Customer Says Treatment Did Nothing: Coverage vs Product vs Source

Why this matters

"Your treatment did nothing, I'm still seeing them" is the call that decides whether you keep an account. It is also a translation problem. "Did nothing" is the customer's interpretation of an observation, and the observation could mean five completely different things: the product never reached the target, the product reached the target but the dose or timing was wrong, the population is resistant, there is an untreated reservoir feeding the structure, or the customer is seeing a normal post-treatment flush-out and panicking. Each of those has a different fix, and the first three look identical from the customer's side. This tree separates a true product or coverage failure from a source problem the customer never disclosed and from a misread of expected results, so the callback gets solved on the first return trip instead of becoming a chain of free re-services.

Symptom presentation

Probe the complaint until it resolves into a countable observable. Useful discriminators:

  • More, fewer, or same. "I saw three yesterday and one today" after an interior crack-and-crevice treatment is often a normal flush-out, not a failure. "Same heavy numbers as before treatment" is a real failure signal.
  • Where they are seen. New sightings in an area you did not treat point to coverage or a missed harborage. Sightings exactly where you treated point to product, dose, or resistance.
  • Timing relative to the treatment. Activity within hours can be flush-out; activity that never declined at all over the product's expected kill window points to a real failure.
  • Life stage seen. Fresh nymphs or new egg evidence weeks later signals an untreated egg reservoir or a re-infestation source, not a product miss on the adults.

Quick checks

  • Re-confirm the pest and the conducive conditions. Misidentification at the original visit is a common root cause; a "still have ants" call is sometimes a different species with a different bait preference.
  • Review the treatment record. Product, concentration, application sites, and date. A weak callback investigation skips this and re-treats blind.
  • Inspect for source. Exterior trailing, a neighbor unit in attached housing, a delivered-goods introduction (cardboard, used furniture), or a moisture or food source you cannot treat your way out of.
  • Check label and conditions. Was the product applied within label rate and to a labeled site? Was the area cleaned, painted, or washed after application, removing the residual?

Isolation tree

Branch from the single most diagnostic observable:

  1. Same or higher numbers in the treated zone, no decline at all? Suspect product or dose first. Verify the product is labeled for this pest and was applied at label rate to the right sites. If correct, suspect resistance, especially in bed bugs and German cockroaches with known pyrethroid resistance. Rotate to a different mode-of-action class.
  2. Activity only in areas you did not treat? Coverage gap. The harborage or trail was outside the treated zone. Expand the inspection radius and treat the missed void, trail, or entry. Not a product failure.
  3. Numbers dropped, then rebounded weeks later with fresh juveniles? Untreated reservoir or re-introduction source. Look for an egg-stage gap (many products miss eggs, requiring a follow-up timed to hatch), an adjacent untreated unit, or a recurring introduction the customer did not disclose.
  4. Brief uptick right after treatment, then decline? Expected flush-out. Many residuals and dusts drive insects out of harborage before they die. Educate the customer and confirm the trend is downward at the follow-up.
  5. No pest evidence on re-inspection at all? A sighting of an occasional invader or a look-alike, not an active infestation. Document and reset expectations.

The translation rule: "did nothing" almost always means one of coverage gap, untreated source, or normal flush-out. A true product or resistance failure is the least common of the five and should be the diagnosis you reach last, only after the record and the inspection rule out the others.

Confirming diagnosis

  • Monitor placement. Insect monitors or glue boards at suspected harborage and at the treated sites quantify activity objectively instead of relying on the customer's anxious count.
  • Sentinel re-inspection at the product's kill window. Return at the interval the product's residual and the pest's life cycle dictate, not when the customer panics, and compare counts.
  • Source confirmation. Trace a trail to its exterior or adjacent-unit origin; confirm a delivered-goods introduction by inspecting recent acquisitions.

Re-treating "harder" by exceeding the label rate is a FIFRA violation and a real safety and liability exposure, not a fix. The label is the law. A genuine product failure is solved by correcting the site, rotating mode-of-action, or addressing the conducive condition, never by over-applying. Document the actual root cause before any re-service.

Remediation

  1. Fix the diagnosed root cause, not the symptom: close the coverage gap, rotate chemistry for resistance, schedule a hatch-timed follow-up for an egg reservoir, or remediate the moisture or food source.
  2. Address the source the customer did not disclose: exterior exclusion, neighbor-unit coordination in attached housing, or a quarantine and inspection protocol for delivered goods.
  3. Set the follow-up at the biologically correct interval and define what success looks like in counts, so the next visit is measured, not argued.
  4. Document the record with product, sites, conditions, and the conducive findings so a future callback inherits the investigation instead of starting over.
