Pebble vs Quartz vs Plaster Interior Finish Decision Matrix

Why this matters

When a gunite or shotcrete pool needs a new interior, the finish choice locks in a decade or more of texture, stain behavior, chemistry sensitivity, and how the surface will age on the route. Recommend the wrong finish and you inherit recurring complaints: a rough pebble that scrapes feet, a white plaster that mottles and spot-etches, or a quartz that the customer expected to feel like glass. The three families (traditional white/colored plaster, quartz-aggregate plaster, and exposed-pebble) trade durability against feel, cost, and chemistry tolerance. A clear-eyed matrix lets you match the surface to the customer's water habits, climate, and how disciplined their chemistry maintenance realistically is.

The options

  • Traditional plaster (marcite): white portland-cement plaster, sometimes pigmented. Smoothest underfoot, lowest material cost, shortest typical service life, and the most sensitive to chemistry. Prone to etching, scaling, mottling, and staining when balance drifts.
  • Quartz-aggregate plaster: a cement matrix loaded with hard quartz granules (and often a colored pigment or ceramic-coated quartz). Mid-range cost, longer service life than marcite, more stain and etch resistance because the quartz is far harder than cement, with a slightly textured but still comfortable feel.
  • Exposed-pebble finish: small natural pebbles in a cement matrix, troweled and then washed/polished to expose the stone. Longest typical service life, most durable and stain-resistant of the three, broadest color range and a high-end look, at the highest material and labor cost. Texture ranges from coarse (large pebble) to near-smooth (polished mini-pebble).

When plaster wins

Choose traditional plaster when first cost is the dominant constraint, the customer wants the smoothest possible feel, and the owner (or your route) will actually hold tight water balance: a Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) near zero, calcium hardness in the appropriate band (roughly 200 to 400 ppm for a plaster pool), total alkalinity in range, and pH kept off the low end where it goes aggressive and etches. Plaster also makes sense for a short-horizon property (a flip, a rental being sold) where maximum service life is not the goal. It is the wrong call for owners who let chemistry swing, fill from aggressive (low-calcium, low-pH) source water, or want a colored finish to stay uniform, because dark and pigmented plaster mottles, shows trowel marks, and develops a chalky white film readily when the LSI sits even slightly negative. Plaster is also the least forgiving of a sloppy startup; aggressive early water or uneven brushing in the first weeks bakes in spotting and roughness that no later chemistry fixes.

When quartz wins

Choose quartz when the customer wants meaningfully better durability and stain resistance than marcite without paying full pebble cost, and is comfortable with a light texture. It is the strong default middle pick: the hard quartz aggregate resists etching and the typical chemistry-driven spot wear that plagues plain plaster, color holds better than pigmented marcite, and the feel stays comfortable for bare feet and play areas. Quartz is a good match for families, sun-belt pools with year-round use, and owners with average (not perfect) chemistry discipline who still want a finish that forgives a few balance excursions.

When pebble wins

Choose pebble when the customer prioritizes longevity, a premium appearance, and maximum stain/etch resistance, and accepts the texture trade and higher cost. Large-pebble finishes give the most durable, most natural look but are rough underfoot, so steer barefoot-heavy or kid-heavy pools toward polished mini-pebble, which keeps most of the durability with a smoother feel. Pebble is also the best choice where the climate or water chemistry is hard on surfaces (high-evaporation desert pools with scaling tendency, or aggressive fill water), because the exposed stone is far less reactive than a cement-rich surface. It is the wrong call only when budget is tight or the owner specifically wants glass-smooth feel.

Field decision flow

  1. Is first cost the hard constraint and the property short-horizon? If yes, traditional plaster, with a frank note that service life and stain resistance are the lowest of the three.
  2. Does the owner keep tight, balanced chemistry and want the smoothest feel? Plaster is acceptable; if there is any doubt about chemistry discipline, step up to quartz.
  3. Does the customer want better durability, color retention, and stain resistance at a moderate cost, with average maintenance habits? Quartz, the safe default.
  4. Does the customer want maximum longevity, a premium look, and the best stain/etch resistance, and will they accept texture and cost? Pebble. Recommend polished mini-pebble for barefoot comfort, large pebble for the most natural appearance.
  5. Regardless of finish, schedule the new-surface startup correctly: a managed startup (traditional fill-and-brush, or an acid/no-drain startup per the applicator) drives early surface quality. Document the startup chemistry handoff in the service record.

Match the finish to realistic maintenance behavior, not to the customer's stated intentions. A finish that tolerates the chemistry the pool will actually get beats a smoother finish that demands discipline the owner will not sustain. As a route-economics note, the durable finishes (quartz, pebble) reduce the spot-etch and stain complaints that drive callbacks and the early replaster cycle, so the higher up-front cost often buys quieter long-term service even though it does not change the weekly visit. When in doubt between two finishes, the one that fails more gracefully under neglected chemistry is the safer recommendation.
