Why this matters
When a pantry or a food account has an unidentified pest, the monitor you deploy first decides how fast you reach an ID and a source. The three monitor families catch different things: glue boards catch crawling insects and small rodents non-selectively, pheromone traps catch a specific target species' adults by attracting them, and snap traps catch rodents. Stored-product pest calls go wrong when the tech reaches for a pheromone trap before knowing the species (a pheromone lure is species-specific and useless against the wrong target) or a snap trap when the pest is an insect. Symptom presentation
The customer reports webbing in flour, small moths flying in the kitchen, tiny beetles in a cabinet, grubs or larvae in a grain or pet-food bag, or unexplained holes in packaging. The observable that anchors monitor choice is the life stage and movement: flying adults near the ceiling and webbing point to a stored-product moth; small crawling beetles in product point to a stored-product beetle; larvae or "worms" in product without a clear adult mean the adult stage is still hidden. A non-insect option (a small rodent in a pantry) shows droppings and gnawing rather than webbing or larvae.
Quick checks
Gather enough to pick the first monitor intelligently:
- Look for the most diagnostic evidence first: webbing and flying moths (moth pheromone candidate), beetles in product (beetle pheromone or glue candidate), droppings and gnawing (rodent monitor).
- Inspect the infested product and adjacent packages; locate the source item before placing anything.
- Note life stages present. Larvae only means you need to find or trap the adult to ID; adults present narrow the species.
- Check the account type. A food-handling facility constrains which monitors and placements are allowed and where toxicants can go.
- Confirm whether the goal is identification (unknown species) or knockdown of a known one; an unknown calls for the broadest-ID-yield monitor first.

- Unknown crawling insect, mixed or unclear evidence, no species yet: deploy non-selective glue monitors first. They catch whatever is moving and give you specimens to identify without needing to know the species in advance. Glue boards are the correct first move when the goal is ID, because a pheromone lure for the wrong species catches nothing and tells you nothing.
- Flying moths plus webbing strongly suggest a stored-product moth: a species-targeted pheromone trap is appropriate as a confirming and monitoring tool, but only because the moth evidence already narrows the target. Use the pheromone trap to confirm the species, locate the source by catch density, and monitor the trend. Still inspect for and remove the source product; the trap monitors, it does not eliminate.
- Small beetles in product, species suspected: if a specific stored-product beetle is suspected, a matching pheromone or food-attractant monitor confirms and locates it; if the beetle is unidentified, start with glue and specimen ID, then add the matching pheromone monitor once identified.
- Droppings, gnawing, or a sighting indicate rodent, not insect: the insect monitors are wrong. Use snap traps (and tracking patches for confirmation) along runs. Do not place a pheromone trap for a rodent problem.
- Larvae only, no adult to ID: place glue monitors and rear or hold a sample to obtain the adult, or wait and re-inspect; the adult is what you identify to species. Pheromone choice waits until you have the adult ID.
Confirming diagnosis
Confirm by reading the monitors against the inspection. Glue catches plus visual ID give the species. A pheromone trap confirms a suspected species by catching its specific target adults and, by catch density across multiple traps, points to the source location (highest catch is nearest the source). Snap-trap and tracking-patch catches confirm rodent. The monitor's job in an unknown situation is to produce an identifiable specimen and a source direction, not to control the population.
Remediation
The monitor identifies and locates; remediation is source removal first. For stored-product insects, find and discard the infested product, clean spillage and residue from cracks and shelving, and treat harborage per label; pheromone traps then monitor for resurgence. For rodents, exclusion and trapping. Never rely on monitors as the treatment; a pheromone trap left as "the control" lets the population persist in the unfound source.
