Asphalt Shingle Blister vs Pop vs Fish Mouth Decision Tree

Why this matters

A "bump in the shingle" sounds trivial until you realize that three different defects share the same field appearance and only one is a manufacturer warranty case. Blisters point at attic ventilation or moisture trapped during manufacture. Pops point at solvent or asphalt outgassing from a single bad bundle. Fish mouths point at installation: a lifted leading edge that turns into a wind-tear initiation point in the next storm. Confusing them costs the contractor either a warranty denial they should have won, a callback they should have headed off, or a slow leak that surfaces 6 months later.

Symptom presentation

The homeowner reports raised bumps, broken pimples that leak granules, or shingle tabs that lift at the front edge. From the ground the roof looks rough or pebbly; up close you see one of three patterns. Smooth round domes 0.25 to 0.75 in diameter scattered randomly across the field with intact granule cover are blisters. Smaller bumps that have already burst, leaving a crater with the underlying asphalt visible and a halo of granules pushed outward, are pops. A leading edge of a shingle tab raised off the course below in a curved arc, often with the sealant strip visible but unattached, is a fish mouth. Mixed presentation is common on roofs older than 10 years.

Quick checks before climbing

Capture five data points before the field walk:

  • Roof age, manufacturer, product line, and original install crew (own crew or sub).
  • Attic ventilation: ridge vent length, soffit intake net free area, gable vent count, and bath-fan termination point. Code (IRC R806.1) requires 1 sq ft of net free vent area per 150 sq ft of attic floor (or 1 per 300 with 50/50 balanced ridge-to-soffit split).
  • Last storm date and wind speed. Fish mouths that did not lift before a storm but lift after are a different story than fish mouths visible since install.
  • Whether the failure is bounded by a slope, a course, or a bundle range. Bounded failures point at one bundle (pops) or one crew section (fish mouths). Unbounded failures point at site conditions (blisters from heat plus moisture).
  • Whether the customer ever reports "ticking" sounds on hot afternoons. Blisters expand audibly as the trapped vapor warms; pops do not.

Branch A: blisters

Blisters are vapor bubbles trapped between the granule layer and the asphalt mat, or between the mat and the underlying laminate. The vapor source is almost always one of two things: trapped moisture in the asphalt at the factory (rare, bounded by lot) or sustained attic temperatures above 150 F driving moisture out of the deck and into the shingle backing (common, unbounded, attic-related).

Diagnostic walk: count blisters per 100 sq ft on each slope. Heavy distribution on south and west slopes and lighter on north points at attic heat plus moisture. Equal distribution across all four slopes and bounded by a date code points at manufacture. Verify attic ventilation against the IRC R806 ratio; if intake area is less than 50 percent of total or if intake is blocked by insulation baffles missing, attic temperature on a 90 F day will reach 160 F and blisters will form within 24 months of install.

Blisters with intact granule cover are aesthetic. Blisters that have broken open and exposed asphalt are functional failures that accelerate UV oxidation; they do not leak immediately but reduce service life by 5 to 10 years.

Branch B: pops

Pops are blisters that have already ruptured plus a related failure mode where outgassing of asphalt solvents during the first hot summer leaves small craters in the granule field. Production-related pops are bounded by bundle range and date code: pull a sample, photograph the underside code, and contact the manufacturer technical services line. Most majors will field-evaluate within 30 days and either deny or accept the warranty claim.

Confusingly, pops can also be the second-stage of a heat-and-moisture blister. The diagnostic separator: production pops have a clean asphalt center with a clear granule-loss halo and are concentrated in one bundle range. Heat-driven pops are scattered, the crater often shows mat fiber rather than clean asphalt, and the slope distribution mirrors attic-heat blistering (south and west biased).

Branch C: fish mouths

A fish mouth is a leading-edge lift caused by one of four installation mistakes: shingle not seated tight to the course below during install (cold-weather install with a stiff shingle), sealant strip contaminated by dust or shingle wrapper film, nails driven too high above the strip leaving the tab unrestrained, or hand-sealing skipped on a slope below the manufacturer's required temperature.

Walk the slope at noon on a 70 F day. Lifted tabs that do not relax are fully unbonded and will not seal without re-bedding. Lifted tabs that flatten under direct heat may seal naturally if the air temperature stays above 70 F for 7 consecutive days. Fish mouths in random distribution across all four slopes point at cold-install conditions; fish mouths bounded by one elevation point at one crew section.

Confirming diagnosis

Blisters: matches attic temperature data (use a probe thermometer or IR gun on the deck underside at 2 PM), unbounded by lot, biased toward south and west exposures. Confirm by separating a sample blister with a putty knife; you will find a thin glossy film of cooled vapor on the inner surface.

Pops: matches a bundle date code, bounded distribution, clean asphalt centers with a clear granule halo. Confirm by pulling a sample shingle and submitting to the manufacturer per the product line's warranty procedure. ASTM D3462 governs the asphalt-glass-fiber shingle quality baseline.

Fish mouths: matches a calendar date of install in cold weather (below 40 F) or a crew that worked one elevation on a different day. Confirm with the customer's install records and a thermal photo of the lifted tab area.

Remediation

Blisters: address the root cause, not the symptom. Calculate required net free vent area per IRC R806.1, add soffit intake or ridge vent to balance, and clear any insulation blocking intake. Do not replace shingles unless the blister field has progressed to ruptured pops at greater than 10 percent coverage; at that point you are in a service-life conversation, not a repair.

Pops from defect: file the warranty claim. Most majors prorate material cost only. Document with bundle code, sample, and dated field photos.
