Pool Light Replacement Underwater Procedure

Why this matters

Pool light replacement is one of the few service tasks that crosses pool chemistry, low voltage electrical, NEC compliance, and water safety in a single call. Done wrong, it kills people. Lightning is not the main risk; the main risk is a failed bonding grid or a missed GFCI test that energizes the pool water. This is the procedure to do the work without dropping the pool, which is the safer and faster method for the vast majority of residential niches.

Pre work safety verification (mandatory, every job)

Before any tool goes near the water:

  1. Identify the pool light circuit at the main panel. Turn it OFF and lock out / tag out. A simple piece of red tape with your name and the date is the field minimum; a real LOTO padlock is the standard for any job over 30 minutes.
  2. Verify dead at the light using a non contact voltage tester held against the niche faceplate from the deck, then at the junction box (J box) on the deck after opening it. Test the tester against a known live circuit first to confirm it works.
  3. Test the GFCI breaker by pushing the test button. It should trip. Reset and re trip with the integrated tester on your meter. If the GFCI does not trip on test, it is not protecting the pool. STOP. Diagnose and replace the GFCI before touching the niche. Per NEC 680.23, all pool lights operating at over the low voltage contact limit (15 V AC for wet locations) must be GFCI protected.
  4. Inspect the bonding grid. The deck bonding lug should be present, the pool ladder anchor sockets should show #8 solid copper bonding wire continuity. Per NEC 680.26, the equipotential bonding grid is what prevents a voltage gradient between the swimmer and the deck. If bonding is missing or corroded, do not energize the new light until bonding is restored.

Tools and materials

  • New fixture matching the existing niche brand (Pentair Amerlite, Hayward Astrolite, Pentair IntelliBrite, Hayward ColorLogic, Jandy WaterColors, etc.) or a verified retrofit LED.
  • Cord pulling string (already routed during fixture install) or fish tape.
  • Marine grade silicone sealant or manufacturer specified niche sealant (typically Permatex or 3M 5200 marine).
  • New niche gasket (always replaces, never reuse).
  • Stainless steel face screws (replace any corroded).
  • 5/16 nut driver or socket for face screws.
  • Insulated electrical tape.
  • Wire nuts rated for wet location (Buchanan B Caps with sealant, or 3M DBR / Y direct bury connectors).
  • GFCI tester / multimeter.
  • Towel and dry tarp for the deck working surface.

Replacement procedure (without draining)

  1. Confirm power off and tested dead. State out loud "power is off, tested dead at the niche". Make it a habit.
  2. Remove the two stainless screws from the light face ring (typically one at 12 o clock top, one at 6 o clock bottom). Some older niches use a single screw at the top.
  3. The fixture is held in the niche by gravity and by the cord coil behind it. Pull the fixture straight out toward you. The cord uncoils from behind the niche as you pull. There is typically 6 to 12 ft of cord coiled in the niche.
  4. Set the fixture on a dry towel on the deck. Do NOT let the cord drop back into the niche; if it falls in, recovering it without draining is a nightmare.
  5. Open the J box on the deck (typically located at least 4 ft horizontally from the pool inside wall per NEC 680.24, or above the maximum water level by 4 inches with sealed conduit per the same code).
  6. Inside the J box, disconnect the fixture cord from the supply wires. Tape the supply wires individually with electrical tape.
  7. Tie the cord pulling string to the existing fixture cord at the J box end. Use a small electricians knot, then tape over it smoothly so the joint passes through the conduit without snagging.
  8. Pull the old fixture toward the niche from the pool side. As the cord disappears into the conduit, the string follows. Stop when the string is just into the J box; tape its loose end to the conduit body so you don't lose it.
  9. Tie the new fixture's cord to the pulling string (same electricians knot, smoothly taped).
  10. From the J box side, pull the string. The new cord follows through the conduit and back to the J box.
  11. At the J box: strip the new cord conductors and the supply wires. Use the wet rated wire nut or direct bury connector with sealant per the connector instructions. Per NEC 680.23, the green grounding conductor in the fixture cord must connect to the equipment grounding conductor and to the bonding terminal in the J box.
  12. Coil approximately 6 to 8 ft of fixture cord into the niche behind the fixture body. The coil is there so the fixture can be pulled out for future lamp replacement without disconnecting at the J box.
  13. Install the new gasket (always new, never reuse the old one).
  14. Position the fixture into the niche, aligned with the screw holes. Drive the stainless screws snug, do not over torque. A torque past gasket compression cracks the fixture lens housing.

Restoring power and verifying

  1. Close the J box.
  2. Re energize the breaker. Test GFCI: push test, breaker trips. Reset.
  3. Turn the pool light on. Verify operation.
  4. With the light on, walk the deck with a non contact voltage tester. Sweep the bonding grid (ladder anchors, deck drains, deck rebar where exposed at expansion joints). Should read zero. Any reading indicates a bonding problem requiring immediate disconnect and diagnosis.
  5. If converting to LED from an incandescent, verify the transformer (for low voltage fixtures) is sized correctly. LED loads are much lower than incandescent; an undersized transformer is now oversized, no issue. Check that the transformer is rated for the LED load and that the GFCI on the line side is rated for the low voltage transformer feed.

LED retrofit considerations

Retrofitting a Pentair Amerlite niche with a Pentair IntelliBrite LED is plug compatible at the niche but requires verifying:

  • Existing transformer is 12 V or 120 V matched to new fixture.
  • Existing wire gauge is adequate. A 1.5 amp LED on a 60 ft run from the J box to the panel is fine on 14 AWG. A 7 amp incandescent fixture being replaced means the wiring is over sized for the LED, which is fine.
  • Color changing LEDs require a controller. Without the controller, the LED may default to white or cycle continuously. Pentair, Hayward, and Jandy each use a different switching protocol (Pentair counts power cycles, Hayward uses ColorLogic switching, Jandy uses Aqualink commands).
