Refrigerator Diagnosis Reference
Why this matters
Refrigerator failures interrupt a household every time - spoiled food, customer urgency, expectation of same-day fix. The diagnosis splits roughly in thirds: sealed system (compressor, refrigerant, evaporator), airflow / defrost, and controls. Knowing which third the symptom points to before opening tools narrows a two-hour diagnosis to fifteen minutes.
How a residential fridge works
- Compressor pumps refrigerant (usually R-134a or R-600a isobutane in newer units) through a sealed circuit.
- Condenser (coils on the back or beneath the unit) rejects heat to room air. Condenser fan circulates air.
- Capillary tube or expansion device drops refrigerant pressure.
- Evaporator (coils inside the freezer, behind the back wall) absorbs heat from the cabinet air. Evaporator fan circulates cabinet air across the coil.
- Air dampers and ducts distribute cold air between freezer and fresh-food sections.
- Defrost heater periodically melts frost from the evaporator (every 6-12 hours).
- Defrost drain carries melt water to a pan above the compressor where heat evaporates it.
A failure anywhere in this chain produces a recognizable symptom.
Not cold at all (both fridge and freezer warm)
Most likely causes:
- Compressor not running: listen at the back. Silent → compressor failed (motor or capacitor) OR start relay failed OR thermostat failed.
- Dirty condenser coil: especially on units with under-cabinet condensers. Lint and dust pack the coils, condensing pressure climbs, compressor can't reject heat efficiently. Pull the kickplate, vacuum coils - often a 5-min fix.
- Condenser fan not running: runs only when compressor runs. Stop or hum without spin = failed fan motor or capacitor.
- Refrigerant leak (severe): capillary tube oil residue or oily spots at brazed joints. Sealed-system work is specialized; many techs refer rather than repair.
Compressor diagnosis:
- 120 V at the compressor terminals when called: yes → compressor itself failed (mechanical or winding). Test windings with ohmmeter - typically 5-20 Ω between common-run-start; OL on any = open winding.
- Start relay test: if compressor hums for a few seconds then trips on overload, the start relay may not be kicking the start winding in.
Freezer cold but fridge warm
This is the classic "doesn't cool fridge" complaint. Almost always one of three things:
- Evaporator fan failed: the fan that pushes cold air from freezer to fridge. Without it, fridge gets warm while freezer is fine. Listen at the freezer's back wall - fan should be running when the fridge is calling. Replace fan motor (inexpensive part).
- Defrost system failed (excess frost on evaporator): if defrost heater, timer, or sensor failed, frost builds on the evaporator until airflow is blocked. Symptom develops over weeks. Pull the freezer's back panel; if you see thick frost on the coil, the defrost system has failed. Diagnose heater (continuity 10-50 Ω), defrost thermostat (continuity at room temp), and defrost timer/board.
- Damper not opening: the small motorized flap between freezer and fridge fails closed. Manual override via the temperature control sometimes; replace the damper assembly.
Freezer too warm
- Doors not sealed: customer leaves freezer slightly ajar; warm air infiltration. Test seals with a dollar bill (close door on it; should pull out with resistance, not slide free).
- Stuffed too full - air can't circulate.
- Defrost cycle stuck "on" - the defrost heater is energized continuously, melting any frost AND raising ambient. Defrost timer/board failed.
- Sealed system marginal - refrigerant slightly low; cooling capacity reduced; freezer can't reach setpoint on warm days.
Frost in freezer / icing on the back wall
- Door gasket leaking → warm humid air enters → condenses → freezes. Replace gasket.
- Defrost drain plugged → melt water can't drain, refreezes inside the cabinet. Common in older Whirlpool/Roper bottom-freezer models - pull drain trough, clear with hot water from the inside.
Ice maker problems
Won't make ice:
- Water supply turned off (sometimes by previous tech, sometimes accidentally)
- Frozen fill tube (defrost cycle issue)
- Failed water inlet valve at the back of the fridge
- Failed ice maker module (5-pin connector, ohms test of components)
- Customer has the ice maker arm raised (off position)
Makes ice but slowly or small cubes:
- Low water pressure to the fill valve
- Partially-frozen fill tube
- Saddle valve at supply restricting flow (saddle valves clog with mineral scale - replace with a proper 1/4-turn shutoff)
Leaks at the ice maker:
- Water inlet valve dripping
- Fill cup overflows (too much water per cycle - adjust the fill volume screw on the module)
- Cracked ice maker housing
Water dispenser problems
- No water flow: in-door filter clogged (replace every 6 months), water line frozen inside the door, dispenser switch failed
- Slow flow: filter aged, low household pressure
- Leaks: in-door tubing connection (push-fit fittings sometimes drift), dispenser valve weeping
Inverter / linear compressor failures (LG, Samsung, some Whirlpool)
Newer fridges use inverter compressors that vary speed for efficiency. They've had a well-documented failure rate in some LG and Samsung models (2015-2020 era) - compressor fails 3-7 years in. Class-action lawsuits and extended warranty programs exist for many. Look for:
- Specific model class affected (LG LFXS, LFXC, LSXS; Samsung RF, RS)
- Compressor warranty often extended to 10 years even after expiration
- Specialty repair often required (R-600a refrigerant requires different handling than R-134a)
Brand-specific gotchas
- GE Profile - common evaporator fan motor failure 5-8 years
- Whirlpool / KitchenAid bottom-freezer - defrost drain plug, common 5+ years
- Samsung side-by-side - ice maker frost-over very common
- LG French-door - linear compressor failure pattern
- Subzero / Wolf - long service life but expensive parts; sealed-system specialty
- Bosch / Liebherr - European unit, sometimes harder to source parts
