Cloudy Water Clears Overnight But Returns by Afternoon Decision Tree
Why this matters
A pool that looks clear at the morning visit but clouds up every afternoon is showing a daytime-driven cycle, and that timing is the diagnostic clue most techs ignore. The afternoon clouding points to a sun-and-heat-driven process: precipitation as pH and temperature peak in the day, an early algae bloom that photosynthesizes under sun, or chlorine demand outrunning the generator during peak bather and UV load. Treating it as a generic cloudy-water call (dump clarifier, run the filter) wastes product and never breaks the cycle because the cause re-triggers each afternoon. This tree uses the daily timing to separate calcium/saturation precipitation, sunlight-driven algae, and demand-outrunning-supply.
Symptom presentation
Morning water is clear or only slightly hazy. By early afternoon the water turns cloudy or develops a milky or faint-green cast, then settles and clears overnight while the pool is cool and dark. The cycle repeats daily. The pool may have a salt chlorinator sized at the edge of demand, high calcium or high pH, or warm shallow water that heats fast in the sun.
Quick checks
- Test pH, calcium hardness, and temperature at the cloudy afternoon time, not the clear morning. Calculate the saturation index. A high index in the warm afternoon precipitates calcium that redissolves as the water cools overnight.
- Test free chlorine in the afternoon. A FC that is fine in the morning but near zero by afternoon means demand is outrunning supply during the sun's peak.
- Note the water color. Milky white leans calcium/precipitation; green-tinged leans algae; gray can be dead algae or fine debris.
- Check filter pressure and turnover. Undersized or short filtration leaves daytime-generated particles suspended.
- Inspect for slick walls or steps, an early algae sign that worsens under afternoon sun.
Isolation tree
Step 1: Run the saturation index at the afternoon peak. If pH and calcium drive the index high when the water is warmest, the daytime cloud is calcium precipitation: scale forms as solubility drops in warm high-pH water and redissolves overnight. Move to balance correction.
Step 2: If the index is fine but FC craters by afternoon, the chlorinator or chlorine residual cannot keep up with peak UV and bather demand. The brief afternoon FC sag lets a microbloom flare and cloud the water, then overnight chlorination catches up. Confirm by comparing morning and afternoon FC against the CYA-adjusted minimum.
Step 3: If FC holds and the index is fine, look directly for algae. Brush a wall section in the afternoon and watch for a dust cloud that resists clearing. Slick surfaces plus a green afternoon tint confirm a sun-active bloom.
Step 4: If chemistry is clean and no algae is found, the cause is filtration: daytime activity (sun-warmed convection, swimmers, wind-blown fines) suspends particles the filter is not turning over fast enough to capture before they accumulate visibly by afternoon. Check turnover hours and filter condition.
Step 5: If none fit, suspect a localized source: a malfunctioning in-floor cleaner stirring settled debris each afternoon cycle, or a heater scaling and shedding calcium when it fires on the afternoon schedule.
Confirming diagnosis
Calcium precipitation confirms when correcting pH and lowering the saturation index stops the afternoon cloud while overnight clearing also stops (because nothing precipitates to redissolve). Demand-outrunning-supply confirms when raising the FC residual or chlorinator output keeps afternoon FC above the minimum and the cloud stops. Algae confirms when an algaecide or shock plus phosphate control clears the water and it stays clear through the next afternoon. Filtration confirms when extending turnover or cleaning the filter clears the daily haze.
Remediation
For calcium precipitation: lower pH to 7.4 to 7.6, bring TA into range, and if calcium hardness is excessive (over 600 ppm), plan a partial drain or RO water service. Re-run the index. For demand: raise the FC target to the upper CYA-adjusted band and, on salt pools, increase chlorinator output or runtime so the residual rides through the afternoon peak. For algae: shock to breakpoint, brush thoroughly, control phosphates, and verify FC holds. For filtration: extend pump runtime to achieve at least one full turnover during daylight, clean or upgrade the filter, and confirm flow.
Always test at the cloudy time, not the clear time, and log both readings so the cycle is documented.
