Pool Equipotential Bonding Grid Inspection

Why this matters

The equipotential bonding grid is the most important electrical safety system around a pool - it ties together all metallic components within 5 feet of the pool to a common conductor so that no voltage difference can exist between two points a swimmer could touch. Failures in the bonding grid are the leading cause of electrocution incidents at residential pools. The CPSC documents these incidents annually, and stray-voltage drowning has been recognized as a distinct mechanism. NEC 680 has progressively tightened the requirements; older pools (pre-2008) often have bonding installations that wouldn't meet current code.

This is a reference for the pool service company - bonding work itself is performed by a licensed electrician, but the service company is often the first to notice when something has been disturbed.

What the bonding grid does

In a swimming pool, electrical current can be present in the water or surrounding structures from:

  • Stray voltage from utility lines or neighbor's electrical systems
  • Equipment ground faults
  • Lightning surges
  • Static charge buildup

If two parts of the pool environment have different voltages, a person touching both completes the circuit and current flows through them. The bonding grid prevents this by tying every metallic component to the same potential - so even if voltage exists in the system, it exists equally everywhere a swimmer can touch.

The bonding grid is NOT the same as grounding. Grounding connects equipment to earth (for fault current to clear breakers). Bonding equalizes voltage between metallic objects (so no voltage difference exists). Both are required; they serve different purposes.

NEC 680.26 requirements (summary)

Components that must be bonded together:

  1. Pool shell reinforcing steel - the rebar in the pool walls and floor
  2. Pool deck reinforcing steel - within 3 feet of the pool perimeter, all rebar in the deck
  3. Pool water itself - via an intentional water bond (8 sq in of metal surface, NEC 680.26(C))
  4. All metallic pool fittings - handrails, ladders, diving boards, slides, lifeguard chairs
  5. All electrical equipment - pump, heater, motor housings, light niches
  6. Metal raceways and piping - that's part of the pool system
  7. Fixed metal parts within 5 feet - fencing, screens, deck boxes

All connections must be made with #8 AWG copper minimum, attached with listed pressure connectors. Connections are typically made at the equipment pad and at locations around the pool.

How the grid is installed (during pool construction)

A licensed electrician runs #8 AWG bare copper wire around the perimeter of the pool, bonding to:

  1. Rebar in the pool shell (during shell construction)
  2. Rebar in the deck (during deck pour)
  3. Every metallic fitting
  4. Water bond (one of several methods - most common is a bonding lug on a metal pool light niche or a separate metallic water bond)
  5. All equipment at the pad (pump, heater, control box)

The grid forms a single, continuous, electrically-connected mesh. Any disconnection breaks the bond.

What a pool service tech should watch for

The pool service tech is often the first person to notice bonding issues. Red flags during regular service:

At the equipment pad:

  • Bonding wire (#8 bare copper) connections that look corroded, broken, or disconnected
  • Bonding lug on the motor housing that's loose or missing
  • Pump replacement where the bonding wire was disconnected and not reconnected
  • Equipment pad with no visible bonding wire at all (older installs may have inadequate bonding)

At the pool:

  • Metal ladder, handrail, or diving board with no visible bonding wire connection
  • New metal fence or screen within 5 feet of the pool that isn't bonded
  • Water bond (separate fitting) that's been removed or replaced without re-bonding
  • Pool light niche replacement that didn't include re-bonding

Around the deck:

  • Visible bare copper bonding wire that's been damaged (cut by a landscaper, dug up during another project)
  • New metallic deck box or post that wasn't included in the original bond

When to call in the electrician

Any of the above findings should result in a referral to a licensed electrician familiar with pools and NEC 680. The service tech does NOT make bonding repairs - both because the work requires a licensed electrician in most jurisdictions, and because the verification (continuity testing, voltage measurements) requires specific equipment.

A relationship with a pool-experienced electrician makes referrals easier. The customer gets a competent professional; the pool service company isn't taking on electrical liability beyond their license.

Customer education

When you observe bonding issues, the customer needs to understand:

  1. "This is an electrical safety concern. The pool's bonding system equalizes voltage between things people might touch - without it, stray voltage could harm a swimmer"
  2. "I'm not licensed to repair this; I recommend [electrician name]"
  3. "This isn't optional - it's a code requirement and a life-safety issue"
  4. "Don't allow swimming in the pool until this is repaired"

Some customers push back on the cost. Be firm; this is the one area where the customer's reluctance to spend should not change the recommendation.

Common modifications that disturb bonding

These are the recurring causes of bonding-grid failures:

  • Pump replacement - electrician removes the bonding wire from the old pump to remove it, forgets to re-attach to the new pump
  • Heater replacement - same as pump
  • Light niche replacement - bonding lug on the niche fitting often goes unreplaced
  • New metal fence installed within 5 feet - landscaper doesn't know the bonding requirement
  • Pool deck repair - deck removal exposes the deck rebar bond and any work needs to re-bond
  • Pool plumbing repair (concrete cut for pipe work) - exposed rebar may need re-bonding
  • Saltwater conversion - new salt cell may not be bonded
  • Underwater LED light retrofit - new fixture may need bonding

A bonding-aware electrician handles each correctly. A general contractor or untrained pool tech often misses it.

Inspection at major service intervals

The pool service tech can perform a visual bonding inspection annually:

  1. Walk the equipment pad
  2. Verify all major equipment has visible bonding wire connections
  3. Verify connections appear tight and uncorroded
  4. Walk the pool perimeter
  5. Verify every metallic fitting has a visible bonding connection
  6. Document with photos
  7. Note any concerns for follow-up by an electrician
