German Cockroach IPM

Why this matters

German cockroach (Blattella germanica) is the urban pest. Multifamily housing routes carry constant German roach work - apartments, low-income housing, restaurants. The classic spray-only approach fails: roaches develop resistance fast, populations rebound, customer complaints continue. Modern IPM combining bait + monitoring + sanitation + light insecticide is dramatically more effective + uses less product per visit. Techs who run this approach hold accounts; techs who spray + leave lose them.

Species ID

  • 1/2 - 5/8 inch long, light brown
  • TWO dark parallel stripes behind head (on pronotum)
  • Prefer warm + moist + dark + tight spaces (kitchens, bathrooms, food prep, electronics)
  • Almost exclusively indoors
  • Eggs in ootheca (egg case) carried by female until 24 - 48 hours before hatch
  • One ootheca: 30 - 50 nymphs; female produces 4 - 8 oothecae lifetime
  • Lifecycle: 50 - 100 days egg-to-adult; populations explode without intervention

Differential: American cockroach (1.5+ inch, reddish-brown, prefers wet basements + sewers); Oriental (1+ inch, dark, basement / crawl space); brown-banded (smaller, prefer drier upper interior spaces).

IPM procedure (per service visit)

Step 1: Inspection (20 - 40 minutes per unit)

  1. Hotspots first: under sink, behind/under refrigerator, behind microwave, behind range, dishwasher motor area, pantry, bathroom vanity, baseboard cracks
  2. Monitoring traps placed prior visit: count + categorize captures (juveniles, adults, gravid females)
  3. Live activity check: flush with light + listen; flashlight in dark corners
  4. Sanitation grade: photo + note customer's contribution to the problem (food crumbs, dishwater, clutter, grease film)

Document populations as Light (1 - 10 capture), Moderate (11 - 50), Heavy (50+).

Step 2: Sanitation (always - even if customer pushes back)

Walk the customer through what helps:

  • Wipe + clean food prep surfaces nightly
  • Trash to outdoor container nightly
  • Vacuum behind appliances + under sink every 1 - 2 weeks
  • Dry sink + dishwasher area before bed (water = roach magnet)
  • Seal food in glass / hard plastic (not bags / cardboard)
  • Address visible plumbing leaks (call landlord if rental)

Sanitation BY THE CUSTOMER is 40 - 60% of long-term success. Treatment without sanitation fails repeatedly + the route loses the account.

Step 3: Bait placement (the workhorse)

Cockroach baits with active ingredients fipronil, abamectin, indoxacarb, or hydramethylnon. Gels (Maxforce, Advion, Vendetta) + bait stations (Hot Shot, Combat for residential - though commercial-grade gel is more effective).

Placement strategy:

  1. Many SMALL placements, not few large
  2. Adjacent to harborage cracks + crevices - roaches travel less than 6 ft when hungry
  3. Under + behind appliances at the base
  4. Inside cabinets near hinges + back corners
  5. Bathroom under sink + at toilet base
  6. AWAY from cleaning chemistry (residue contaminates bait)

Per unit: 8 - 20 placements typical Light infestation; 25 - 50 Heavy.

Step 4: Light insecticide (NOT every surface)

  • Spot-treat ONLY at cracks + crevices where bait can't reach
  • DO NOT broadcast spray; this contaminates bait + the roaches won't feed
  • Insect growth regulators (IGRs - hydroprene, pyriproxyfen) sprayed at harborage; sterilize emerging adults
  • Avoid pyrethroid broadcast - drives resistance development

Step 5: Monitoring traps

Sticky traps (Catchmaster, Trapper Insect Monitor) at every prior placement.

  • Count captures per trap each visit
  • Captures dropping = treatment working
  • Captures flat or rising = re-treatment OR escalation needed

Step 6: Customer documentation + next visit

  1. Photo of treatment locations
  2. Sanitation checklist + customer signature
  3. Schedule re-inspection 14 - 28 days
  4. Heavy infestations: 3 - 4 visits 14 days apart; light: monthly

Heavy-infestation protocol (typical multifamily)

When a single unit goes >50 capture or visible-daytime adults:

  1. Notify property manager - adjacent units must be inspected (roaches travel through wall voids)
  2. Schedule treatment of ENTIRE building or at minimum adjacent units (above, below, both sides)
  3. Pre-treatment customer prep: empty cabinets, refrigerator interior cleaned, kitchen full sanitation
  4. Aggressive bait deployment + IGR application
  5. Follow-up at 14 days; expect 50 - 80% population reduction
  6. Continue monthly visits until 4 consecutive clean visits

Resistance management

German cockroach develops resistance to single-active-ingredient programs within 2 - 5 generations.

  • Rotate bait actives every 6 - 12 months (fipronil โ†’ indoxacarb โ†’ abamectin โ†’ hydramethylnon)
  • Document active ingredient + lot at every visit
  • If population unresponsive after 3 visits of one active, switch even if calendar says don't

Bait aversion is the single biggest German roach treatment failure mode. Roaches genetically biased to avoid the sugars in many baits don't feed + don't die. If a population isn't responding to bait, the roaches may be glucose-averse. Switch to a bait formulated for aversion (Advion Evolution, Vendetta Plus) using protein attractants instead of sugar. Have both types in the kit + know which you applied where.

Health-department audits in commercial kitchen + multifamily housing reference these records - incomplete documentation = lost account.
