Spa Spillway Trickles Only After Filter Clean Decision Tree

Why this matters

A raised spa with a sheet-style spillway is supposed to flow full and even when the system runs in spa or spillover mode. When it flows full normally but drops to a trickle right after you clean the filter, the timing is the diagnosis: something you did in the cleaning sequence changed a valve position, trapped air, or left the system in a different flow state. The customer sees a broken water feature; the real issue is usually a hydraulic or automation state error introduced at clean time, occasionally a flow loss that only the post-clean restart reveals. Getting this right keeps you from chasing a "spillway problem" that is actually a valve or air-lock you created.

Symptom presentation

Spillway flows correctly during normal operation. After a filter clean and restart, the same spillway barely trickles or runs uneven and thin. Pump may sound like it is moving water fine to the pool returns but starves the spa loop. Sometimes accompanied by air burping at the spa jets or a gurgle at the spillway. On automated systems the actuator valves may be sitting at an in-between position. The effect often clears on its own after a long run, which points away from a permanent blockage.

Quick checks

  • Verify the system mode and valve positions after the clean. Did the actuator or manual diverter end up in pool, spillover, or an in-between state different from before? A diverter bumped during service is the single most common cause.
  • Check the pump strainer pot and filter for trapped air after the clean; an air pocket in the loop starves the spillway line first because it sits highest in the system and needs the most head to fill.
  • Confirm the filter was fully reassembled: lid o-ring seated, air-relief closed after bleeding, clamp band tight. A small post-clean suction leak steals the head that lifts water over the spillway lip even when the pool returns still flow.
  • Look at water level; cleaning splash-out or a drained-down level can drop the skimmer below its weir and pull air into the loop.
  • Note whether a long run restores full flow (air-lock signature) versus a persistent trickle (valve, speed, or restriction). The self-correcting case almost always means air, not a mechanical fault.
  • Confirm the variable-speed pump returned to its spillover-mode speed and was not left at a low post-clean priming speed that cannot lift the feature.

Isolation tree

  1. After the clean, are the diverter / actuator valves in the same positions as before service? If a valve is in the wrong or in-between position, the spillover leg is throttled. Reset to the correct spillover position and re-check. If positions are correct, continue.
  2. Bleed air from the filter and pump. Did opening the air-relief release a long air burp and restore spillway flow over a few minutes? If yes, a post-clean air-lock was starving the high spillway line. If air bleeds clean and flow is still weak, continue.
  3. Inspect the filter reassembly: lid o-ring, air-relief fully closed, clamp band torque, drain plugs. A small suction or air leak introduced at reassembly robs head. Reseal and re-check. If sealed correctly, continue.
  4. Is water level at mid-skimmer with the weir submerged? Low level pulls air through the skimmer and the spillway, the highest demand, starves first. Restore level and re-check. If level is good, continue.
  5. With valves correct, air purged, and seals tight, does the spillway still trickle? Inspect the spillover line and check valve (if fitted) for a partial blockage dislodged during cleaning, and confirm the pump is reaching full RPM/flow. A variable-speed pump left at a low post-clean speed cannot lift the spillway.

Confirming diagnosis

Confirm by reproducing the state, not by hoping. Set the valves to the documented spillover position, fully bleed air, confirm the pump is at the spillover-mode speed, and watch the spillway over several minutes. If full flow returns, the cause was the disturbed state (valve, air, or speed) introduced at clean time. If flow stays weak with everything else verified, isolate the spillover leg: a partial line restriction or a stuck check valve in that branch is the remaining suspect, confirmed by comparing spa-loop flow against pool-return flow. Record the correct valve positions and the spillover-mode RPM in the service notes so the next clean does not reintroduce the same fault; an undocumented valve setup is what makes this a recurring callback.

Remediation

  • Valve / mode error: return manual diverters and actuator valves to the verified spillover positions; on automation, recalibrate actuator end-stops if they overshoot (see the actuator-position article).
  • Air-lock: bleed the filter and pump fully on restart as a standard step in your clean sequence; air-relief closed only after a steady water stream appears.
  • Reassembly leak: replace and lubricate the lid o-ring, seat the clamp band evenly, and close the air-relief; correct any suction-side leak introduced during service.
  • Low water: restore to mid-skimmer and enable/repair autofill so post-clean splash-out does not uncover the weir.
  • Pump speed: confirm the spillover-mode RPM is high enough to lift the feature; raise the programmed spillover speed if the spillway cannot reach full sheet.
  • Branch restriction: clear the dislodged debris or repair the stuck check valve in the spillover line, then re-test the spillway against the pool returns to confirm the leg is no longer starved.
  • Standardize the clean sequence: bleed air fully on every restart, return diverters and the pump to documented spillover settings, and verify the spillway runs a full sheet before leaving. Folding these into the routine turns a recurring callback into a non-event.
