Just Treated and Activity Spikes Next Day: Flush vs Failure Post-Service Decision Tree

Why this matters

The post-service spike call is one of the most misread events in route pest control. A customer treated yesterday calls in panic this morning saying activity is worse than before the service. The technician's read of that call drives whether the next visit is a no-charge re-treat at a small operational cost, a chargeable inspection that documents a different fault, or a real warranty failure that demands product, technique, or scope review.

Get the read wrong toward "it is just flush, give it 48 hours" and you miss real failures, the customer loses confidence, and the cancel comes 30 days later. Get the read wrong toward "we failed, re-treat free" and you spend product and labor on a normal post-service event that would have resolved on its own, and you train customers to expect a return visit every time they see a bug.

This tree separates the four most common patterns: expected flush, scope mismatch, technique gap, and product or resistance failure.

Knowing what flush looks like

Flush is a real, documented behavior for several common targets when properly treated. The pest moves out of harborage to escape the active ingredient, becomes visible on surfaces it would not normally occupy in daylight, and dies within hours to a few days depending on the product and the species. Customers see "more bugs" because they see bugs at all, and because the dying ones are moving slowly and obviously rather than hidden.

Expected flush patterns:

  • German cockroaches after a non-repellent bait or non-repellent residual application. Increased daytime visibility for 24-72 hours, dying or stunned individuals on floors and lower wall surfaces, concentrated near former harborages (under fridge, behind dishwasher, in cabinet voids near sinks).
  • Ants after a non-repellent residual or bait application. Increased trail visibility as workers contact treated surfaces and bring active ingredient back to the colony. Trails often shift location as foraging patterns disrupt.
  • Bed bugs after a residual flushing agent. Brief surge of visibility on mattress seams, headboard, and adjacent furniture as bugs leave deep harborage.

What flush does NOT look like:

  • A new species appearing that was not present at the original inspection.
  • Activity in a room or zone that was not part of the original treatment scope.
  • Heavy live, healthy-moving activity 5-7 days post-service with no dead or dying specimens visible.
  • Customer reports of bites, droppings, or damage continuing to accumulate past day 7.

The decision tree

Ask these in order on the callback intake or first re-inspection observation. Stop at the first match.

  1. Is the customer describing a different pest than the original target? GO TO scope mismatch path. Flush does not produce a different species.
  2. Is the activity in an area NOT inspected or treated on the original visit? GO TO scope mismatch path. Flush is concentrated near treated harborage, not in untreated zones.
  3. Is the callback within 72 hours of service AND the activity matches the expected flush pattern for the product class used AND dead or dying specimens are present? This is FLUSH. Confirm with the customer, document the expected window, schedule a follow-up inspection at day 10-14 to verify the kill.
  4. Is the callback within 7 days AND no dead specimens are visible AND live activity looks healthy (fast-moving, normal posture, breeding-age individuals)? GO TO technique or product failure path.
  5. Is the callback past 14 days with renewed activity? This is not a post-service event. Treat it as a normal recurrence and run the standard recurrence triage.

Scope mismatch path

A scope mismatch means the original inspection or service did not cover the source. The treatment worked on what was treated, but the actual infestation extends beyond it. Common scope mismatches:

  • Adjacent unit in multi-family. Treated unit shows clean; activity migrates from untreated neighbor through shared walls, plumbing chases, or common HVAC.
  • Untreated exterior source. Indoor-only service on ants or roaches when the colony or harborage is in the exterior perimeter, mulch beds, or structural voids accessible from outside.
  • Skipped room or zone. Customer denied access (locked basement, "we just had a baby do not spray that room"), or technician deprioritized a room that turned out to be the harborage.
  • Wrong target species identified. Treatment correct for the suspected species, wrong for the actual species. Common with cockroach species confusion (German vs American vs Oriental) or ant species confusion (odorous house vs Argentine vs carpenter).

Action: Re-inspect with full scope. Document the previously uncovered area. This is typically a billable expansion of the original service, not a warranty re-treat, but practice varies by contract terms. The first call is whether the original scope was clearly agreed to in writing.

Technique or product failure path

Live activity at day 5-7 with no dead specimens points to one of:

  • Insufficient coverage. Spot treatment where a perimeter band was needed, or perimeter only where crack-and-crevice was needed. Review the technician's application notes against the harborage map.
  • Wrong formulation for the substrate. Water-based residual on highly porous concrete or unsealed wood absorbs the active ingredient out of the contact zone within hours. EC or microencapsulated formulations are designed for porous surfaces; check product selection against substrate.
  • Resistance. Documented in German cockroach populations to several pyrethroid classes, in bed bugs to most pyrethroid classes, in some house fly populations to organophosphates. Confirm by switching to a different mode-of-action class and observing.
  • Reintroduction. Customer travel, used furniture acquisition, or guest visit re-introduced the pest. Common with bed bugs and German cockroaches.
  • Sanitation or harborage condition that overwhelms the treatment. Treatment works on contact and short-residual exposure; if the breeding rate exceeds the kill rate due to extreme food, water, or harborage availability, populations rebuild.

Action: Re-treat with attention to the specific gap identified. If resistance is suspected, rotate to a different mode of action class. If sanitation overwhelms treatment, the conversation with the customer about contributing conditions has to happen or the next service will repeat the same outcome.
