Pump Runs but No Suction After Valve Rebuild Decision Tree

Why this matters

You just rebuilt or replaced a suction-side valve (a multiport, a diverter, or a 2- or 3-way valve on the skimmer/main-drain manifold), the pump powers on and spins, but you get little or no suction. Nothing pulls through, the basket will not stay full, or the gauge sits near zero. Because the symptom appeared right after the valve work, the rebuild is the prime suspect, but the same no-suction picture has several other causes, and chasing the wrong one wastes a return trip. This tree isolates whether the problem is in the valve you just touched, an air leak the rebuild introduced, a porting/diverter mistake, or a coincidental unrelated cause.

A pump that runs without suction is also running without cooling water flow. Left spinning dry, the seal and the volute take heat damage quickly, so the diagnosis needs to be fast and the pump should not be left running blind while you think.

Symptom presentation

  • Motor runs at normal speed and sound, but the strainer basket does not fill or will not stay full of water.
  • Filter pressure gauge reads at or near zero, or far below normal.
  • The pump may have primed at install but lost prime, or it may have never primed after the valve work.
  • Possible air bubbles returning to the pool, or churning/foaming visible in a clear pump lid.

Quick checks

Do these before opening anything:

  • Confirm the valve is positioned correctly. A diverter rebuilt or reinstalled with the diverter flap or handle indexed wrong can close off the suction line entirely. Cycle the handle through its positions and watch for suction to appear.
  • Check the strainer lid and o-ring. If the lid was opened during the valve job, a pinched, dry, or unseated lid o-ring is the single most common air leak. Lubricate and reseat.
  • Verify water level. Water below the skimmer mouth pulls air; rule out a low pool before blaming the valve.
  • Confirm the pump is actually primed. Fill the strainer pot per the priming procedure and see whether suction takes hold at all.

Start: Does the pump prime and hold suction when you manually fill the strainer pot and run it?

  • Yes, it primes and holds once filled. The pump and impeller are fine; the problem is air ingress or a starvation point on the suction side that prevented self-priming. Go to the air-leak branch.

  • No, it will not hold even when filled (water disappears, suction fades). Go to: Does cycling the rebuilt valve change anything?

    • Cycling the valve restores or changes suction. The valve porting/diverter is the cause. A rebuilt diverter can be reassembled with the flap backward, the o-ring rolled, or the handle mis-indexed so it does not fully open the intended port. Recheck the diverter orientation against the manufacturer's keying and the line markings. Confirm the handle stops correspond to fully open/closed positions.

    • Cycling the valve does nothing. Go to: Is the suction blocked or is it pulling air?

      • Blocked (no air, just no flow): Suspect a closed or partially seated valve internal, debris dislodged during the rebuild now lodged in the seat, or a closed line you forgot to reopen. Inspect the valve internals and the manifold.
      • Pulling air (bubbles, foaming, basket drains): Go to the air-leak branch; the rebuild likely introduced a leak at a union, seal, or fitting.

Air-leak branch: where is air entering on the suction side?

Work from the pump back toward the pool, since the rebuild is closest to the pump:

  • Valve body and unions you just touched. A union o-ring not seated, a body half not torqued evenly, or a missing/rolled internal seal from the rebuild. This is the highest-probability spot. Re-torque and reseat.
  • Threaded fittings disturbed during the job. Any joint loosened and not properly resealed pulls air under vacuum even if it does not drip under pressure.
  • Strainer lid o-ring (already checked, but re-verify under running vacuum).
  • Drain plugs / pressure-test ports opened during service and not fully resealed.

Confirm an air leak with a vacuum-side check: a small amount of water or shaving cream wiped over a suspect joint will get pulled in and visibly dimple when the leak is there.

Confirming the diagnosis

  • If reseating the valve unions/seals restores prime and the basket stays full, the rebuild introduced the air leak. Confirmed.
  • If correcting diverter orientation restores suction, the valve was ported/indexed wrong. Confirmed.
  • If neither valve-related fix helps and the cause traces upstream (low water, skimmer weir, a clog before the valve), the timing was coincidental and the valve is not at fault.

Remediation

  • Reseat or replace any disturbed o-ring; lubricate suction-side o-rings with the manufacturer-approved silicone lubricant, not petroleum.
  • Re-torque valve body halves evenly per the manufacturer's pattern; over-torquing one side can warp the seal.
  • Reindex the diverter to the correct keyed position and verify full open/close at the handle stops.
  • Re-prime per the standard procedure and run only after suction is confirmed; do not run dry.
  • Verify final filter pressure returns to the established baseline for that system.
