Pool Heater Cycles On Off Only at Low Pump Speed Decision Tree
Why this matters
A gas pool heater that fires and holds steady at high pump speed but short-cycles or never stays lit at the low speed a variable-speed pump runs all day is a flow problem the heater is correctly protecting against, not a heater defect. The flow or pressure switch is opening because the water moving through the exchanger has dropped below the minimum the heater needs to carry away the burner's heat. Force the heater to run dry of flow and you crack the heat exchanger or trip the high-limit repeatedly. The fix is almost always restoring flow at the heat-call speed, not replacing the flow switch. This tree isolates whether the low-flow trip is a pump-speed setting, a dirty filter, a closed valve, a bypass issue, or a genuinely failing switch.
Symptom presentation
Heater lights and holds when the pump runs at full or high speed. At the lower speed the VSP runs during scheduled heating or off-peak hours, the heater fires, runs a short time, then drops out, often displaying a flow or pressure fault and re-attempting. Water temperature never reaches setpoint on the low schedule. Bumping the pump to high makes the problem disappear.
Quick checks
- Read the heater's fault display. A flow-switch or pressure-switch fault (Pentair "no flow"/E05, Raypak "flow"/"pressure switch", Jandy "service heater"/flow) confirms the protection circuit is opening.
- Check filter pressure. A loaded cartridge or DE grid at low speed may not pass enough flow even though it is acceptable at high speed.
- Check the pump RPM at the heat-call schedule. Many VSPs are set too low (1200 to 1750 RPM) for the heater's minimum flow.
- Verify any heater bypass valve or three-way valve position. A partly closed valve or a bypass set for high-flow trips the switch at low flow.
- Inspect the heat exchanger inlet for scale or debris restricting flow.
Isolation tree
Step 1: Raise the pump to high speed and confirm the heater holds. This proves the protection circuit is doing its job and the issue is flow at low speed. If the heater short-cycles even at high speed, this is a different fault (gas, ignition, high-limit) and leaves this tree.
Step 2: At the low heat-call speed, read the filter pressure and compare to the clean-filter baseline. A pressure 8 to 10 psi over clean baseline means the filter is restricting flow. Clean or backwash and retest at the same low speed.
Step 3: If the filter is clean, walk the plumbing path. Confirm the heater isolation valves are fully open and any bypass valve is set so flow goes through, not around, the exchanger at this speed. Reposition and retest.
Step 4: If valves and filter are correct, raise the VSP heat-call speed in 250 RPM steps until the flow/pressure fault clears and the heater holds. The speed that holds is the minimum the heater needs; most gas heaters want 25 to 40 GPM, which often means 2200 to 2800 RPM depending on plumbing size and head.
Step 5: If the heater faults even at a speed that visibly produces strong flow, suspect the switch itself or its sensing line. A pressure switch with a clogged sensing port or a flow switch with a bent paddle or failing reed reads low flow falsely. Jumper-test the switch per the OEM diagnostic only to confirm, then restore it.
Confirming diagnosis
A pump-speed cause confirms when raising the heat-call RPM holds the heater and the customer's automation schedule is adjusted to run that speed during heating. A filter-restriction cause confirms when cleaning the filter lets the original low speed hold. A valve cause confirms when correcting valve position restores flow. A failing switch confirms when flow is demonstrably adequate (verified GPM or strong return flow) yet the switch still opens, and a known-good replacement switch holds.
Do not jumper out a heater flow or pressure switch as a permanent repair. That switch is the only protection preventing the burner from firing into a heat exchanger with no water moving through it. A bypassed switch leads to a cracked exchanger, scalding, or in a gas appliance a serious overheat condition.
Remediation
For low pump speed: program the automation so the heater's heat-call schedule commands a pump speed that meets minimum flow, then return to low speed when the heat call ends. Pentair, Jandy, and Hayward automation all support a heater-linked speed. For a restricting filter: clean cartridges, bump DE, or backwash sand, then confirm at the operating speed. For valves: correct positions and label them. For a failing switch: replace with the OEM part and clear any scale at the inlet that may have shortened its life.
Document the minimum RPM that holds the heater so the next tech does not chase a phantom fault.
