Wasp Multiple Nests vs Single Source Decision Tree
Why this matters
A customer calls reporting a wasp problem and the technician arrives to find one visible nest, treats it, and gets a callback in two weeks for "the same problem." The fork is whether the property has a single visible nest with one undetected satellite nest, multiple visible nests from a single species' seasonal foundress production, or two different species occupying the same structure independently. Treating the one visible nest without searching for additional nests buys the next call. A systematic species ID and a foundress count survey at the first visit prevents the cycle.
Symptom presentation
Pull the species ID from the prior visit if recorded. Paper wasps (Polistes species) build open umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, in mailboxes, and inside gas grills; one foundress queen per nest, populations typically under 100 individuals. Yellowjackets (Vespula species) build enclosed papery nests in voids, ground burrows, or attics; populations can reach several thousand by late summer. Bald-faced hornets (Dolichovespula maculata) build large football-shaped aerial nests; populations a few hundred to a thousand. Mud daubers and cicada killers are solitary and rarely warrant treatment; identify before treating.
Each species has different multiple-nest patterns. Paper wasps in a productive year may seed 5 to 15 small nests across a property as foundress queens disperse from a single overwintering site. Yellowjackets seed only a few nests per property but the nest size and aggressiveness scale dramatically through summer. Bald-faced hornet nests are usually solitary on a property but the conspicuous aerial nest distracts from a separate yellowjacket nest in the ground or wall.
Quick checks on site
Walk the perimeter and look for foraging wasps. Trace foragers back to the nest entry; yellowjacket workers fly in straight lines to and from the nest entry and the entry is locatable by sitting 10 to 20 feet away on a sunny day and watching the air corridor. Paper wasps return to the nest in a slower curving flight and the nest is usually visible from the ground.
Inspect every overhang, soffit, attic vent, gable end, basement window well, ground burrow, and structural void. A flashlight survey of soffits at dusk catches small early-season paper wasp nests before they mature. Photograph each nest found with a position reference.
Inspect the prior treatment site. A treated nest with new wasps walking the cells indicates either recolonization or a separate population using the structure. Confirm the prior treatment was applied per the product label per FIFRA; many wasp aerosols require direct nest application at dawn or dusk with all returning foragers in the nest.

Start with species.
Paper wasp, single nest: standard treatment per the product label, then sweep the property for satellite nests under every overhang. A foundress year produces multiple small nests; finding one and missing the rest is the typical first-visit failure. Schedule a 14-day recheck.
Paper wasp, multiple nests found: treat all visible nests per the label. Educate the customer that paper wasp populations cycle annually and the overwintering foundresses select sheltered sites; physical exclusion (sealing gaps around shutters, mailboxes, and eaves) reduces the following year's nest sites.
Yellowjacket, single nest: locate the nest entry by tracking foragers. Treat per the product label at dusk when foragers have returned. Some labels require a dust application directly into the entry; aerosols sprayed at the entry without dust application at the void are typically incomplete. Verify the active and formulation against the label use directions.
Yellowjacket, multiple nest entries: rare but possible on large properties or in heavy-pressure years. Treat each entry separately per the label. The combined treatment effort may exceed a single visit; schedule the work over multiple visits within the active season.
Bald-faced hornet, single aerial nest: treat per the product label with appropriate PPE. The nest is large, the colony is defensive, and the technician needs full bee suit protection per OSHA general duty and the operator's PPE program. Aerial nest removal in residential settings may require ladder work; verify ladder safety per OSHA 29 CFR 1910 ladder requirements.
Mixed species (one paper wasp plus one yellowjacket on the same property): treat each per its species protocol. Do not assume one treatment covers both.
Mud dauber or cicada killer: confirm species and educate customer. These are beneficial solitary species rarely requiring treatment; some product labels exclude them from labeled use.
Confirming the call
Document the species ID, the count of nests found and treated, the treatment product and method, and the property exclusion recommendations. Photograph each nest before treatment with a position reference. Schedule a 14-day post-treatment recheck; absence of new foraging at 14 days confirms the treatment held. Persistent foraging at 14 days indicates either a missed nest, a recolonization (rare in mid-season), or treatment failure requiring product review.
Remediation by branch
Paper wasp comprehensive sweep: treat all visible nests, document satellite nest locations in the customer record for the next season.
Yellowjacket void treatment: locate the entry, treat per the label with the appropriate formulation (dust into the entry for void colonies, aerosol direct application for accessible nests). Do not seal the entry within 24 hours of treatment; returning foragers must contact the treated material.
Bald-faced hornet aerial removal: full PPE per OSHA general duty, ladder safety per OSHA 29 CFR 1910, label-compliant treatment.
Customer exclusion recommendations: written guidance documenting nest-site potential locations (sheltered overhangs, ground voids, attic vents). The customer can reduce next year's foundress success by sealing or screening these locations during the off-season.
OSHA general duty clause requires the employer to provide a workplace free from recognized hazards. Wasp removal work creates a stinging-insect hazard; a documented PPE program including bee suit, gloves, face protection, and a stinging-insect anaphylaxis response plan is the operational baseline. The OSHA 29 CFR 1910 Personal Protective Equipment standard covers the PPE requirements. FIFRA 7 USC 136j(a)(2)(G) makes label compliance a federal requirement. State law including Texas Occupations Code Chapter 1951 and 7 TAC 7.235 sets the licensing and recordkeeping requirements. Customers with documented stinging-insect allergy require additional pre-work communication and clear PPE availability for any returning resident.
