Google Business Profile + Local SEO
Why this matters
Google Business Profile (GBP, formerly Google My Business) is the FREE foundation of local search visibility. When customers search "plumber near me" OR "AC repair Phoenix," GBP listings appear in the Map Pack (the 3 results above standard search results). 70%+ of clicks go to the Map Pack. A well-optimized GBP delivers more leads at zero cost than most paid advertising. Most contractors set GBP up once + ignore it; the ones who actively manage it dominate local search.
The GBP fundamentals
GBP is your business's listing in Google Maps + Search. It includes:
- Business name
- Address (or service area for mobile businesses)
- Phone
- Hours of operation
- Categories (primary + secondary)
- Photos
- Reviews (with ratings)
- Posts (mini-blog feature)
- Q&A
- Products + services
- Booking link (if applicable)
Setup is FREE. Verification typically by mail postcard (legacy) OR video verification (modern).
Setup + verification
- Claim at business.google.com OR through Google Search
- Verify via mail postcard, phone, OR video (Google chooses)
- Complete profile:
- Verify category accuracy
- Add detailed services
- Upload 10+ professional photos
- Set accurate hours (including holidays)
- Add booking link if applicable
Verification 7 - 21 days typical.
Service-area business setup
For mobile service contractors (no customer-facing storefront):
- Choose "Service-area business" type
- Hide street address (Google honors this)
- Define service area by zip code, city, OR radius
- Customers see "Serves [City, City, City]" without specific address
This protects home-based contractors + matches the actual service model.
Categories (the most-impactful single field)
GBP allows ONE primary category + multiple secondary categories.
Primary category: choose what 80% of your work is. This drives "near me" searches.
Examples:
- "HVAC Contractor"
- "Plumber"
- "Electrician"
- "House Cleaning Service"
- "Pest Control Service"
- "Roofing Contractor"
- "Locksmith"
- "Tree Service"
Secondary categories: add related work you also do. 3 - 8 secondary categories typical.
Wrong primary category = wrong searches = wasted visibility. Take time choosing.
Photos (the visual hook)
GBP photos appear in search results. Better photos = more clicks.
Photo categories to fill:
- Logo
- Cover photo
- Interior (if storefront) / Vehicle (if mobile)
- Team photos
- Work in progress
- Completed projects
- Before/after pairs
Photo standards:
- Professional photography preferred
- Authentic team photos (real techs, not stock)
- Active job sites
- Lighting + composition matters
- Mobile-friendly aspect ratios
Add 5 - 10 photos per month to keep profile fresh. Google rewards activity.
Reviews (the trust signal)
Google reviews are the #1 conversion driver in local search. More reviews + higher rating = more clicks.
Volume + recency:
- 50+ reviews is the minimum credible threshold
- 100+ shows established business
- Reviews from last 30 days demonstrate active business
- Steady stream (5 - 15/month) better than burst
Rating:
- 4.7 - 4.9 stars is the sweet spot
- 5.0 looks suspicious (fake reviews suspected)
- 4.5 - 4.7 still strong
- Below 4.5: address improvement
Active review collection:
- Text after job completion: "We'd appreciate a quick Google review: [link]"
- Email follow-up if no text response
- QR code on van / invoice
- Tools: Birdeye, Podium, Listen360 automate this
- Manual: tech ASK at job completion
Response to ALL reviews:
- Positive: thank within 24 hours
- Negative: respond professionally + offer to make it right + take offline
- No response = looks disengaged
- Active response = trust signal to future customers
Posts (the mini-blog)
GBP Posts are short updates that appear in your listing. Types:
- News / announcements
- Promotions / specials
- Events
- New service line introduction
Post weekly for active-business signal. Most contractors post 0 - 2 times/year + miss this visibility lever.
Examples:
- "Just completed our 1000th install - thanks Anaheim!"
- "New service: heat pump installation. Schedule a free quote."
Q&A (the customer-asked questions)
Customers can ask questions on your GBP. Anyone can answer (including other customers). YOU should monitor + answer.
Pre-populate the Q&A with common questions:
- "Do you serve [neighborhood]?" → "Yes, we serve all of [list]"
- "Are you licensed + insured?" → "Yes, license [#]. Insurance docs available."
- "Do you offer financing?" → "Yes, multiple options available."
You can post your own Q&A pairs. Many contractors don't realize this.
Services + product listings
Add specific services with descriptions + pricing where applicable:
- "Emergency service - 24/7 - call for rate"
Detailed service lists help in search matching + customer confidence.
Local SEO beyond GBP
Beyond GBP, local SEO includes:
Website with local pages:
- Service-area pages (one per city/neighborhood you serve)
- Service-specific pages (one per major service)
- Location schema markup
- Mobile-friendly + fast-loading
Local citations:
- Yelp, Bing, Apple Maps, Facebook
- BBB, industry directories
- Chamber of Commerce
- Consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across all
Backlinks:
- Local newspaper, blog mentions
- Industry association listings
- Community sponsorships
- Customer testimonials with link-back
On-page SEO:
- Service-specific page content
- Customer-question content (FAQ pages)
- Blog posts (local + service topics)
- Image alt text
Measuring + improving
GBP Insights (analytics):
- How customers found you (direct search vs discovery)
- Search queries (what they searched)
- Actions (calls, direction requests, website clicks)
- Photo views
Review monthly. Patterns indicate where to optimize.
Track KPIs:
- Calls from GBP per month
- Website clicks from GBP
- Direction requests
- Review velocity (new reviews/month)
- Average rating
Cost of NOT optimizing
A contractor with average GBP setup (vs optimized):
- Half the search visibility
- Lower conversion rate
- Lower trust signal
- More expensive paid ads needed to compensate
Estimated cost of poor GBP for a M revenue service business.
The optimization investment pays back 10 - 50x.
The single most-impactful Google Business Profile habit is REVIEW RESPONSE - every review, positive or negative, responded to within 24 hours. Google's algorithm explicitly rewards active engagement; customers see your responsiveness signal as trust. Most contractors respond to none or only the bad ones. Just respond to ALL - a simple "Thank you for the kind words, John! We appreciate your business" takes 30 seconds + measurably moves your local-search ranking + your conversion rate.
Common mistakes
- Inaccurate hours (especially holidays + after-hours)
- Wrong primary category (too generic OR mismatched)
- Sparse photos (under 10)
- No review response
- Set-and-forget approach (no weekly attention)
- Multiple GBP profiles competing (duplicates dilute ranking)
