The Five-Minute Final Check Before You Leave

Why this matters

Most callbacks are not caused by hard problems. They are caused by small things a tech would have caught with five minutes of looking before they packed up: a cap left off, a setting not restored, a connection not retested, a wet spot under a fitting. The final check is the cheapest insurance in the trade. It costs five minutes and it saves the return trip, the lost slot, and the dinged review.

Step 1: Stop and reset your eyes

Before you start packing, stand back from the work and look at it like you just walked in. You have been staring at this for an hour and your brain has stopped seeing it. A deliberate pause resets your eyes so the obvious thing (a panel ajar, a tool left on the unit) jumps out instead of blending in.

Say it out loud if it helps: "I am now checking my own work." Treating it as a real step, not an afterthought, is what makes it happen every time instead of only when you remember.

Step 2: Run the function the customer will run

Operate the thing the way the customer will use it, not the way you tested it mid-repair. Cycle the system through a full normal run:

  • Power it through a complete cycle. Start, run, stop. Watch it do all three, not just power on.
  • Test the actual use case. If it is a thermostat, change the setpoint and confirm the equipment responds. If it is a fixture, run it under real load.
  • Listen and feel. Odd noise, vibration, heat where there should not be heat, a hum that was not there before. Your senses catch failures a single reading misses.

If it does not behave exactly the way the customer expects, you are not done.

Step 3: Check every connection you touched

Go back to each connection, joint, and fastener you opened during the job and confirm it is fully closed:

  • Electrical: terminations tight, wire nuts seated, no copper showing, covers and panels back on and screwed down.
  • Plumbing and gas: joints fully made, then leak-tested under pressure, not just "looks dry." Wipe a fitting and watch it for a true wet check. A leak that starts in an hour is still your callback.
  • Mechanical: fasteners torqued, brackets secure, nothing left finger-tight that you meant to come back to.

Touched it, opened it, loosened it: it gets verified before you leave.

Step 4: Restore everything to "as found or better"

The customer's house should be set the way they had it, plus the repair:

  • Settings restored. Thermostat back to their program, water heater back to their temperature, breakers on, valves open, registers and dampers as they were.
  • Access closed. Panels on, doors shut, crawlspace or attic access sealed, ladder down.
  • Nothing of yours left behind. Walk the work area for tools, caps, cut-offs, packaging, and old parts. A forgotten tool is a guaranteed second trip.

Step 5: Clean the work area

The jobsite is the customer's lasting impression of your quality. They cannot judge your wiring, but they can absolutely judge whether you left their floor cleaner than you found it. See the related clean-jobsite article.

  • Sweep or vacuum debris you created.
  • Wipe fingerprints and smudges off anything you handled.
  • Bag the trash and the old parts and take them with you (unless the customer asked to keep the old part).

Step 6: Confirm with the customer and document

Close the loop so there are no surprises later:

  1. Walk the customer to the work. Show them what you did and that it is running. Let them see it work with their own eyes.
  2. Tell them what to expect. Any break-in noise, any settling, anything they should watch for.
  3. Photograph the finished work. A few photos of the completed job protect you if a question comes up later and feed your job record.
  4. Note anything you deferred. If something needs a follow-up, write it down and tell the customer now, not after they discover it.

The 30-second version when you are slammed

When you genuinely cannot spare five minutes, do these four, every time, no exceptions: cycle the function, leak/connection test what you opened, restore the settings, walk the floor for tools and trash. Those four catch the large majority of callbacks.
