad bait" call is invalid until these are cleared.
Isolation tree
Branch 1, no entry sign at the station: rodents are not visiting. This is a placement problem, not a bait problem. Move stations onto active runs, against walls, into harborage zones; for roof rats add elevated or vertical placements. Swapping Contrac for Final changes nothing here.
Branch 2, entry sign present but no gnawing (block untouched): rodents enter but reject the block. Check for competing food first (a well-fed rat ignores any bait). Remove or reduce the alternate food, then re-evaluate. If food is controlled and entry continues without feeding, consider neophobia in rats (new object avoidance can last days to weeks; leave stations in place longer before judging) or a spoiled/contaminated block. Only after competing food and block condition are cleared does an active-ingredient or formulation difference become plausible, and even then SGAR-to-SGAR brand swaps (bromadiolone to brodifacoum) seldom change palatability because both use grain-based block matrices.
Branch 3, partial feeding but no population drop: this is usually sub-lethal dosing from too few stations or too much competing food diluting intake, not bait failure. SGARs are chronic-acting; a single feeding can be lethal but the rodent keeps feeding elsewhere meanwhile. Increase station density on the active runs and remove competing food. Reassess after one full label-permitted interval; anticoagulant mortality lags 4 to 10 days after a lethal dose.
Branch 4, station-specific take variation (some hot, some cold): the cold stations are off the runs. Relocate them; do not change product.
Confirming diagnosis
To confirm a genuine bait-acceptance problem rather than a placement or sanitation one, run a non-toxic monitoring block (Bell Detex or equivalent) in the same stations for one interval. If Detex is consumed but the toxic block was not, you have a real formulation/palatability issue worth a product change. If Detex is also ignored, rodents are not visiting and the problem is placement or competing food, not the bait. This single test resolves most disputes. Confirm species ID from droppings and gnaw width before concluding.
Remediation
If the fault tree lands on placement: relocate to active runs, increase density (mice 8 to 12 feet, rats 15 to 30 feet along runs), add vertical placements for roof rats. If it lands on competing food: drive sanitation corrections (dumpster lids, pet-food storage, harborage cleanup) as the primary fix; bait is secondary to source reduction. If Detex confirms true non-acceptance: a formulation change can be justified, but consider moving to a soft bait or a different matrix rather than another grain block, since Contrac-to-Final is SGAR-to-SGAR with similar palatability. Always weigh secondary-poisoning risk (brodifacoum higher than bromadiolone) and prefer the lowest-toxicity tool that resolves the account. Maintain the stewardship log and reassess on the next interval.
