Mouse vs. Rat - Identification and Baiting Strategy

Why this matters

Mice and rats are different species with different behaviors, food preferences, ranging distances, and treatment strategies. The customer says "I have mice" and might be right or might actually have rats. The wrong identification leads to bait stations placed at the wrong intervals, wrong bait choice, and ineffective treatment. This article covers the identification approach and the species-matched baiting strategy.

Identifying the species

House mouse (Mus musculus):

  • Adult body: 2.5-3.5 inches (excluding tail)
  • Tail: as long as the body
  • Weight: 0.5-1 oz
  • Color: grayish-brown to light brown
  • Droppings: 1/8-1/4 inch, pointed at both ends, rod-shaped
  • Range: 10-30 feet from nest
  • Climbs: yes, excellent climber
  • Food preferences: seeds, grains, sweet foods, peanut butter
  • Reproduction: 5-10 litters per year, 5-6 pups per litter

Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) - brown rat, sewer rat:

  • Adult body: 7-10 inches (excluding tail)
  • Tail: shorter than body length
  • Weight: 7-18 oz
  • Color: brown to grayish-brown
  • Droppings: 3/4 inch, blunt at both ends, capsule-shaped
  • Range: 100-150 feet from nest
  • Climbs: poor climber; prefers ground level
  • Burrows: yes, burrows in soil under structures
  • Food preferences: meat, fish, fresh vegetables, but eats most things
  • Reproduction: 3-6 litters per year, 8-12 pups per litter

Roof rat (Rattus rattus) - black rat, ship rat:

  • Adult body: 6-8 inches (excluding tail)
  • Tail: longer than body
  • Weight: 5-9 oz
  • Color: black to dark gray
  • Droppings: 1/2 inch, pointed ends, banana-shaped
  • Range: 100-300 feet from nest
  • Climbs: excellent climber; prefers elevated nests (attics, trees, rooflines)
  • Food preferences: fruits, nuts, seeds, vegetable matter
  • Reproduction: 3-6 litters per year, 5-8 pups per litter

The roof rat dominates in coastal Southern California, Texas, Florida, and parts of the Pacific Northwest; the Norway rat dominates elsewhere in the US.

Field identification

Dropping size and shape: most reliable identification:

Fresh droppings are moist and dark; old droppings are dry and gray. Count droppings per area to estimate infestation severity - heavy infestations produce dozens to hundreds of droppings per crawlspace or attic.

Track size: if visible:

  • Mouse: 3/8 in stride length
  • Rat: 2-3 in stride length

Gnaw marks: smaller, more numerous on softer surfaces for mice; larger, deeper marks for rats.

Runways: rodents follow predictable paths against walls, along edges:

  • Mouse: thin runs, 1/4 inch wide grease marks
  • Rat: thicker runs, 1/2-1 inch grease marks (rub marks from body oils on walls)

Burrows: only Norway rats burrow extensively. Roof rats and mice don't.

Sightings: a customer who sees a small fast-moving brown animal almost always saw a mouse. A larger, slower animal is likely a rat.

Baiting strategy by species

Mice:

  • Bait stations every 10-15 feet along walls
  • Multiple stations per room (mice don't travel far)
  • Smaller bait blocks
  • Sweet baits work well (peanut butter, chocolate scent)
  • Block bait blocks should be small for mouse stations (mice can carry only small pieces)

Norway rats:

  • Bait stations every 25-50 feet along walls, fence lines, around foundation
  • Larger bait blocks
  • Meat / fish-based or grain-based bait
  • Stations placed near visible burrows
  • Outdoor stations along travel routes

Roof rats:

  • Bait stations need to be elevated - roof rats avoid ground-level stations
  • Place in attics, on top of equipment, in tree limbs near the structure
  • Fruit / nut-based bait
  • Travel routes are at roofline, tree branches connecting to the home

Single-feed anticoagulants are the most common professional baits because they require only one feeding (vs. multi-feed which requires several visits). Bromethalin is faster but more acutely toxic to non-targets.

EPA restrictions

The EPA has progressively restricted rodenticide use to reduce non-target wildlife poisoning:

  • Single-feed second-generation anticoagulants (brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difenacoum, difethialone) are restricted to certified pesticide applicators since the 2008 Risk Mitigation Decision
  • Tamper-resistant bait stations are required for outdoor use of these products
  • Consumer-grade rodenticides at retail are typically the multi-feed anticoagulants or alternative chemistries
  • State-specific restrictions in California (AB 1788, effective January 2021) further restrict second-generation anticoagulants in many residential settings

The pest control technician must hold the appropriate state license to use restricted-use baits.

Tamper-resistant bait stations

Required for any outdoor baiting:

  • Lockable design preventing access by children and pets
  • Compatible with the specific bait product
  • Anchored or weighted to prevent removal
  • Labeled with the active ingredient and contact information
  • Inspected and refilled per the service schedule

Inside stations may be non-locking depending on the situation (no children or pets in the area, secure environment).

For a typical residential rodent treatment:
