Pool Automation Systems Reference
Why this matters
Pool automation is the fastest-growing segment of the pool equipment market. Customers now expect phone control of pump, heater, lights, salt cell, water features. Service techs who can diagnose + configure automation systems command premium rates. The two dominant platforms - Pentair IntelliCenter / ScreenLogic + Hayward OmniLogic - are the bulk of what techs encounter, plus aftermarket entrants like Jandy AquaLink.
Pentair platforms
ScreenLogic2 (older generation, still widely installed)
- Hardware: IntelliTouch or EasyTouch panel + ScreenLogic Protocol Adapter
- App: Pentair ScreenLogic
- Connection: wired Ethernet OR Pentair wireless adapter; cloud account via myPentair
- Common faults: protocol adapter loses connection (power-cycle the adapter); cloud account corrupted (delete + re-register)
- Status: receiving security patches but no new feature development
IntelliCenter (current platform, install since ~2018)
- Hardware: IntelliCenter panel (replaces IntelliTouch / EasyTouch)
- App: Pentair Home
- Connection: WiFi built-in + optional Ethernet
- Capabilities: full pool + spa control, salt cell (IntelliChlor), VS pumps, heater, lights (IntelliBrite or third-party), feature pumps
- Common faults: WiFi setup failures (router 2.4 GHz only on older firmware); firmware updates needed for new accessories

OmniLogic (current platform)
- Hardware: OmniLogic control panel (HLBASE)

- Capabilities: full pool + spa, AquaRite salt cell, VS pumps, heater, lights, chemistry automation (Sense + Dispense)
- Common faults: HLBASE board failures; WiFi 5 GHz routers need band steering disabled
ProLogic (legacy)
- Hardware: ProLogic P-4 / PS-8 / PS-16
- Older generation; controls Hayward pumps + heaters + lights + cell
- Limited app support; mostly local control with wall remotes
- Customers upgrading to OmniLogic gradually

- Hardware: AquaLink RS panel + iAquaLink WiFi adapter

- Capabilities: pool + spa, JEP-R pumps, Aquapure cell, JXi heater, LED lights
- Common faults: PCB power-cycles, communication errors at the RS-485 bus
- Status: maintained but Fluidra is consolidating to a unified platform (slower release cadence)
Universal automation concepts
RS-485 communication
Most pool automation uses RS-485 serial bus for component communication. Variable-speed pumps + salt cells + heaters all communicate over this two-wire bus.
- Common fault: bus wiring shorted, damaged, or back-EMF interference
- Diagnostic: measure DC voltage between A + B wires (typically 2 - 5V differential); check termination resistor at end of bus
- Most "automation not working" calls are RS-485 communication failures, not panel failures
Variable-speed pump control
VS pumps support direct on-board scheduling (run without automation) OR external control via RS-485 or 24V relay.
- IntelliFlo + TriStar VS support on-board OR automation-controlled
- When automation controls VS pump, on-board schedule is overridden
- Default fall-back: if RS-485 fails, pump runs last commanded speed
Salt cell output
Salt chlorine generator output is a percentage set at the panel; the cell runs while the pump runs at the configured percentage.
- IntelliChlor: 0 - 100% in 10% increments
- AquaRite: 0 - 100% in 5% increments
- Customer expectation: "more chlorine = turn up percentage" - but only works while pump is running. Many customer complaints are pump-not-running issues, not cell output issues.
Diagnostic workflow
- Identify the platform. Check panel face + model number. Photo to the customer's account record.
- Power-cycle the panel. 70% of "automation broken" calls resolve here.
- Check WiFi connection. Most panels show signal strength; <-65 dBm is problem territory.
- Check RS-485 bus. If pump or cell fault, walk the bus connections.
- Firmware. Update panel firmware if customer hasn't in 6+ months.
- App / cloud account. Customer may have changed their email; cloud account orphans.
The single highest-value automation upsell is moving a customer from manual chemistry to a SCHEDULED PUMP + automated salt cell percentage tuned by season. Customers who run their pump on the same schedule year-round overspend on electricity + chlorine. A seasonal program (8 hrs/day summer at 50 - 70% salt; 4 hrs/day winter at 20 - 30%) cuts annual operating cost by + the pool stays balanced. Tech configures it once; customer pays for the configuration; route stays cleaner.
What customers ask + how to answer
- "Which is best, Pentair or Hayward?" - Both are good current platforms. Match to existing equipment brand to minimize cross-brand compatibility issues.
- "Why won't my Alexa control the pool?" - Most pool platforms do NOT have native Alexa / Google integration. iAquaLink + IntelliCenter have limited integrations; OmniLogic has stronger smart-home APIs as of 2024.
- "Why is my pool app slow?" - Cloud service latency, app version, OR poor WiFi at equipment pad. Hardwired Ethernet to panel solves most.
