The Job That Needs Two but You Sent One: Decision Tree
Why this matters
You arrive solo and the job clearly wants two sets of hands: a heavy lift, a part you cannot hold and fasten at once, a roof job with no safe one-person path. Push through alone and you risk a dropped unit, a damaged install, a back injury, or a fall. Bail without thinking and you waste a trip and a slot. The right move depends on which kind of two-person problem you are facing. Work the tree from the hard stop to the workaround, in order.
Start here: is this a safety two-person job or a convenience two-person job?
This is the first fork and it governs everything after.
- A safety two-person job is one where doing it alone risks injury or serious damage: lifting beyond safe limits, working at height without proper fall protection and a spotter, energized work that requires a standby person, anything where a slip hurts someone.
- A convenience two-person job is one where a second person makes it faster or easier but solo is genuinely doable without added risk: holding while you fasten, feeding while you pull, a second pair of eyes.
Get this fork right. Convenience problems have workarounds. Safety problems do not.
If it is a safety two-person job: stop
Do not attempt it alone. No schedule pressure is worth an injury or a dropped load. Your branches:
- Can a second tech reach you soon? Call the office. If someone can be there within a reasonable window and the rest of your day survives the wait, hold the job and have them come.
- No one available today? Reschedule the labor for a two-person slot. Explain to the customer plainly: this job is a two-person job for safety, and you are not going to do it unsafely. Customers respect that far more than a hospital trip.
- Can you do the safe portion now and the two-person portion later? Often yes. Diagnose, prep, stage, and do every solo-safe step today so the return visit is short. The trip is not fully wasted.
Never let "I'm already here" override a real safety call. The fall or the injury costs everyone more than the second trip.
If it is a convenience job: can you make it a safe solo job?
Most "needs two" jobs are really "easier with two." Before you call for help, work the solo toolkit:
- Mechanical advantage. Can a lift, dolly, jack, strap, hoist, or set of blocks replace the second person? A tool that holds the weight is often better than a helper anyway.
- Stage and brace. Can you support the part with a stand, clamp, or temporary brace so your hands are free to fasten? Rigging a hold is a core solo skill.
- Re-sequence. Can you reorder the steps so nothing needs to be held and worked at the same moment? Sometimes the two-handed step disappears with a smarter order.
- Split the load. Can you break a heavy assembly into lighter pieces, move them separately, and assemble in place?
If any of these makes the job safe and doable alone, proceed. This is the skill that separates a productive solo tech from one who calls for help on every awkward lift.
If you cannot make it a safe solo job: weigh the trip
Now you have a convenience job that genuinely will not go solo without risk or likely damage. Decide between waiting and rescheduling:
- Is help close and the day flexible? Wait for the second tech; finish today.
- Is help far and the day tight? Do all solo-safe work now, reschedule the two-person step, and leave the site safe and clean. Document exactly what remains so the return is efficient.
Before you ever leave the shop: catch it earlier
The cheapest fix is dispatching two people in the first place. The tells of a two-person job are usually visible at booking: heavy equipment swap, rooftop work, confined access with a long carry, anything the customer describes as large or high. Flag these on the schedule so the right crew goes out once. When you spot a pattern of "sent one, needed two" jobs, feed it back to whoever builds the schedule so the booking notes start catching it.
