Range and Oven Diagnosis Reference

Why this matters

Range and oven service calls split sharply between electric (resistance heating, simple) and gas (combustion, with the additional complexity of gas safety). Most failures are one of a small set of common parts. Knowing the diagnostic flow for each fuel type lets you complete most service calls in 45 minutes.

Electric range / oven diagnostics

Common failure modes

Bake or broil element doesn't heat:

  • Visual: a working element glows uniformly red-orange when energized
  • A broken element often shows a visible break or bulge in the coil
  • Resistance test: bake element typically 15-35 Ω; broil element 10-25 Ω
  • Open (OL on meter) = burned out, replace
  • Inexpensive part, 15-30 min labor

Surface element doesn't heat:

  • Coil element: visual break OR resistance test
  • Smooth-top (ceran/glass): can't visually inspect; remove glass top to access; resistance test underneath
  • Switch test: infinite switch (the rotary knob) sends pulses to the element; sometimes the switch fails - bypass with a known-good switch to test

Oven won't heat at all:

  • Both elements (bake and broil) dead → check thermal fuse (one-time use; opens at over-temp; very common failure point); check oven thermostat / control board
  • 240 V at the element when called? Yes → element bad; No → control / switch / fuse issue

Oven heats but temperature is wrong:

  • Oven thermostat drift (mechanical thermostats drift over years)
  • Calibration adjustment usually exists (small screw inside the thermostat shaft, or via control panel for digital models)
  • Verify with an oven thermometer; recalibrate if off by 25+ °F

Touch controls don't respond:

  • Control board failed (common in 8+ year units)
  • Moderate to expensive part
  • Check power supply to the board first; sometimes a tripped breaker

Self-clean cycle doesn't reach temperature:

  • Door lock not engaged (control assumes it for safety)
  • Lock switch failed
  • Element issue

240 V vs 120 V wiring

Range/oven typically 240 V single-phase. The element gets 240 V; the controls run on 120 V from one leg + neutral. When troubleshooting "everything dead":

  • 240 V across both hots = supply is fine
  • 120 V from one hot to neutral = control voltage is fine
  • 0 V from one leg to neutral = one phase lost or open

  • Bake elements (Whirlpool, Frigidaire, GE common models)
  • Broil elements
  • Surface coil elements (4-prong twist-lock)
  • Oven thermostat / sensor
  • Thermal fuse
  • Surface element infinite switch

Gas range / oven diagnostics

Common failure modes

Burner won't light (clicking igniter, no flame):

  • Bad spark electrode (ceramic insulator cracked, electrode tip burned)
  • Wet electrode (cleaning spill) - dry it
  • Failed spark module
  • Low gas pressure (manifold pressure typically 4-7" w.c. natural gas; 11-12" w.c. propane)

Burner won't light (no clicking):

  • No power to spark module
  • Failed switch in the burner valve
  • Ignition module failed
  • Lockout - try unplugging unit for 60 sec, retry

Oven won't ignite (glow-bar igniter):

  • Glow-bar igniter must reach amperage threshold to open the safety valve (typically 3.0-3.6 A for natural gas, 3.2-3.7 A for propane)
  • Igniter resistance increases with use; if it draws less than threshold, safety valve doesn't open
  • Test: ammeter clamp on the igniter wire during ignition trial
  • Visual: igniter glows orange but no gas flow = igniter weak, replace (inexpensive part)

Oven won't ignite (spark-type ignition):

  • Older gas ovens; similar to burner spark diagnostic
  • Spark electrode, module, supply check

Flame yellow or sooty:

  • Air shutter adjustment needed (more primary air)
  • Orifice blocked
  • Gas pressure wrong (high pressure = lazy yellow flame; low pressure = small)
  • Combustion air restricted

Oven runs hot / runs cold:

  • Oven sensor (thermistor) - typically 1,000-1,100 Ω at room temperature; resistance drops as it heats
  • If sensor reads wrong, control board sees wrong temp and over/under-fires
  • Calibration adjustment on most modern ovens (control panel menu)

Gas smell:

  • LEAK - leave the area, shut off gas, check connections with soapy water solution. Tighten or replace fittings.
  • Sometimes the customer smells unburned gas during normal ignition delay (1-3 seconds is normal; longer is a problem)

Common gas parts to stock

  • Glow-bar igniters (Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire models)
  • Spark electrodes
  • Oven sensors (thermistors)
  • Safety gas valve (DSI bi-metallic) - less commonly replaced, moderate cost
  • Burner valves (per brand)

Brand-specific gotchas

Whirlpool / KitchenAid: common thermal fuse failure; check before condemning elements

GE: glass-top burner relays sometimes fail; not all elements work but board reads fine

Samsung: touch panel known to develop "ghost touches" 5-8 years; control board replacement

LG: door hinge wear; door doesn't seal at top of cavity, oven runs hot or cooks unevenly

Frigidaire: oven thermostats commonly drift after 5-7 years

Bosch / Wolf / Subzero: premium; specialty parts; longer service life but expensive when something does fail

Diagnostic procedure

  1. Verify the customer's complaint - bake doesn't heat? Broil but not bake? One specific burner?
  2. Visual inspection of the failed component - broken coil, cracked igniter, oxidized contacts
  3. Voltage and resistance testing of the suspect component
  4. Test control / switch upstream - does the call get to the component?
  5. Replace, test full cycle - bake to 350 °F, hold, cool, verify normal operation

Common diagnostic mistakes

  • Replacing the bake element when the thermal fuse blew. Bake element looks fine because it IS fine; the fuse interrupts power.
  • Skipping the manifold pressure check on a gas burner that "won't light right."
  • Calling a glow-bar igniter "bad" without measuring amperage. Bright glow but low amps = below threshold; safety valve never opens.
  • Cleaning a sensitive surface (smooth-top) with abrasive. Cooktop is damaged; warranty issue.
  • Forgetting to check the door switch / oven lockout on "oven won't heat" complaints.

When to recommend replacement

  • 12+ years old with multiple recent failures → replacement is more economical
  • Control board failed AND replacement board is very expensive → check class-action / manufacturer rebate first
  • Gas leak from valve body (not connection) → repair / replace mandatory for safety
  • Customer wants induction → replacement (not retrofit-able)

The single highest-yield habit for electric range diagnosis is ohm-test the bake AND broil elements separately, regardless of which the customer reports failing. Both share an oven cavity; both share a thermal-fuse / control circuit. A "bake doesn't work" call often turns out to be a blown thermal fuse with both elements still fine - and the bake one was just used more recently. Two 30-second ohm tests rule out elements as the cause and point to the fuse or control.
