Pool Light Niche Water vs Conduit Leak Decision Tree

Why this matters

Water inside a pool-light niche or junction box is either a normal hydrostatic seep (acceptable per design) or a failed seal (requires repair). Misjudging this gets either a callback when the light fixture corrodes out in six months, or an unnecessary tear-out and quote on a niche that was fine. More importantly, water plus a failing fixture plus a bonded grid creates the conditions for an electric-shock incident. The decision tree below isolates the source - light fixture, niche pot, conduit, junction box, or bonding - in a defined order, with explicit safety gates so the tech isn't standing in the water when the cause is shock-current driven.

Symptom presentation

Tech is asked to look at a pool light because the bulb failed, GFCI trips, or the light flickers. On inspection, the niche pot or the deck-box junction is wet. Sometimes water is visible inside the lens. Sometimes the GFCI on the lighting circuit will not reset. Sometimes the customer reports tingling at the handrail or ladder - this is a stop-work signal.

Quick checks before touching anything

  1. De-energize the lighting circuit at the breaker. Test the niche with a non-contact voltage detector before entering the water.
  2. Verify GFCI protection on the lighting circuit per NEC 680.23. A 120 V incandescent or LED pool light must be on a GFCI. The GFCI is the primary shock-prevention device; if it has been bypassed or replaced with a non-GFCI device, do not proceed until corrected.
  3. Test the bonding grid continuity with a clamp ohmmeter from the equipotential bonding ring to the niche shell. Resistance should be near zero.
  4. Look at the deck-junction box. A box that is below grade, full of water, with a missing or rusted lid is a separate finding from a wet niche.
  5. Confirm the lamp type and voltage. 12 V transformer-fed niches and 120 V direct-fed niches have different failure modes.

If steps 1 through 3 fail, stop and quote the electrical correction. Do not chase a niche leak on a system without functioning GFCI and bonding.

Isolation tree

Step 1: Pull the lens-and-gasket assembly and look at the inside of the niche pot. A dry niche with water only inside the lens means a failed lens gasket; replace gasket and lamp. A wet niche behind the fixture means water is entering past the niche threads or through the conduit.

Step 2: Inspect the conduit termination at the back of the niche. NEC 680.23(B)(2) requires brass or plastic conduit between the niche and the deck box. A steel conduit or a brass conduit corroded at the niche entry is the most common path for water from the deck-box side into the niche.

Step 3: Open the deck junction box. Water in the deck box, with the conduit terminating below the water line of the box, lets water siphon between box and niche. The deck box must be set above the water level per NEC 680.24. If the box is below the water line, the install is non-compliant and the leak is structural.

Step 4: Inspect the niche threads and the surrounding gunite or vinyl shell. A niche shell separating from the wall ring leaks water into the conduit and on into the deck box. A niche pot that is bulging, cracked, or missing its rear gasket where the conduit threads in requires fixture pull and gasket service.

Step 5: For vinyl pools, inspect the liner gasket behind the niche face ring. A failed liner gasket leaks water both into the niche cavity and behind the liner, which propagates into the deck.

Confirming diagnosis

Conduit leak confirms when air pressure (3 to 5 PSI for 10 minutes) on the conduit between deck box and niche decays. Niche-shell leak confirms when dye in the niche tracks behind the wall and not back through the conduit. Deck-box water confirms by sight when the box has standing water and the conduit run drops below the water surface of the pool. Lens-gasket leak confirms when the new gasket holds with no other water source visible.

Remediation

For lens-gasket failure: replace the OEM gasket (Pentair, Hayward, or Jandy), torque per the manual, water-pressure-test the niche by filling and observing the lens after 1 hour.

For conduit corrosion or wrong conduit material: re-pull the wet niche cord through new conduit of brass or PVC per NEC 680.23. Re-seal the niche threads with the manufacturer's specified sealant.

For deck box below water line: raise the box per NEC 680.24 above the water level. This is structural and requires deck work; quote it as such.

For niche shell separation in plaster: hydraulic-cement repair around the niche perimeter, with the pool drained to below niche level for the cure. For vinyl, replace the liner gasket and reinstall the face ring with new fasteners. Fiberglass shells with niche-shell leaks are an OEM warranty path.

For LED retrofits: a converted LED that runs cooler will not boil out residual water in the niche the way an incandescent did. Treat any visible water in a LED-retrofitted niche as a leak, not as condensation.

Never service a pool light with the breaker on or with people in the water. Per NEC 680.7 and OSHA general duty clause, the wet-niche shock risk is taken as serious until each safety device (GFCI, bonding) is confirmed in place and functional.
