Acid Wash Versus No-Drain Versus Replaster Stained Surface Decision Matrix

Why this matters

When a plaster pool is stained, discolored, or rough, the choice between a no-drain stain treatment, a full drain-and-acid-wash, and a replaster is a high-stakes operational call. Acid-washing strips a measurable layer of plaster every time and a surface only tolerates a few in its life, so over-prescribing it shortens the pool's lifespan and risks a structural pop-up if the pool is drained over a high water table. Under-prescribing it leaves a customer paying repeatedly for treatments that cannot fix a worn-out surface. This matrix matches the surface condition, stain type, plaster thickness, and water-table risk to the correct intervention so the tech does not drain a pool that should have been spot-treated, or keep treating a surface that is past its service life.

Decision factors

  • Stain type: metal (iron, copper, cobalt), organic, calcium scale, or general dinginess/etch.
  • Whether the stain lifts under a localized ascorbic-acid or sequestrant test versus resisting all in-water treatment.
  • Plaster age and remaining thickness; whether the surface is exposing aggregate or is delaminating.
  • Water-table and hydrostatic risk: can the pool be safely drained, or must work be done with water in it.
  • Surface roughness and etch independent of color.

The three options

No-drain treatment keeps water in the pool and uses sequestrants, ascorbic acid for metals, enzyme/oxidizer for organics, or a no-drain acid process for light scale and dinginess. Lowest risk, no pop-up exposure, preserves plaster thickness.

Drain-and-acid-wash empties the pool and applies a controlled acid solution to remove the top discolored plaster layer. Restores appearance on a sound but stained or dingy surface. Removes plaster, carries hydrostatic pop-up risk, and is finite over a surface's life.

Replaster removes and recoats the interior with new plaster or aggregate finish. The durable answer for a surface that is worn through, delaminating, heavily etched, or has exhausted its acid-wash budget.

The matrix

Light metal or organic stain that lifts under a spot test, sound surface: choose no-drain treatment. Identify the metal and use the matched sequestrant or ascorbic process; no need to drain.

Calcium scale or general dinginess on an otherwise sound surface, stain does not lift in water: choose acid wash if the surface has remaining thickness and the water table allows safe draining; otherwise use a no-drain acid process.

Stain that resists all in-water treatment but the plaster is still substantial and smooth: choose acid wash. Confirm the surface can give up a layer without exposing aggregate.

Surface exposing aggregate, delaminating, spalling, or already acid-washed near its limit: choose replaster. Further acid-washing will breach the plaster and expose the substrate.

Heavy etch and roughness independent of color, or staining plus a failing surface: choose replaster. Acid wash cannot restore a worn surface and will accelerate failure.

High water table or no safe dewatering, surface needs more than spot work: choose no-drain options first; if the surface truly requires recoating, plan a hydrostatic-managed drain or replaster with proper relief.

Pre-decision tests

Run a localized stain-identification test: ascorbic acid (vitamin C) tablet held to a metal stain lifts iron quickly and copper more slowly; an alkali test (baking soda) helps separate organic from metal. Test water chemistry and saturation index, because a scaling or aggressive index will redeposit or re-etch after any treatment. Measure or estimate remaining plaster thickness and inspect for delamination by tapping for hollow spots. Assess the water table and whether the pool can be drained without a pop-up.

Never drain a plaster pool for acid wash without managing hydrostatic pressure. A pool drained over a high water table can float and crack the shell, a total loss. Open the hydrostatic relief valve, confirm the dewatering well, and follow the National Plasterers Council and local guidance on safe draining before committing to acid wash or replaster.
