How to Take Photos That Document the Before and After

Why this matters

A photo is the cheapest insurance a tech carries. It ends the "you broke that" argument before it starts, it proves the work you did inside a wall where nobody will ever see it again, and it shows the customer what they paid for. Photos also feed the office, the next tech, and any warranty claim. The tech who documents well is protected; the one who does not is arguing from memory against a customer's memory, and losing. Good documentation is a habit, run the same way on every job.

Step 1: Shoot before you touch

The before set is the most important and the easiest to skip. Take it as part of the walkthrough, before your hands change anything. Once you start work, the original state is gone and you cannot get it back. If you remember only one rule from this article: a before photo taken thirty seconds too late is worthless.

Step 2: Capture the right befores

Shoot with purpose, not a random snap:

  • Pre-existing damage. Any crack, stain, dent, rust, leak, or sloppy prior repair near where you will work. This is what protects you from owning damage you did not cause.
  • The fault itself. The failed part, the leak, the reading, the condition you were called for.
  • The identifying info. The nameplate, model, serial, and settings, so the office and the parts house have what they need without a second trip.
  • Wide, then close. A wide shot for context (which unit, which room) and a close shot for detail. A close-up with no context photo cannot prove where it was taken.

Step 3: Shoot the work that gets covered up

The most valuable in-progress photos are of the things nobody will ever see again: the connection inside the wall, the joint before it is sealed, the component before the panel goes back on. When a question comes up in a year, this is the only record that the work was done right. Shoot the hidden work with the system made safe, de-energized and verified or depressurized, never reaching into a live hazard to get an angle. No photo is worth putting your hand in an energized panel.

Step 4: Shoot the after

The after set closes the loop:

  • The completed work, matched to the same angle as the before so the two compare cleanly.
  • The proof it works: the reading in range, the test result, the system running.
  • The cleaned-up area, showing you left the space as good as or better than you found it.

Matching before and after angles turns two photos into one story a customer instantly understands.

Step 5: Make the photos actually usable

A blurry, dark photo proves nothing. Spend the extra few seconds:

  • Light it. Use your work light or the flash. A dark photo of a dark corner is useless.
  • Focus and steady. Tap to focus, hold still, take a second shot if the first is soft.
  • Give it scale. Put a common object or your hand near a small detail so size reads.
  • Fill the frame with the subject, but keep enough surroundings to prove location.

Step 6: Label and attach while it is fresh

Photos scattered in a camera roll are not documentation. Attach them to the job record before you leave, or at the truck during close-out, while you still remember which is which. A short note on each ("pre-existing crack, left of unit" or "new joint before seal") makes them findable and meaningful later. A photo nobody can place is nearly as useless as no photo.

A word on privacy

Shoot the work and its context, not the customer's life. Avoid capturing personal documents, valuables, or people in the frame when you do not need them. If a valuable is unavoidably in the shot as context, that is fine; going out of your way to photograph the contents of a home is not. Document the job, respect the house.

The judgment to bank

Before you touch, shoot the befores. As you cover something up, shoot it. When you finish, shoot the afters at the same angles. Attach and label before you drive off. The habit costs a minute a job and saves you the argument you would otherwise lose.
