Saltwater Chlorine Generator Conversion
Why this matters
Saltwater conversion is one of the highest-converting upsells in pool service. Customers want lower-maintenance chemistry + softer water-feel. The conversion job runs installed + adds a recurring service relationship. Done wrong, the saltwater pool corrodes equipment + customers blame the contractor. Done right, it's the easiest premium-margin sale on the route.

Confirm the pool is a candidate before quoting:
Surface materials
- Plaster / pebble: compatible
- Quartz: compatible
- Fiberglass: compatible
- Vinyl liner: compatible BUT use only marine-grade fittings; some old vinyl liners have issues
- Natural stone coping (limestone, travertine): CAN BE damaged by salt + chlorinated saltwater over time; warn customer or seal coping
- Concrete coping: typically fine
Existing equipment compatibility
- Pump: any modern pump compatible
- Filter: any compatible (cartridge / DE / sand)
- Heater: copper heat exchangers can corrode in salt; cupro-nickel or titanium exchangers are saltwater-safe. Check heater model.
- Light niches: stainless steel is OK; cast brass or older galvanized fittings are NOT
- Handrails / ladders: stainless 316 OK; chrome over brass - questionable
- Diving board hardware: inspect; replace with stainless if needed
Electrical
- Salt cell needs a dedicated 120V or 240V circuit (varies by cell model)
- Confirm panel capacity OR plan sub-panel install with customer
If any incompatible material is present, document it + brief the customer in writing before the sale. Repeat: in writing.

Procedure
Step 1: Drain + balance baseline chemistry
- Bring pool to standard balance BEFORE adding salt:
- pH 7.4 - 7.6
- Total alkalinity 80 - 120 ppm
- Calcium hardness 200 - 400 ppm
- Chlorine 1 - 3 ppm
- Document baseline + photograph readings
Step 2: Cell installation (plumbing)
- Identify location: AFTER filter + heater, last component before return line
- Cut plumbing per cell flow direction (arrow on cell body)
- Install unions on both sides for service access
- Tee in flow switch if not integrated (most modern cells include flow switch)
- Test for leaks before powering up
Step 3: Cell installation (electrical)
- Mount power supply per manufacturer (typically wall-mount near equipment)
- Connect 120V or 240V per cell spec (most residential 120V, 60Hz)
- Run low-voltage cell cable per spec - DO NOT splice; use full factory cable run
- Bond power supply enclosure per local code (NEC 680)
- Confirm GFCI protection on the circuit
Step 4: Add salt
- Calculate salt requirement: target 3,200 ppm (typical) for the pool volume
- Example: 20,000 gallon pool needs ~535 lbs of salt to reach 3,200 ppm from zero
- Existing pool salt content may not be zero - test first; common residual is 200 - 500 ppm
- Pool-grade salt only (sodium chloride 99%+, no anti-caking, no iodine)
- Add salt to deepest part of pool with pump running
- Brush salt into circulation; do not let it pile on plaster (creates etching)
- Allow 24 hours for full dissolution
Step 5: Cell startup
- Confirm flow switch reads water flow
- Power up cell
- Set output percentage to 50% initial; adjust over first week
- Run pump 8 - 12 hours/day initial (more than route customer's prior schedule)
Step 6: Re-balance
- Check chlorine 24 hours post-startup; target 1 - 3 ppm
- Adjust cell percentage up or down to maintain
- Check stabilizer (CYA): salt cells benefit from 60 - 80 ppm CYA (higher than tab-chlorine pools); add if low
- Re-check pH; salt cells run slightly basic + push pH up over time
Step 7: Customer education
- Salt does NOT evaporate; only water does. Don't add salt unless level drops (test confirms).
- The pool will TASTE slightly salty (3,200 ppm vs ocean 35,000 ppm). Customer expects this.
- Cell replacement: 3 - 7 years depending on use + chemistry; budget for it.
- Stabilizer (CYA) management is more important than with tab chlorine - protects from sun degradation.
The single biggest cell-killer is HIGH calcium hardness combined with HIGH pH. Calcium scale on the cell plates blocks chlorine production + the cell reads "low salt" even with proper salt level. Maintain pH 7.2 - 7.6 (lower end) + calcium 200 - 400 ppm. Recommend quarterly cell inspection - pull cell, dip in 4:1 water:muriatic acid for 5 - 10 minutes if visible scale. Customers who skip pH management blame the cell when chemistry is the cause.
