Pool Equipment Sizing Reference

Overview

Pool equipment sizing affects every aspect of pool operation - pump matched to filter, filter sized for pool volume, heater matched to climate + use pattern. Mismatched equipment runs inefficiently, fails early, or doesn't deliver what the customer expects. This reference is the quick-quote sizing guide.

Reference Table - Pump Sizing

Pool gallons + Turnover time (8 - 10 hours typical residential):

Required flow rate = Pool gallons ÷ Turnover hours ÷ 60

Match pump HP to required GPM at the system's head pressure:

  • 1 HP residential pump: ~50 GPM at 40 ft head
  • 1.5 HP residential pump: ~65 GPM at 40 ft head
  • 2 HP residential pump: ~80 GPM at 40 ft head

For variable-speed pumps, use the manufacturer's flow curves rather than HP.

Reference Table - Filter Sizing

Match filter capacity to pump output. Filter undersizing causes premature clogging + high backwash frequency.

Sand filters:

Tank size (typically 24" - 30" diameter for residential). Sand volume + GPM rating per manufacturer.

DE filters:

Heat-up time depends on temperature rise + climate. Standard residential heaters:

Heat pumps (electric):

  • More efficient for sustained temperature maintenance
  • Slower heat-up than gas
  • Recommended ambient air temp 50°F+ for effective operation

Solar heating:

  • Surface area requirement: 60 - 80 % of pool surface area
  • Best return on investment in sunny climates with daily use

Specifications - System Pressure (Head)

Head pressure is the cumulative resistance the pump must overcome:

  • Vertical lift: 1 ft = 1 ft head
  • Each 100 ft of pipe: 1 - 2 ft head
  • Each 90° elbow: 2.5 ft head
  • Each 45° elbow: 1.5 ft head
  • Each fitting + valve: 1 - 2 ft head
  • Filter (clean): 5 - 10 ft head
  • Filter (dirty): 15 - 20 ft head
  • Heater: 3 - 5 ft head

Total residential system head: 30 - 60 ft typical.

Notes

  • Oversized pumps waste energy. Modern variable-speed pumps run at LOWER speeds for normal turnover; high speeds only for spa modes or features. A right-sized variable-speed pump uses 30 - 70 % less energy than a single-speed pump.
  • DOE energy regulations: pumps > 0.5 HP require variable-speed in new installs in most jurisdictions (federal mandate since 2021). Verify before quoting single-speed.
  • Filter element type: cartridge filters need replacement every 2 - 3 years. Sand needs replacement every 5 - 7 years. DE grids last 10+ years if properly maintained.
  • Heater fuel choice: natural gas cheaper to operate where available; propane more expensive but doesn't require gas line. Electric heat pumps lowest operating cost for moderate climates.

Equipment sizing is a quoting opportunity. The customer with the right-sized pump uses 50 %+ less electricity than the wrong-sized one - measurable on their utility bill. When you find an oversized pump on a service call, quote a variable-speed replacement; payback is typically 18 - 36 months on the electricity savings alone.
