Seal Wall Voids for Pest Exclusion
Goal
Seal wall voids + structural gaps that pests use to enter or hide inside the home. Exclusion work that's done correctly is the difference between "chemical-only treatment with returning pests" and "permanent fix that ends the recurring problem." Wall void sealing is specialty work distinct from exterior caulking; it requires careful material selection so the seal lasts + doesn't trap pests INSIDE.
Prerequisites
- Inspection light + camera (verify what's inside the void before sealing)
- Copper mesh + caulk (rodent-proofing combo)
- Expanding foam sealant (Stuf-Fit, Great Stuff Pestblock)
- Hardware cloth (1/4" mesh for larger openings)
- Silicone caulk OR polyurethane caulk (exterior-rated)
- Drill + screws + screwdriver
- 30 - 90 minutes per void depending on size
Steps
- Identify the void. Common entry points include:
- Gaps where utilities (gas, water, electrical) penetrate the wall
- Soffit-eave junctions
- Sill plate + foundation interface
- Behind exterior siding
- Under kitchen + bathroom cabinets where pipes come through floors
- Garage door bottom seal areas
- Verify nothing is alive in the void before sealing. Closing in live rodents creates worse problems:
- Decomposing animal smell for weeks
- Maggot infestation that follows
- Customer's review
- For active rodent situations:
- Set traps OR bait stations near the suspected entry
- WAIT until activity stops (typically 1 - 2 weeks)
- THEN seal the void
- For voids you can probe but not see into:
- Bait the area + monitor for 1 - 2 weeks
- If no activity, seal
- Material selection by gap size:
- < 1/4 inch: silicone or polyurethane caulk only
- 1/4 - 1 inch: copper mesh + caulk overcoating (rodent-proof + sealed)
- 1 - 3 inches: hardware cloth + expanding foam, with caulk finish
- > 3 inches: structural patch (plywood + caulk + foam OR refer to carpenter)
- For utility penetrations (gas, electrical, water):
- Pack copper mesh AROUND the pipe / conduit
- Apply expanding foam (Pestblock variety) on top
- Trim flush after foam cures
- Final caulk bead at the surface for weather resistance
- Document with before + after photos. Customer needs to see what they paid for.
Verification
- All accessible voids sealed
- No live trapped rodents or insects (verified BEFORE sealing)
- Seal flush + visually finished
- Photo documentation in customer file
- Customer signs the field report
Material notes
- Why copper mesh + caulk? Steel wool rusts (stains + structural failure within months). Aluminum mesh is too soft (rodents chew through). Copper mesh is dense enough that rodents reject it + corrosion-resistant.
- Why expanding foam SPECIFICALLY Pestblock variety? Standard expanding foam is gnawable by rodents within weeks. Pestblock has additives + density that resists chewing.
- Why NOT standard putty or expanding foam alone? Both materials degrade or get chewed; aren't durable in the field.
NEVER seal a wall void without verifying no live pests are trapped inside. Rodents WILL die in the void; the smell from decomposing animals can persist for 2 - 4 weeks + attracts flies + creates a far worse customer experience. ALWAYS bait + wait before sealing. This is the #1 mistake new techs make on exclusion work.
