Pool Water Test Kits - Selection and Accuracy Reference

Why this matters

Every pool service chemistry decision is grounded in the test result. An inaccurate test produces an inaccurate dose, and a single wrong dose can cause a sequence of cascading problems - over-shocking from a low chlorine reading that was actually normal, scaling from raising calcium that was actually fine, corrosion from over-acidifying based on a misread pH. The test kit is the most-used diagnostic tool on the truck, and selection matters more than most pool service techs treat it.

What the pool service tech needs

For a residential pool service company, the recommended kit is:

A professional-grade liquid test kit (e.g., Taylor K-2006, Pentair Pro DPD Series, LaMotte ColorQ Pro 7) covers chlorine, combined chlorine, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, and CYA in one package. Investment is modest; pays back across the first season in better accuracy.

What NOT to use for professional service

Test strips alone: too inaccurate for chemistry decisions. Use for customer-side daily checks between professional visits; do NOT base service decisions on strip readings.

OTO-only chlorine: doesn't distinguish free chlorine from combined chlorine. Combined chlorine (chloramine) is what causes "pool smell" and irritation; total-only readings mask the problem.

Old reagents: chemical reagents have shelf lives. Phenol red and DPD reagents typically expire 1-2 years after opening. Test with reference samples periodically to verify accuracy.

Free vs. combined vs. total chlorine

Critical distinction:

  • Free chlorine (FC): the active sanitizing chlorine, the number you want at 1-4 ppm in residential pools
  • Combined chlorine (CC) / chloramine: chlorine that has reacted with organic matter, far less effective at sanitizing, causes pool smell and irritation
  • Total chlorine (TC) = FC + CC

A pool with FC 0.5 ppm and CC 2.5 ppm has total chlorine 3.0 ppm - the strip would read 3 ppm "chlorine," but the pool is actually under-sanitized AND has high chloramine causing irritation. Shock the pool to break the chloramines (free chlorine well above 10x the CC reading).

DPD or FAS-DPD tests differentiate. Strip tests typically don't.

CYA accuracy

The CYA (cyanuric acid / stabilizer) test is the most-misread test:

  1. The standard turbidity test reads "above 100" once CYA exceeds the meter's range
  2. Many residential customers assume "100" means "good" - actually CYA above 70 ppm starts becoming problematic
  3. The relationship between CYA and effective chlorine is the key chemistry concept (see Green Pool Recovery article)

When CYA reads above 100 ppm, the pool needs partial water replacement (CYA can't be lowered chemically).

Calibration and verification

Periodically:

  1. Test with a known reference sample (the manufacturer of your kit sells these)
  2. Compare your reading to the known concentration
  3. If consistently off, replace reagents
  4. Photometers may need calibration adjustment per manufacturer

A reading-off-by-much-more-than-the-tolerance signals replacement.

Field hygiene

Pool chemistry tests are sensitive:

  1. Rinse the test vial with pool water before filling (don't dilute with tap water)
  2. Fill to the exact line indicated
  3. Add exact drop counts (drops are calibrated; partial drops are inaccurate)
  4. Compare colors in good light (daylight, or daylight-balanced LED)
  5. Read promptly - colors continue to develop and fade in some tests
  6. Rinse the vial thoroughly between different tests

Customer-facing kits

For customer education, recommend test strips OR a basic OTO drop test:

  • Cheap and fast
  • Adequate for daily / between-visit checks
  • Tells the customer "is it broadly OK or not"
  • The professional kit fills in the precision

A customer-side daily check + professional weekly test is the right cadence.

Specialty tests

Phosphate test:

  • Phosphates feed algae
  • Useful for chronic algae issues
  • Target <100 ppb (parts per billion)
  • Phosphate remover treatments available

Iron / copper test:

  • Iron / copper in source water can stain pool surfaces
  • Useful when staining is observed
  • If high, source-water filtration may be needed

Bromine test:

  • Bromine pool / spa replaces chlorine
  • DPD test reads bromine (results × 2.25 = bromine ppm if labeled for chlorine)
  • Or use a bromine-specific kit

Documentation

Every visit's test results go into the customer file:

  1. Date and time
  2. All readings
  3. Any chemistry adjustments made (what + how much)
  4. Photos of any concerning conditions

Over time the customer file reveals trends - chlorine demand changing seasonally, calcium drifting, pH cycling. The data drives chemistry strategy.

Service-tier customer education

Customers in the premium service tier get:

  1. Detailed chemistry report after every visit (digital, sent same day)
  2. Trend analysis monthly
  3. Recommendations for any chemistry adjustments outside of routine
