DIY Education vs Encouraging a DIY Mistake: Decision Tree
Why this matters
A customer asks "can I just do that myself next time?" and the honest answer is sometimes yes and sometimes absolutely not, and getting it backwards has real consequences either way. Refuse to teach a genuinely safe, simple task and you look like you are protecting revenue instead of helping, which costs you trust. Teach a task that is actually unsafe or requires licensing, and you may have just set the customer up to hurt themselves or void a warranty, with your name attached to the advice. This tree is how you sort one from the other before you answer.
Start here: does the task involve a real hazard
Before anything else, check whether the task touches a genuine hazard category. If yes to any of the following, do not teach it as a DIY task, full stop: working inside an energized electrical panel or on line-voltage wiring, working on gas lines or gas-fired equipment beyond visual inspection, anything requiring the system to be depressurized or opened under stored energy, work at height beyond a stable step stool, or anything requiring a license or permit in your area. Say so plainly: "That one's not a DIY job, not because I want the work, but because [specific hazard] is a real risk if it's not done right." Then continue to see if there is a safe adjacent task you can teach instead.
If no real hazard is present, continue to the next check.
Step 2: does it require specialized tools, training, or calibration
Some tasks are not hazardous but still are not reasonably DIY-able, because they require a tool the customer will not own, a skill that takes real practice, or a calibration step that is easy to get subtly wrong. If the task needs a specialized tool or meaningful skill (soldering a joint, calibrating a control, diagnosing an intermittent fault), it is not a good DIY candidate even though it is not dangerous. Explain what it does involve honestly, without exaggerating the difficulty to protect the job, that erodes trust the moment a curious customer looks it up online and sees it described as simple.
If it needs only common household tools and no real skill, continue.
Step 3: does getting it wrong cause real damage or void a warranty
Check the downside of a mistake, not just the difficulty of the task. If a mistake would void a manufacturer warranty, damage an expensive component, or create a bigger problem than the one being solved, flag that clearly even if the task itself is simple: "The check itself is easy, but if you take the wrong step after, it can [specific consequence], so let's just cover what to check and what to leave to us." If a mistake is low-cost and reversible (nothing breaks, worst case is it does not work and they call you), it is a genuinely good DIY candidate.
Step 4: teach the safe DIY task properly
Once a task clears all three checks, teach it the same way you would any instruction meant to stick: show the exact steps, use teach-back to confirm they can repeat the sequence, and give a written or video leave-behind if the task has more than two steps. Also teach the stopping point explicitly: "if you get to here and it's still not working, that's your cue to call, don't push past that." A DIY lesson without a clear stop line is how a simple task turns into a customer improvising past their depth.
Step 5: when you decline, offer the real reason and an alternative
Declining to teach a task should never sound like a brush-off. Give the specific hazard or consequence, not a vague "it's complicated" that sounds like gatekeeping. And where possible, offer something they genuinely can do instead: "I can't walk you through the internal part, but I can show you how to spot when it's starting to act up, so you know to call before it gets worse." That keeps the relationship educational instead of transactional.
